Ephesus peaked during the 1st and 2nd century A.D. when it was second in importance and size only to Rome, with a population estimated at 400,000 to 500,000 in 100 A.D. The city was famous for the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, and its theater, seating 25,000 spectators. Ephesus also had several large bath complexes and one of the most advanced aqueduct systems in the ancient world. Water powered numerous mills, one of which has been identified as a sawmill for marble. The city and temple were destroyed by the Goths in 263 A.D., marking the decline of the city's splendor.

The term 'barbarous radiates', dating from its use by antiquarians in the 19th century, is still often used to refer to the locally produced unofficial coins which imitated the official Roman antoninianii of the period. These coins were not struck by barbarians outwith the Empire as the name would suggest, nor were they intrinsically forgeries or fakes. Instead they were the result of a period of great instability within the Roman empire during which the western provinces especially often experienced a severe lack of coinage. To fill this void small denomination coinage was unofficially issued in very large numbers. Though some of these coins are fairly close copies of the official coins which they imitate, many others have been produced by die engravers who were patently illiterate and often of limited ability artistically as well. Around 274 Aurelian banned the use of these imitative bronzes when he reformed the currency but it is possible that some "barbarous radiates" were still being produced after that date. Whether individual coins are of British or Continental mintage can really only be ascertained by provenance.

HUN_Andras_II_Huszar_270.jpg
Hungary. András/Andreas II (1205-1235). Huszár 270, Toth- Kiss 21.85.1.1, Unger 163, Réthy I 300, Frynas 17.42, Lengyel 17/81, Adamovszky 317, Rengjeo 56, Mimica 56, Dimnick-Dobrinić 5.1.12Hungary. András/Andreas II (1205-1235)

AR obulus (average 0.7500 fineness; .3 g., 10.2 mm.); .32 gr., 9.98 mm. max, 180°

Obv: Crowned head facing front with two swords.

Rev: Two standing lions looking back over their shoulders, a star between them.

The coins of András II can be divided into four weight groups, with average weights of the denárs being 0.53, 0.59, 0.86 and 0.79 grams, and the heaviest apparently issued between 1222 and 1230 (per Huszár at 11). If so, based on the average weight of the companion denár (Huszár 269), this emission was issued 1222-1230, although Gyöngyössy dates it to 1215-1222.

Rengjeo, Mimica and Dimnick-Dobrinić refer to this emission as a Croatian Freisacher issued in Slavonia under András II (1205-1235) and Dukes Béla (1220-1226; governor of Dalmatia and Croatia) and Kálmán/Coloman (1226-1235; duke of Dalmatia and Croatia) (Group V). This attribution was initially made by Hóman in 1920, who tentatively assigned this emission to a Zagreb mint. However, the basis of this attribution has been proven to be erroneous, and the consensus among Hungarian numismatists is that the emission is Hungarian (per Metcalf [1979] at 156).

ptolemyVI.jpg
Ptolemy VI Philometor, Herakles/ Eagle, 25 mm, "K"Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, Ptolemy VI Philometor, 180 - 145 B.C. Bronze obol, Svoronos 1376, SNG Cop 270, VF, obverse weak in places, 11.427g, 25.0mm, 315o, c. 180 - 168 B.C.; obverse Bearded head of Herakles right wearing lion's scalp; circle of dots around; reverse “PTOLEMAIOU BASILEWS”, eagle standing half left, head turned back right, long transverse caduceus behind, K below; rare. The bearded Herakles obverse occurs on three different series of Ptolemaic bronzes identified by Svoronos. Our coin type has an average obol weight of 10.93 g. The style and weight connect it to the reign of Ptolemy VI. Similar issues with a transverse scepter have “EUL” between the legs of the eagle, for Eulaios an advisor to young Ptolemy VI. The K may refer to Cleopatra I, senior co-ruler between 180 and 178/7 BC, while Ptolemy VI was a young child. Alternatively, K may stand for either Komanos or Kineas, who took the advisor-roles of Eulaios and Lenaios. Diobols (Svoronos 1375) exhibit a different eagle but the same K between the legs. The relative scarcity of the K-issues suggests that they may be for Komanos or Kineas. ex FORVM
