Simon Coupland: Unlike the Christiana religio coins of Charles the Bald, bearing a temple on the reverse, which survive in large numbers and were struck at several mints, these monogram Christiana religio coins in the name of a king Charles are known in small numbers and were probably the product of a single mint. The hoard evidence indicates that they are coins of Charles the Simple, minted in the early tenth century, and suggests that they may well have been minted at Langres. They have namely turned up in just two hoards, Langres 1880, which contained no fewer than seven specimens alongside a GDR denier of Langres itself, and Neufchâteau 2008, discovered less than 60 km from Langres. England, Roman Baths, Bath (1)These celebrated Roman Baths were unknown until, in 1880, sewer workers uncovered the first glimpse of Roman structures under the Georgian Spa. This led to the discovery of the Roman Baths and their treasures.

The walls, columns and parapet that surround the Great Bath today were built in the Victorian period, and the "Roman" statues that gaze down upon the pool from the upper walkway are also Victorian.

This photograph was taken in the 19th century not long after the Baths were discovered and before the Victorian structures we see today were built.

In 1880, Hawaii's monarch, King Kalakaua, authorized a new coinage that more closely followed United States coinage. His associate Klaus Spreckels contracted the United States Mint to produce silver coins for the islands: 700,000 half-dollars, 500,000 each of quarters and silver dollars and 250,000 dimes. The total was $1 million worth of Hawaiian coins. The Hawaiian Dime was a substitute for the 12-1/2 Cent (Hapawalu) denomination specified in the original application to the U.S. government. The Hapawalu would have required specially made blanks, whereas the Dime denomination was already a standard in the American series. Six Proof Dimes were made in September 1883 at the Philadelphia Mint for inclusion in four-piece sets containing the 10c, 25c, 50c, and $1.00 denominations. 250,000 circulation strikes were struck at the San Francisco Mint (without mintmark) from November 17, 1883 through June 1884. An additional 20 Proof Dimes were made at the Philadelphia Mint in 1884, this time for inclusion in five-piece sets containing the aforementioned denominations, plus the 12-1/2c coin. On June 14, 1900 Hawaii became a territory of the United States, and Congress ordered that a majority of the Hawaiian coins be withdrawn and melted.
