Provenance: Ex Classical Numismatic Group Esale 463 (11 March 2020) Lot 316; Jonathan Kern Collection [Heritage 3035 (2014) Lot 29180]; UBS 78 (9 Sep 2008), Lot 1151; Münzen und Medaillen Auction XVII (2-4 December 1957), Lot 321.

Brutus’ birth name was Marcus Junius Brutus, but he was later adopted by his uncle, Q. Servilus Caepio, and he took the name of Q. Caepio Brutus. Thus, we see many versions of his name on his coins. This quinarius was produced by L. Sestius, proquaestor to Brutus who later gained Augustus’ trust.

Depictions of liberty and victory were common on the coinage of the tyrannicides, who projected the image of liberators. Contrary to this image, much of the silver used to produce their coinage was acquired by extorting the cities of the East.

I love this issue for several reasons. First, this little coin represents the only depiction of a rhinoceros in all of Roman numismatics. This fact just intrigues me, it seems so odd that it is such a unique one off appearance. I enjoy the fact that the depiction shows two horns, confirming that it is an African Rhinoceros. This coin led me on a little journey in trying to understand why this animal was depicted, why only once, and why at that particular time. It turns out that this coin was struck to depict a specific rhinoceros, displayed in fights in the Colosseum for the first time.

Martial describes the games in which this took place in his Liber De Spectaculis. The great T.V. Buttrey wrote a fantastic article on this in which he shows that this little coin points to a different date for these games. I dare you to read this article and not want to get one of these coins!

Domitian, the Rhinoceros, and the Date of Martial's Liber' De Spectaculis by T.V. Buttrey

Rev: Hebrew letter פ/peh-feh between two animals prancing with their backs to each other, looking back

The Hebrew letter פ/peh-feh is probably the mark of Fredman, per Rádóczy and Nagy. Fredman was active during the reign of István/Stephen V, and ennobled by László/Ladislau IV (1272-1290); a source document from that year states: “Fredmanus iudeus comes camere nostre” (= “The Jewish Fredman count of our chamber [treasury]”). He was still active in 1291, during the reign of András/Andrew III (1290-1301). Due to pressure from the Papacy, Fredman did not place Hebrew marks on coins during the reigns of László and András.

Toth-Kiss list 18 denarii (exclusive of varieties) issued by István and Lengyel lists 14. Given that he ruled for only 27 months (May 3, 1270 to August 6, 1272) the number of emisions cannot be explained by the annual renewal and replacement of the coinage. However, István assumed the governance of the eastern part of the country as duke in 1257, in 1258 became the ruler of South-Styria, and in 1262 forced his father to enlarge his territory and adapted the title Younger King. According to Hóman (1916 p. 217) István had the right, as duke, to issue coins. It is likely that most of the coins issued by him date to before he assumed the kingship in 1270.

Huszár rarity R2, Toth-Kiss rarity 200, Unger value 160 DM, Frynas rarity R. The legend on this coin is as per Huszár, Toth-Kiss, Lengyel and Frynas. The legend is REX • STEPNS per Unger and Réthy, and REX STEPANVS per Adamovsky.

Ming DynastyTai Zu Emperor

1368 - 1398 CE

Obverse: Hong Wu Tong Bao

Reverse: Plain

Tai Zu is the founder of the Ming dynasty

Kublai Khan had conquered China and established the Yuan Dynasty in 1279. Kublai Khan died in 1291. He had no able successors, and the weakness and tyranny of the next five Yuan emperors roused the people to revolt. One of these factions was led by Zhu Yuanzhang, the son of a peasant family. He had risen through the ranks after joining as a common soldier, by distinguishing himself in battle, and succeeded to command the rebel troops on the death of his predecessor. He declared himself emperor Ming Taizu (T`ai Tsu) in 1368, and set about conquering the rest of China. By 1387 the conquest of China was complete.

This is the famous Herakles Farnese of Lysipp. The depiction of the rock is strange. Pick writes: "According to Sestini's description the club rests on four apples. This could be true for the ex. from St.Petersburg too." But on this specimen it is obviously neither a rock nor four apples!

AR bracteate heller, ca. 1430; .13 gr., 13.59 mm. max.

Obv. Boar's head with long tusks facing right, within circular border.

Schweidnitz became a town in 1250, and was then part of the Duchy of Breslau (now Wrocław). From 1291-1392 it was the capital of the Duchy of Schweidnitz under Polish Piast dukes. It was then incorporated into the Kingdom of Bohemia, where it remained until 1526, when Silesia came under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy. It was annexed by Prussia during the First Silesian War (1740-42), eventually becoming part of Germany. After World War II most of Silesia became part of Poland, and the city was officially renamed Świdnica.
