Note.
An unusual coin that was overstruck on another coin with a different reverse type. Parts of the undertype is clearly visible on the reverse; the beginning of the legend PM, the last letter of the legend I, the lower part of the border of dots. Also, the feet of Pietas and the lower SC are from the undertype. Interestingly, the obverse shows no traces of over striking.
During various periods in Rome's history, the mint employed a system where two reverse dies of different types were used with one obverse die, the Celators switching back and forth between reverses with each successive strike. In this case though, no coins are recorded with this obverse die that have reverse legends that begin PM, nor do any earlier issues of Hadrian. An interesting coin.okidoki

Acquired from Zuzim, October 2018.
The amount of propaganda the Flavian regime was able to squeeze out of the Jewish War is astounding. Here we have an As struck seven or eight years after the fall of Jerusalem still touting the Jewish defeat. It was the singular event that more than anything else gave the dynasty its prestige. It would have been unseemly to celebrate the defeat of fellow Romans after the end of the Civil War, but quite appropriate to do so over an eastern people, despite the fact they were within the boundaries of the Roman empire. This As was struck in a fairly large issue from the Lyon mint, presumably to address a shortage of bronze coinage in the western provinces late in Vespasian's reign.

In 545 BC the Persian King Cyrus the Great conquered the Ionian colony of Phocaea in Asia Minor. The survivors fled by sea, and after a settlement on Corsica was destroyed by the Carthaginians the Phocaean refugees finally reached the south-west coast of Lucania between 538 and 535 BC, where they founded Velia on a promontory between two rivers.
Its’ natural harbor and fortunate situation on the road between Rome and Rhegion made Velia a prime center of commerce, and it soon became known throughout the Mediterranean as a profitable destination and a safe shelter from the harsh winds of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This allowed the colony to thrive, and by the middle of the 5th century BC the Eleatic school of philosophy took form here under Xenophanes and Parmenides, the latter also writing the city's constitution.
