Crawford 390/2, ROMAN REPUBLIC, L. Lucretius Trio, AR DenariusRome, The Republic.
L. Lucretius Trio, 74 BCE.
AR Denarius (3.89g; 20mm).
Rome Mint.

Obverse: Laureate head of Neptune with trident over left shoulder; control-mark V, behind.

Reverse: Winged boy riding bridled dolphin to right; L·LVCRETI TRIO below.

References: Crawford 390/2; Sydenham 784; BMCRR 3247-70; Lucretia 3.

Provenance: Ex Roma Numismatics XII (29 Sep 2016) Lot 530; CNG Triton XVII, Lot 532; Archer M. Huntington (d. 1955) Collection, ANS 1001.1.24776.

L. Lucretius Trio is not known to history. His coins were attributed to 76 BCE by Crawford, but Hersh and Walker down-dated the issue to 74 BCE in their analysis of the Mesagne Hoard (ANS Museum Notes 1984). Michael Harlan proposed an even later date of 72 BCE.

The coin’s design has received various interpretations over the years. Grueber thought it referred to a naval victory by one of the moneyer’s ancestors. The use of Neptune, wearing a victor’s wreath, is clear. Crawford thought the reverse may depict Palaemon, a child sea-god who came to sailors in distress. Palaemon’s mother was Leucothia, whose name bears slight resemblance to Lucretius. Harlan believes the reverse depicts a winged Cupid gleefully playing on a dolphin, and that the coin alludes to naval victories by Lucullus over Mithridates in 73 BCE (remember, Harlan proposed 72 BCE for the issue date). Whichever interpretation is correct, it’s a charming design somewhat reminiscent of 3rd century didrachms of Taras.

The obverse dies bear control-marks, each specific to a single die.

Crawford 408/1, ROMAN REPUBLIC, C. Piso Frugi, AR DenariusRome. The Republic.
Caius Calpurnius Piso Frugi, 61-59 BCE
AR Denarius (3.96g; 18mm).
Rome Mint.

Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo facing right; wheel with four spokes (control mark), behind.

Reverse: Horse with rider carrying palm, galloping right; II or П above; C PISO L F FRVG, below.

References: Crawford 408/1a (O17/R31); Sydenham 850f; Hersh O-17/R-1023; Banti 245/2 (this coin illustrated); Calpurnia 24.

Provenance: Ex Naville Numismatics 39 (29 Apr 2018), Lot 472; DeFalco FPL 80 (1968); Munzen und Medaillen XVII (2-4 Dec 1957), Lot 185; De Falco FPL 31 (Dec 1955), Lot 155.

Caius Piso Frugi, was the son of Lucius Piso Frugi who produced a huge coinage during the Social War in 90 BCE. Caius was son-in-law to Cicero, marrying Cicero’s daughter Tullia in 63 BCE. He was quaestor in 58 BCE, during which time he fought hard for repeal of Cicero’s exile. He died in 57 BCE, just before Cicero returned to Rome. Cicero thought very highly of him.

Crawford dated Caius’ coinage to 67 BCE, the year of his engagement to Tullia. The near mint state condition of Caius’ coins in the Mesagne Hoard caused Hersh and Walker to bring down the date of Caius’ mint magistracy toward the close of the hoard material, circa 61 BCE. In “Roman Republican Moneyers and Their Coins” (2nd ed.), Michael Harlan suggests a slightly later date of 59 BCE, which would be the latest possible date for the series given the hard dates of Caius’ quaestorship in 58 and death in 57.

With his coinage, Caius reissued the coin types of his father which allude to the celebration of the Ludi Apollinares instituted by Frugi's ancestor during the Second Punic War. These games were held at the Circus Maximus in July of each year and lasted 8 or 9 days, consisting of horse racing and performances.

