Domitian Sebaste, Samaria Countermark LXFDomitian Ae 25mm, 14.02 g. Sebaste, Samaria. O: Laureate head of Domitian IMP DOMITIANVS CAESAR; Countermark: LXF, of the Tenth Legion Fretensis in rectangular punch. R: Tyche standing to left resting foot on rock(?) holding spear and globe, [CEBAC]THNWN (of the people of Sebaste); in l. field, date: LΘΡ (year 109 = 81/2 AD). Host coin - RPC II 2226, with LXF - Hendin 1613a.
The Tenth Legion probably acquired its name, Fretensis, from the Fretum Siculum, the straits where the legion fought successfully against Sextus Pompey.
It is undoubtedly most famous for its part in the destruction of Jerusalem under General Titus. Starting in 66 CE, Roman armies began fighting their way from the northern parts of Israel, down to Jerusalem.
Titus advanced on Jerusalem near Passover 70 C.E., trapping the residents and pilgrims inside the city. His forces stripped the Judean countryside of trees to build a 4.5-mile-long wall of pointed stakes around the capital.
In that year X Fretensis, in conjunction with V Macedonica, XII Fulminata, and XV Apollinaris, began the five month siege of Jerusalem that would result in what Jewish Bible scholar Alfred Edersheim described as a, “tribulation to Israel unparalleled in the terrible past of its history, and unequalled even in its bloody future.”
What was the Tenth Legion doing in Sebaste, Samaria? According to some scholars it was perhaps to defend against the appearance of a pseudo-Nero, who had garnered the support of the Parthians.

Republic of Ragusa (now, Dubrovnik, Croatia)Viščević 5.700; Rešetar 1425; Mimica –
AR dinar (= grosso or groš). Viščević Group III Type 50 Variety 4, struck 1594-1613 (updating Rešetar [Rešetar Type 46]). Type struck with approximate weight of .64 g. (.52 g. to .78 g. range) with a fineness of .916 AR and an approximate size of 18 mm.; .56 g., 17.13 mm. max., 180°
Obv.: S BLASIVS – RAGVSI – I (cross-bars in letters A), nimbate (milled aureole) St. Blasé, raising right hand in benediction and holding bishop's crozier (knotted crozier with knotted crook) and city gates with three towers on chest, R in left field.
Rev.: Nimbate (smooth aureole with smooth rays) bust of Jesus, raising right hand in benediction and holding gospel book (without dots) in left hand, head of St. Blasé on chest, IE - XE (= Jesus Christ) across field.
The dinar was minted following the edict issued by the Great Council in 1337 and continued until 1621. The weight standard (1 dinar = 30 folari) was based on the Venetian standard, and the depiction of Jesus on the obverse is borrowed from the Venetian golden ducat. The depiction of St. Blase on the reverse is patterned on the portrayal by Ancona of its patron saint on its coins. The designation of obverse and reverse is per Dimnik & Dobrinić, who note that most references designate the sides in opposite manner.Stkp

Coin blanks for these types were not needed, since it was possible to strike heated silver wire with dies and subsequently cutting out the sheeted coins. Although often crudely struck, these coins were some of the most efficiently made of their time, an innovation that began largely at the Moscow mint During Ivan's rule.
After Ivan "the terrible" died, Civil War broke out across Russia in order to fill the power-vacuum Ivan's death left open.
Mikhail Fedorovich was elected Czar by the Russian council in 1613, in an attempt to reorganize government and stabilize social upheavals. Although expected to fail by many, Fedorovich developed a firm rule across Russia, avoided European conflicts, and established the Romanov dynasty, which lasted 300 years until the Russian revolution of 1917.
