> In 1756, a French warship had captured two Algerian pirate ships off the Mediterranean coast. At the time, Algerian pirate ships were a constant threat to the French coastal settlements on the Mediterranean. On their shore excursions, they supplied themselves with goods for the domestic slave markets.

It is perhaps interesting that such depictions were used in a certain way arbitrarily on different occasions. For example, there is a very similar token which, with the same reverse with the fighting predators in the obverse, does not show the king but the French admiral La Galissonière. Although the occasion for the issue was also a sea battle, this time it was against the English and about the conquest of the fortress Bugny on Menorca (Klaupo, numismatik-cafe.at). In the description, these two coins are often confused. The descriptions of the French mints are correct.

France. Monneron Confidence TokenAE/copper token; valued at 2 Sols; designed by Augustin Dupré and minted in 1791 (the first pieces leaving the mint on November 3, 1791) on the Watt steam presses of Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint, Birminghan, England, for Frères Monneron; 18.28 gr. Edge: ⁕ BON POUR BORD MARSEI ⁕. LYON ROUEN ⁕ NANT ET STRASB (= Good for Bordeaux, Marseilles, Lyon, Rouen, Nantes and Strasbourg).

Although the Bastille was stormed in 1789, the coinage of Louis XVI continued to be struck until 1792, with a new constitutional coinage in copper or bell-metal, silver and gold commencing in 1791. Thar coinage circulated alongside the ancien régime pieces, but did little to alleviate the shortage of specie. A short-term solution was attempted by the introduction of the assignats, which were paper money backed by confiscated church properties and land. Produced in vast quantities, the assignats eventually depreciated to the point of worthlessness. The tokens of Frères Monneron were issued in response to this situation.

The Monneron brothers, Jean-Louis (1742-1805), Pierre-Antoine (1747-1811), and Joseph-François-Augustin (1756-1824), were the sons of a Huguenot lawyer from Annonay, who made his fortune by buying the rights to receive the gabelle (salt tax) for the town of Annonay. By 1791, Joseph-François-Augustin obtained the right to strike copper token coinage. Production began in late 1791. However, in March 1792, Frères Monneron went bankrupt and Pierre-Antoine fled. His Francois-Augustin resumed the business, but a law of enacted on May 3, 1792 prohibited the manufacture of private coins. These currencies of necessity circulated only until the end of 1793.

The tokens were designed by the greatest engraver of the revolutionary era, Augustin Dupré (1748-1833), who had made his name as a medalist, producing many medals commemorating the American Revolution before becoming the Engraver General of the French mints in 1791.

Assam,_Rajesvara_Simha,_Gold_Mohur,_11_39g,_Saka_1678,_AD_1756.jpg
INDIA, Assam-MohurAssam, Rajesvara Simha, Gold Mohur, 11.39g, Saka Year 1678, AD 1756

The inscription on the Mohur is in Sanskrit written in the Bengali script, as below:

Obv: Within dotted border "Sri Sri Swargdeo Sri Rajeshwara Simha Nripsya Sake 1678" (God of Heaven, King Rajesvara Simha, Saka Year 1678), a small lion facing left featured below.

Rev: Within dotted border "Sri Sri Har Gouri Charna Kamala Makarand Madhukarysa" (A bee on the nectar of the lotus on the feet of Goddess Gouri or Gauri i.e. Goddess Parvati).

Popular legend has it that the Ahom Kingdom was eight sided hence the rulers of Assam minted their coins in Octagonal shape. The rulers had both an Ahom name (Surem Phaa) as well as a Hindu name (Rajesvara Simha) and dated their coins in SE (Saka Era). The coins of Assam bore legends in Ahom, Bengali, Devanagari and Persian.

Most unusual coin with its unique shape unlike any other coins minted during that period in India. It also represents indigenous skill and craftmanship as well as an independent streak devoid of the Muslim (Sultanate, Mughal) and British influence.

AE/copper penny; Issued by James Murray, second Duke of Atholl (1736-1764), and struck at an unidentified mint in England. 11.13 g., 29.37 mm.max.

Obv: Entwined monogram AD (Atholl Dux) surmounted by a ducal coronet, 1758 below

Rev: QUOCUNQUE • IECERIS • STABIT, triskeles in center

Upon the death of James, tenth Earl of Derby in 1736, sovereignty of the Isle of Man passed into the hands of James Murray, second Duke of Atholl, who was the maternal grandson of James Stanley, seventh Earl of Derby (executed in 1651 as a Royalist during the English Civil War). This coinage, comprised of £250 in pennies (60,000 coins) and £150 pounds in half pennies (36.000 coins), was issued to address a currency shortage on the island. Due to the softness of the copper used, the coins tended to wear rapidly. His daughter, Charlotte Murray, Duchess of Atholl, and her husband, John Murray, third Duke of Atholl, sold their manorial rights in the Isle of Man to the Crown in 1765, but the coinage remained legal tender until 1786.

The Colossus of Barletta is a large bronze statue of a Roman Emperor, nearly three times life size currently located in the coastal town of Barletta, Italy. The legs and hands were replaced in the 15th Century, but the 5-metre-high statue is still a powerful reminder of the later days of the Roman Empire.
There are many different versions of the story of this statue, the most popular being that the statue washed up on the shore after a Venetian ship sank returning from the sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, but if that was indeed the case it is not impossible that the statue had been sent to Constantinople much earlier. The identity of the Emperor is uncertain, the most likely subjects appear to be Valentinian I (A.D.364–375), Honorius (A.D.393–423), Theodosius II (A.D.408–450), Marcian (A.D.450–457), Leo I (A.D.457–474) and Justinian I (A.D.527–565). The facial features on my coin seem to me to closely resemble those on the statue, so Valentinian I would be my own personal choice as to the identity of the emperor.