While his father’s 90 BCE coinage was hurriedly and sloppily produced due to wartime exigency (dies were often used to the brink of destruction), Caius’ coinage was considerably well made – struck in high relief and good style. Reverse dies were convex – resulting in characteristic “cupped” reverses – to fully-strike the high relief obverses. Obverses are in two varieties: the first, with Apollo’s hair bound with a fillet or taenia; the second with his hair laureate. Hersh (1976) knew of 204 obverse dies. Laureate dies are considerably fewer than fillet/taenia dies. The reverses are quite varied, depicting the horsemen wearing various caps or capless and carrying whip, torch, palm or nothing. Hersh knew of 232 reverse dies. Obverse and reverse dies bear a series of control marks consisting of symbols, letters, Greek and Roman numbers and fractional signs. The obverse/reverse die links in the series are very random within the estimated three workshops, and are considered evidence for the “die box” method of die management by the mint officials.

Crawford 518/1, ROMAN IMPERATORIAL, Octavian, AR DenariusRome. The Imperators.
Octavian and Lucius Cornelius Balbus, 41 BCE
AR Denarius (3.36 grams; 18mm).
Military mint in Italy.

Obverse: C•CAESAR • III • VIR R•P•C; Bare head of Octavian, facing right.

Reverse: Club; BALBVS above, PRO • PR below

References: Crawford 518/1; HCRI 298; Sydenham 1325a; BMCRR (Gaul) 83-5; Julia 91.

Provenance: Ex Andrew McCabe Collection [CNG Esale 432 (14 Nov 2018) Lot 276]; ex American Numismatic Society Collection 1001.1.12863 [CNG 96 (14 May 2014) Lot 732]; ex Archer M. Huntington (d. 1955) Collection.

This scarce type was produced by Octavian’s legate, Lucius Cornelius Balbus, as propraetor. Balbus was a native of Gades (Cadiz) in Spain where there was a temple to Hercules, to which the Club reverse alludes. Balbus was favored and honored by both Pompey and Caesar. Upon Caesar’s assassination, he allied with Octavian who appointed him praetor urbanus and ultimately, in 40 BCE, he received the consulship (the first foreign-born citizen to do so). He was extremely wealthy and bequeathed 25 denarii to every Roman citizen in his will!

In 1959 it changed its name to Deborah Hospital, and in 1973 it again changed its name to Deborah Heart and Lung Center, under which name it still operates in Brown’s Mills. It conducted a $1 million fund drive in 1929, and was apparently very active in fundraising thereafter.

Notes: Archer M. Huntington (AMH) founded the Hispanic Society of America and was a major benefactor of the American Numismatic Society (and president, 1905-10). HSA & ANS remain (for now) neighbors in Manhattan's Audubon Terrace, commissioned by Huntington in 1907.

The two institutions battled in the courts & press over the fate of AMH's collection (c. 2008-12). The ANS, to whom the collection had been on "permanent loan" for >65 years, vehemently opposed a planned sale by HSA, the legal owner of the 37,895 coins. The courts permitted HSA's highly controversial 2012 sale. By summer 2013, though, anonymous donors had returned ~26,500 of them. Remarkably, ANS re-deaccessioned (!) & consigned several thousand to auction, incl. this coin & two others now in my coll.

Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York City (New York, New York)AE gilded with only residual guilding remaining, 38.4 mm., 0°

Obv: FEDERATION // FOR THE / SUPPORT OF // JEWISH PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETIES // OF NEW / YORK CITY, surrounding "FOR THE POOR WILL NEVER CEASE OUT OF THE LAND" / 1926, surrounding candelabra flanked by 91 IN -- ONE, צדקה‎ ( = tzedakah = charity) rising from base. W. & H. CO. NEWARK, N. J. in tiny letters along rim at 6:00.

Rev: CHARITY / MY SHARE / FOR / 1926 / LUCKY TOCKEN, 1916 -- 1926 on ribbon above.

Beginning at the end of the 19th century the federation model was adopted by Jewish communal leaders around the country as a successful way to bring together affiliated social service agencies, consolidate their administrative functions, reduce duplication in services, raise funds efficiently and better serve the needs of the community. A Committee on Federation was convened by Felix M. Warburg and first met on February 26, 1916 to sort through the various plans that had been proposed for a federation of philanthropic agencies, and to appoint a Special Committee of Seven for this work. The Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York City was formally chartered by the State of New York on January 10, 1917. The foundational year of 1916 indicated on this token presumably alludes to the convening of the Committee on Federation and Special Committee of Seven.

