200/2. Pinaria - as (155 BC)AE As (Rome, 155 BC)
O/ Laureate head of Janus; I above.
R/ Prow right; NAT above; I before; ROMA below.
26.59g; 33mm
Crawford 200/2 (13 specimens in Paris)
* Pinarius Natta:
This moneyer came from the old patrician gens Pinaria (Cicero, De Divinatione, ii. 21). Despite its ancestry, this gens produced very few noteworthy members, although some of them are recorded until the empire.
The cognomen Natta is old; the first known Pinarius to bear it was Lucius Pinarius Natta, Magister Equitum in 363, and Praetor in 349 BC. Then, nobody else of that name is recorded until our moneyer, and his probable brother (RRC 208, 150 BC), who are both completely unknown apart from their coins. Finally, the last Natta of the Republic was a Pontifex in 56, brother-in-law to Clodius Pulcher, the famous Tribune (Cicero, Pro Domo, 118). It seems that the Nattae had lost their political influence early, but retained some religious duties until the end of the Republic, as Cicero says that they learnt "their sacred ceremonies from Hercules himself" (Pro Domo, 134).
The Pinarii indeed claimed to descend from a mythical Pinarius, who had welcomed Hercules with a banquet when he came to Latium (Livy, i. 7). This myth was so deeply stuck in the Roman mythology that it was still used by Caracalla on an unique aureus (leu 93, lot 68).Joss

Marcus AureliusMarcus Aurelius was recognized by the emperor Hadrian as a fine and capable youth and was betrothed to the daughter of Aelius. The emperor Antoninus Pius adopted him and in 145 A.D. he married Antoninus` daughter, Faustina II. In 161 A.D., he succeeded Antoninus as Augustus, immediately proclaiming Lucius Verus his co-emperor. Although known for his adherence to the philosophy of Stoicism and as a naturally peaceful man, Marcus` reign was disturbed by war with Parthia, plague and then a long, hard war along the Danube frontier. He died on March 17th, 180 A.D. and was deified by the senate soon after.

REV: eagle standing left on scepter, wings open, raising wreath in right talon
EX: Forum Ancient Coins, American Rare Coins (Ridge, NY)
This type, traditionally attributed to an otherwise unknown Dacian or Sythian king Koson, was struck by Brutus, c. 44 - 42 B.C.,
with gold supplied by the Senate to fund his legions in the Roman civil war against Mark Antony and Octavian.
The obverse imitates a Roman denarius struck by Brutus in 54 B.C. depicting his ancestor L. Junius Brutus, the traditional founder of the Roman Republic.
The reverse imitates a Roman denarius struck by Pomponius Rufus in 73 B.C. The meaning of the inscription "KOΣΩN" is uncertain.
KOΣΩN may have been the name of a Dacian king who supplied mercenary forces to Brutus, or BR KOΣΩN may have been intended to mean "[of] the Consul Brutus."

Julius Bassianus was born in 188 A.D., the son of the future emperor Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. In 195, his father, emperor since 193, raised him to the rank of Caesar, and changed his name to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, emphasizing a fictional tie between the House of Severus, and that of the Antonines. In 198, he was named Co-Emperor with his father. Caracalla was his nickname, based on the long Gallic cloak which he made fashionable in Rome.
In 208, he went with his family to Britain, where he led the last campaigns himself, due to Severus’ illness. In 209, his brother Geta was also named Co-Emperor. In 211, Severus died, and Caracalla and Geta were left as Co-Emperors. The two brothers hated each other, and despite the efforts of their mother, Julia Domna, Caracalla soon had Geta assassinated.
As sole emperor, Caracalla faced major financial concerns, and the two most memorable acts of his reign were attempts to deal with this financial difficulty. He introduced a new coin denomination, which modern collectors refer to as the Antoninianus. This coin was apparently valued at two denarii, but by weight, it only measured one and a half denarii, allowing a major profit to the treasury. His other act, for which he is best remembered to history was the Constitutio Antoniniana, a sweeping law granting the full Roman citizenship to almost the entire free population of the empire. The reason for this was most likely fiscal, only citizens were subject to the taxes on manumission of slaves, and inheritance taxes.
In 214, Caracalla made preparations for the conquest of Parthia. In 217, after some success, Caracalla was murdered at the instigation of his Praetorian Prefect, Macrinus, who became the next emperor.

Attributed to M. Junius Brutus, struck after the assassination of Caesar for Dacian mercenaries . Obv. inspired by the famous denar Crawford 433/1 of M.J.Brutus 54 BC. Rev. copied from the denar Crawford 398/1 from Q. Pomponius Rufus 73 BC.
But there are other hypotheses too:
1. Struck by Cotiso, king of Dacia for Brutus' Dacian mercenaries. His name appears in the odes of Horace, lib. II, 8.18 and in Sueton, The deified Augustus, LXIII.
2. Struck not earlier than the first half of the 16th century as an inofficial issue in northern Romania.
But now we have new results of spectral-analytical researches which are speaking for ancient gold!Jochen
