When he became emperor following the death of Trajan in 117 AD, questions immediately arose regarding the validity of Hadrian's succesion. Although it is clear from Hadrian's early career and marriage to Sabina (Trajan's grand-niece) that the emperor brought his young kinsman within the imperial court, Trajan, unlike Nerva before, made no move to adopt Hadrian formally, instead possibly preferring others. This fact prompted Hadrian, in the early days of his reign to emphasize his legitimacy to the succession. Hadrian declared Trajan divus and ordered his ashes installed in the Column of his newly complete Forum. Trajan's name and titles were incorporated into the new imperial nomenclature, a privilege reserved solely for legitimate heirs. At the same time, coins were struck to associate the new reign with the previous administration and declare a peaceful transferral of power. The legend DAC PARTHICO (in the dedicatory dative), clearly refers to Trajan, while the Concordia reverse type (to date, uncommon with the addition of Spes), emphasized by the inclusion of CONCORDIA in the exergue, demonstrated Hadrian's potential willingness for the time to continue Trajan's policies, thereby insuring continued political harmony, something which disintegrated as Hadrian's reign progressed.

This is an extremely rare variant with the title P P added to the long obv. legend used in 138 to early 139, before the title Pater Patriae was awarded. The first sestertius with this obv. legend appeared in the Garonne Hoard of 1965 and 1970, published in 1984, no. 3569, pl. LVIII. Additional sestertii were collected by Curtis Clay in 1996 and 2012. This specimen is the fourth known. Until now, all these sestertii have the Fides standing reverse type.

Fake Silver Half Obol
0.62 gm, 7.75 mm
Obv.: Anchor with loop eye and dots below

Topalov Apollonia p. 568, 13; HGC 3, 1325 (obol);

Reasons to believe fake: fabric appears wrong; shape of anchor off, flukes curved wrong; stock/flukes carved on top of shaft instead of behind; one dot instead of four for this size coin; artificial toning; seller had many other fakes listed as well.

Eukratides I came to power in a revolt against the Euthydemid dynasty commencing around 171 BC and continuing for a decade. He extended his dominion to include all of Baktria and its realms both north and south of the Hindu Kush. Around 145 BC, Eukratides was murdered by his one of his own sons, probably Plato. By this time Baktria was weakened by the protracted struggle for power. The demise of Eukratides provided a catalyst for Scythian nomads to cross the Oxus, eventually to overrun Baktria. The city of Ai Khanoum appears to have been amongst the first to fall to invaders. This is evidenced by the fact that no coins later than those of Eukratides have been found in the excavations at Ai Khanoum. Within a decade Baktria had fragmented, overrun by Scythian nomads from the north, with the possible exception of a small Greek enclave in the eastern foothills of the Hindu Kush and the associated valley passes that led to the south and the Kabul Valley. A small remnant Greek civilization remained for another century to the south of the Hindu Kush before being overrun.

Childebert I, Frankish King of Paris, Merovingian DynastyChildebert I (c. 497-558), Merovingian dynasty, Frankish king of Paris (511-558) and Orleans (524-558). Æ (14 mm, 0.81 g). Obverse: EL/DEBER/TIR (first R retrograde) in three lines. Reverse: chi-rho. Prou 36, Belfort 5454.

The coin type may have been minted in Marseille after 536. Witiges, king of the Ostrogoths, ceded Provence to the Franks in 535. The possession of Arles and Marseilles was guaranteed to Childebert by his brothers and the annexation of the province was completed in the winter of 536–537. The type with the king's name and title in three or more lines resembles contemporary Ostrogothic coins.