It was then affiliated with 42 institutions. In 1944, when the Federation merged with The Brooklyn Federation of Jewish to form the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, the Federation was affiliated with 91 institutions. The Federation was presumably already affiliated with 91 institutions by 1926, as the obverse bears the slogan, "91 in One."

As a result of increased fund raising after the Yom Kippur War of 1973, in 1974 the Federation and United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York began to combine their fundraising campaigns. They remained separate but conducted a joint campaign, the UJA-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies Joint Campaign, from 1974 through 1986. The two organizations were fully merged as UJA-Federation of New York as of July 1, 1986.

O:Laureate bust of Melkart right
R: Eagle standing left on prow, with palm frond over shoulder; to left, illegible date above club; crude monograms to right, [Phoenician letter] between legs.

The Isfiya hoard uncovered in 1955 consisted of more than 4,000 shekels and half shekels. The coins had a full range of dates through the 50s AD (about the Tyre year 170s). About 15 percent of the coins had crude and unreadable dates. Since the hoard had almost no coins in the 20s to 30s AD (mid Tyre year 140s through the 150s), the finders made a conjecture that that's where these unreadable coins fall. All these coins with unreadable dates had a KP monogram. Mine lacks readable monograms so I cannot be sure about its period of striking. However, this coin is consistent with the coins in this group.

Morocco, Volubilis CapitolTo the south of the basilica stands the capitol, a temple dedicated to the Roman Capitoline triad, Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. It is composed of a single cella reached by thirteen steps. Four other chapels complete the complex, of which one was dedicated to the goddess Venus. The temple was reconstructed in 218 C.E. by Macrinus, as is indicated by an inscription found in 1924. The temple’s porticos were restored in 1955. In 1962, restoration work started again; the stairs were restored (only three steps remained out of the original thirteen), and the walls of the cella as well as the architectural elements (column drums, bases and capitals) were restored.

Amrit.jpg
Syria, The Ma'abed - Temple at Marathos (Amrit)One of the most important excavations at Marathos (Amrit) was the Phoenician temple, commonly referred to the "ma'abed," dedicated to the god Melqart of Tyre and Eshmun. The colonnaded temple, excavated between 1955 and 1957, consists of a large court cut out of rock measuring 47 × 49 metres (154 × 161 ft) and over 3 metres (9.8 ft) deep, surrounded by a covered portico. In the center of the court a well-preserved cube-shaped cella stands. The open-air courtyard was filled with the waters of a local, traditionally sacred spring, a unique feature of this site. The temple—which was dated to the late 4th century BC, a period following the Persian expansion into Syria—shows major Achaemenid influence in its layout and decoration. According to Dutch archaeologist, Peter Akkermans, the temple is the "best-preserved monumental structure from the Phoenician homeland."

HerodArchelausHendin505.jpg
[18H505] Herod Archelaus, Ethnarch 4 B.C. - 6 A.D.Herod Archelaus Prutah, Hendin 505, 17.9mm, 3.37 grams. VF/VF+, Reverse: Helmet; Obverse: Grapes, Heavy FULL weight, 4 B.C.E. - 6 C.E. A nice BOLD coin with a large flan and HEAVY weight. Ex Zuzim Judaea.

JUDEA: Bronze [prutah] of Herod Archelaus, 4 BC-AD 6. The obverse shows a bunch of grapes, with the name of Herod in Greek; the reverse has a helmet with cheek pieces, two crests (probably of horse's hair) on the left and on the right, and a small caduceus below (Banks, Florence Aiken. Coins of Bible Days. New York: Sandford J Durst Numismatics Publications, 1955. 86).

". . . the widow . . . . may have offered grape-and-helmet-adorned [prutah] of Herod Archelaus, the son of Herod the Great whose reign had inspired such fear in Joseph as to cause him to take Mary and the young child Jesus to Galilee instead of to Judea upon their return from Egypt (Banks, Florence Aiken. Coins of Bible Days. New York: Sandford J Durst Numismatics Publications, 1955. 97).

Son of Herod the Great, he inherited the southern part of his father's kingdom – Judaea, Samaria and Idumaea. Jerusalem was his capital. Augustus denied him the title king and gave him the title ethnarch, with a promise to name him king if he governed well. He was so unpopular with his subjects that Augustus deposed him, banished him to Gaul and annexed his territory (Joseph Sermarini).
