Ex auction Leu 10, 1974, 319 (hammer price: 1700 CHF).

While Claudius (47) and Antoninus Pius (147) used the founding date of 753 B.C. As a basis, Philippus Arabs assumed the Capitoline era, which began a year later. The boundary stone (cippus terminalis) is used in Roman iconography to mark the beginning and end.

Notes: Both old catalog provenances were lucky finds ("in the wild," at least). Having scanned all the Buy-Bid Sales for anything I might recognize, I then combed through Berk's less well-known FPLs. The Weaver list isn't online, but I got it in a group lot of FPLs from the 2021 sale of BCD Library Duplicates. It still had the postage & address label to the well-known coin dealer Henry Christensen. (The interesting provenance for the catalog itself makes finding the coin even more exciting! Those are my favorites-of-favorites. I shared it in "Old Auction Catalogue Madness!" reply 298: [LINK].)

Caesarea Maritima
Late 1st Cent. BCE-Middle 1st Cent. CE
Fragment of a "Jerusalem" Type Herodian
oil lamp consisting of a complete nozzle
attached to a remnant of the body. (Adler
type JERU.1). This lamp had a rounded
wheel-made body and a nozzle that was
made separately, joined to the body, and
then smoothed with a blade, giving it a
splayed shape and concave sides. Decoration
is sparse, consisting of small incised circles
on either side of the wick hole, a horizontal
hashed line across the middle, and two more
circles along the base of the nozzle. The
fine-grained clay has a light charcoal grey
appearance from firing in a low oxygen
environment. This piece, though only a
fragment, is interesting in that it clearly
shows the internal connection of the two
parts that would otherwise be very difficult
to observe.

BCC CG28 "Daroma" Oil Lamp FragmentDecorated Oil Lamp Fragment
Caesarea Maritima
1st-2nd Century CE
Fragment of an Early Roman oil lamp
(Adler type D.3) consisting of a complete
nozzle and a remnant of the body. This
sub-type of the mould-made "Daroma" or
"Southern" group of oil lamps, is found in
two areas - along the northern coast of
Israel and in the Samaria Hills. Decoration
on these lamps, in this case an egg and
dart design, typically consists of a limited
number of simple patterns surrounding
a large filler hole and encircled by a rim.
The fabric of this piece is a medium fine
grained, light tan clay, with faint traces
of pale red/orange slip. The inside of the
nozzle shows evidence of the two part mould
seam which was smoothed over externally.

Hollow cast miniature lead vessel in the
shape of an elongated amphora with a
cylindrical or slightly funnel-shaped neck,
an everted rim, and small looped handles,
which are crushed. The almost straight
shoulders, only slightly broader than the
neck, taper in a straight line to a pointed
base. The body is in the unusual form of
an inverted four-sided pyramid. The decoration
consists of horizontal lines creating four registers
with no surviving linear or geometric elements.
The top register, below the shoulder, bears traces
of an inscription, possibly an O followed by an A,
but nothing else is discernible. The two halves are
slightly misaligned, more noticeably along one
seam than the other.

An identical specimen, from the same mold, was found near Caesarea Maritima in 1949, and is listed in the Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae, Vol. II, Ameling, Cotton, Eck, et.al. on page 621. According to the authors, the term “litra”, derived from the Roman word “Libra”, came to indicate local weight standards between the 1st and 2nd centuries CE. Therefore when the Roman standard was intended the word ιταλικη was added to distinguish them. The weight of 153.5, when multiplied by 2, is about 19 grams short of the Roman libra, however the object may have had a handle at the top and the original weight must have been fairly close to the standard. Around the end of the 3rd century CE the local standards were replaced by the Roman system and the descriptive word ιταλικη was no longer required.

BCC_MA482C_MA53_Bronze_Pin_Tumbler_Lock_Key_and_Bolt.jpg
BCC MA48, MA53 Bronze Pin Tumbler Lock, Key and BoltHypothetical pairing (these parts obviously
do not match exactly), showing how they
might have been situated in a Roman chest
lock of the 1st to 6th century CE. After engaging
the pin tumblers, the key would slide the bolt to
the right to unlock the box lid, and back to the left
to secure it. More details to follow. For more
information please see the Numiswiki articles by
D. Jackson, "Roman Chest Locks", and "Jackson Roman Locks" (Roman Gallery of Locks, Keys, and Seals)

BCC MA51 Roman Bronze Pin Tumbler Lock Bolt Jackson Type 1bBronze Pin Tumbler Lock Bolt
Caesarea Maritima
Roman 1st-6th Century CE
Bronze pin tumbler bolt from a Roman chest
lock, with four circular openings in a cross
pattern bordered by two elongated ovals to
the right and left. The head is notched on the
side facing the lock plate, presumably to limit
the entrance of the bolt into the receiver. This
notch position is quite atypical, as the vast
majority are located on the opposite side, facing
away from the lock plate. Jackson notes only
one such example out of the fifty-three notched
bolts in his collection. (see: D. Jackson, Numiswiki,
"Roman Chest Locks",Image #5094). The tail,
which also served as a stop for the key upon
insertion into the lock, has been widened and
thinned by hammering. After engaging the tumbler
pins in the bolt the key would slide to the right to
open the lock, and back to the left to secure it.
