octavian~1.jpg
001j. Octavian001j. Octavian
Great-nephew of Julius Caesar, who named him as heir in his will. Octavian used this de facto legitimacy to maneuver for power. In 43 BC he, Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus formed the Second Triumvirate to defeat the assassins of Caesar. The Triumvirate began proscriptions in which over 2,000 (mostly wealthy) Romans were branded as traitors, deprived of their property, and either executed or driven into exile. This served both to eliminate enemies, and to fill the coffers of the three. Following their victory at the Battle of Philippi (42 BC), the Triumvirate divided the Roman Republic among themselves and ruled as de facto dictators. The Triumvirate collapsed, and Octavian and Antony eventually fell into all-out war. Primarily due to the military leadership of Agrippa, Octavian won the war, with the decisive victory at Actium in 31 BC. Although Octavian made displays of personal bravery on several occasions, he demonstrated little aptitude for generalship. Octavian then consolidated his power in Rome. A note on naming: he was born Gaius Octavius; after Julius Caesar's death, Octavian insisted on being called Caesar. It was primarily his opponents who continued to call him Octavian. It is now primarily a matter of convenience to use the name Octavian for him in the pre-Augustus period prior to 27 BC.

Bare head right, wearing beard / Emblems of the augurate and pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, guttus, and lituus. Crawford 538/1; CRI 312; Sydenham 1334; RSC 91; RBW 1826. On 1st April 1850 the auction was announced of equipment from the defunct Soho Mint, created by Matthew Boulton around 1788. At the auction, on 29th April, Ralph Heaton II bought Boulton's four steam-powered screw presses and six planchet presses for making blanks from strip metal. These were installed at Heaton's Bath Street works, and his Birmingham Mint began to strike trade tokens for use in Australia. In 1851 copper planchets were made for the Royal Mint to make into pennies, halfpennies, farthings, half-farthings and quarter-farthings.
In 1853 the Royal Mint was overwhelmed with producing silver and gold coins and so Ralph Heaton and Sons won their first contract to strike finished coins for Britain, these coins had no mintmark to identify them as from Birmingham.
In 1860 the firm bought a 1-acre plot on Icknield Street and constructed a three storey red brick factory. Completed in 1862 and employing 300 staff, it was at this time the largest private mint in the world.
From 1874 the Birmingham Mint began striking bronze pennies, halfpennies and farthings for the Royal Mint. This time though, the Birmingham Mint issues are distinguished by an H (for Heaton) mintmark below the date on the reverse. Victorian British coins bearing the H mintmark were produced in 1874, 1875, 1876, 1881 and 1882.

This Coin has been personally inspected and authenticated by Dr. David R. Sear as an exceptional fine example of this early struck issue.

**Numismatic Note by Mr. Andrew McCabe :

Dear Sam,

This exceptional looking semis is an anonymous version of the Crawford 50 anchor series, published by me in The Anonymous Struck Bronze Coinage of the Roman Republic: a Provisional Arrangement, in Essays Russo, 2013 (Witschonke, van Alfen eds). It's in my group D, whose description says

McCabe group D1, Related to RRC 50 anchor. Broad squared Janus, tall thick prowstem, prominent keel and rostrum. Average 40 gram As. Asses have a broad square Janus head. Reverses have tall thick prowstems which are either line bounded or solid fill. There are often curved keel lines with downward pointing rostrums. The deck structures are small and flat-topped. Flans are thick and dumpy. There are often off-strikes, flat-strikes or flan defects.

I show below pictures of two styles of As and Semis from this series. The two styles probably relate to two different die engravers. Your coin corresponds to the second of the semisses shown below. I admit I considered buying it myself but wondered whether the field surfaces were smoothed, and then you bought it. Now I see the coin again I think there's no problem with it, it's likely been professionally cleaned and patinated. It is a very high quality coin for a Roman Republican bronze.

Below my Group D photo, I show a standard Crawford 50/3 anchor as, with the symbol. You should hopefully see that the anonymous and the coin with anchor symbol look essentially similar as regards style, design details and flans.

Andrew

Numismatic Note: The rapid slide in the weight standard of the Roman Republican bronze coinage, occasioned by Rome's military
catastrophes at the hands of the Carthaginian Hannibal in the early stages of the Second Punic War, was finally halted by the enactment of the sweeping currency reform of circa 211 BC. For the first time asses were issued as struck coins in place of the cast Aes Grave pieces, thus completing the process which had begun about six years before with the introduction of struck fractional denominations. Following the reform, struck bronzes were produced in a range of values (principally as, semis, triens, quadrans, sextans, and uncia) on the sextantal weight standard based on an as of about 44 grams. The initial issues were anonymous but as the series progressed, various control-marks (symbols, letters and monograms) began to appear, usually on the reverse, indicating the moneyer responsible for the coin's production. This exceptionally fine example of the semis, or half as, is anonymous and belongs to the initial phase of production following the reform of circa 211 BC. Crawford dates it to the half decade 211-206 BC.
The obverse type of Saturn, father of Jupiter, became standard on the semis denomination about 225 BC and at the same time the reverse type for all bronze denominations was standardized as the prow of a galley, the principal instrument of Rome's success against Carthage in the First Punic War.

RPC 1825 var. (larger denomination).
Acquired from Forvm ancient Coins, June 2021.

A smattering of bronzes were struck under the name of the Koinon of Cyprus during Vespasian's reign dated regnal year 8 in either 75 or 76. All are fairly rare today. Just like the Cypriot tetradrachms, two reverse designs were employed: a standing Zeus and the Temple of Aphrodite at Paphos. This Æ29 temple reverse struck for Domitian Caesar is apparently unique. RPC 1825 list one specimen in Berlin, but it is an Æ33 weighing 24.31g, twice the weight of the above piece. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/1825 RPC 1826 has the same temple reverse description as 1825, which clearly is a mistake - it should to be the smaller bronze standing Zeus type pictured in the plates. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/1826

Either way, I cannot find another example of the temple reverse in the smaller denomination. So, for now I'll catalogue it as RPC 1825 var.

victoria_Brescia.jpg
Victoria BresciaStatue of Victoria Brescia (Italian: Vittoria alata = winged Victory), found behind the Capitoline Temple of Brescia in 1826, now in the Santa Giulia Museum in Brescia.

Roman copy of a statue of Aphrodite of the 3rd century BC from a Greek City State. Wings added in 1st century BC to transform her in a winged Victory holding a shield to write on it (name of Victor?). The original Aphrodite (type of the Venus of Capua) was holding the shield of Ares to look at her face reflected on the inside of the shield.

The type of the Victoria of Brescia can be found on many Roman coins and on Trajan's column.
