Reverse: ONE PENNY. Britannia seated facing right, right hand resting on shield, left hand holding trident, lighthouse in background to left; 1953 in exergue.
SPINK: 4154

Elizabeth II's "young head" portrait was designed by Mary Gillick (1881 - 1965), this is marked by a small "MG" below the bust.
Demand for pennies was low on the accession of Queen Elizabeth II, so the only pennies issued were in the coin sets made in time for the Coronation. These sets were often broken up, so 1953 pennies could occasionally be found in change. The next year (1954) all the other denominations were re-designed with a revised inscription which omitted BRITT.OMN, but no more pennies were struck for circulation until 1961.

For a number of reasons, this coin
was first listed by Hamburger (Atiqot
Vol. 1 1954/56), as possibly coming
from the first year of Hadrian's reign.
Subsequent authors list the coin as Trajan.
Kadman suggests it is likely that these coins
were minted for Trajan's Parthian War of
115-118CE, and that the lion had a specific
military meaning. (Coins of Caesarea

Hamburger suggested a date
of early through late 3rd century CE
and assigned this type to the mint
at Caesarea, based on the high number
of specimens found there. However, a
number of other cities on the coast,
including Ascalon and Tyre, also used
this type in their official and semi-
autonomous coinage up until the early
2nd century. Any references to
recent studies would be appreciated.

This tiny coin may be an imitation or even an
official issue of a Late Roman type known for
Theodosius II and Valentinian III. Per Hamburger:
"In the IVth and Vth centuries Roman bronze
coinage becomes progressively smaller with the
passage of each decade, so that by the time of
Arcadius, Theodosius, Valentinian III etc. the
coins are reduced to 10 mm... Considering the
extremely small size of the regular coins, it is
remarkable that it has been possible to find any
of the still smaller minute coins of this period..."

This is another of the small denomination
coins, generally presumed to be official
issues of the mint at Alexandria, which
are very frequently found at Caesarea
alongside smaller, local imitations of the
same types. These coins are included in
our Minima Collection rather than the Roman

to remain consistent with Hamburger's

This very tiny coin is similar to Hamburger #119
Atiqot English Series, Vol.1, 1954. “Minute Coins
from Caesarea Maritima”. Dr. Hamburger published
six coins with similar motifs. These coins bear either
a male or female head on the obverse, and anywhere
from 2-4 heads or busts, often crudely rendered,
on the reverse. He was unable to assign a date or
a place of minting based on the style of the designs,
and these coins remain a mystery.

Hamburger assigns this type to the mint at Tyre, in imitation of
the well-known autonomous coins of that city from the late 1st
and early 2nd cent. CE. However, other experts suggest Caesarea was
the mint, since they seem to be commonly found there. Of note is the 90 degree
axis seen in the majority of these Tyche/palm tree minimae.

M101: 10mm 0.44gm Axis:210 cf. Ham# 66
M102: 10mm 0.55gm Axis:30 cf . Ham# 70

Hamburger assignes this type to the mint at
Caesarea because of the frequency of finds,
as well as the importance of the galley to the
harbor of Caesarea. He suggests a date of early
through late 3rd century CE based on the
popularity of the bust of Tyche on colonial
coinage from that era.

Minima of CaesareaCaesarea Maritima mint. AE 6 mm, 0.35 g. 2nd Century CE. Obverse: Bust (Hercules?) right. Reverse: Boar or wolf standing right. H. Hamburger "Minute Coins from Caesarea Maritima," (Atiqot vol. 1, 1954), #57. BCC m41.

This is one of the smallest coin types mentioned in Hamburger. Stunning black Caesarea-style patina. Coin much nicer in hand then in picture.

During the second century CE, a small unofficial mint in Caesarea, a city on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in modern-day Israel, was established to mint large quantities of small denominations, perhaps because there was a lack of small denominations in the region. These "minimai" are usually very crude imitations of earlier official issues. H. Hamburger estimated that only 1 in 10 minimai have identifiable designs due the excessive wear that is usually found on these coins.

This type is quite rare with the legend omitting TR P. Only two specimens are cited by RIC, this coin from the Hauck & Aufhauser 17 auction and another in a private collection.
The reverse type of an Altar with Flame is part of the "pulvinaria" series issued by Titus and Domitian as part of the commemorative issue for the opening games of the Colosseum. It is a carry-over reverse from Domitian as Caesar.

Toned and in excellent condition. An exquisite example of early Domitianic coinage.

RPC 1954 (20 spec.).
Acquired from Athena Numismatics, August 2014.

"At Antioch gold and silver currencies were struck" writes Tacitus in his book The Histories concerning the early activity of Vespasian in the Summer and Fall of 69 immediately after the Eastern legions acclaimed him emperor. Large numbers of tetradrachms were struck in 69-70, which would likely have been used for legionary payment. They show up in countless hoards in the region due to the increased military activity surrounding the Jewish Revolt. During this time period Titus led three legions which he used to conduct the siege and destruction of Jerusalem.

This tetradrachm is from group 4, attributed wholly to the Antioch mint by style. Groups 1-3 are thought to have been engraved in Alexandria Egypt due to their 'Alexandrian' style (see my RPC 1945). The Antioch mint engraved dies are much finer in style, this coin being a good example of that better quality. In high relief with a stunning portrait.
