Rev. Youthful oikist riding dolphin right, holding cornucopiae on his right hand and trident below his left arm; to left, monogram ΙΩΠ.
HN Italy 1043. Vlasto 926 (same dies). Extremely rare, Vlasto knew a single example. Some areas of weaknes and a few light marks and scratches, otherwise, very fine.
From an American collection, ex Rauch 110, 2 July 2020, 21.
This extremely rare variety, known to Vlasto from a single obverse die (925-926) and a single reverse die (926), is among the rarest Tarentine nomoi of the late period and, as the author points out, the dies are of remarkably 'charming style', especially for the period.Leo

Abt. EF, slight doubling on the reverse, good style portrait, substantial remaining silvering and reflective surfaces. London folles are rarely seen with so much silvering. Constantius was responsible for retaking Britain from Allectus. Cloke & Toone comment that the portraits of Constantius are much more likely to be of better, more refined style than those of the other tetrarchs.

Gaius Caligula COS IIII DenariusGaius (Caligula). AD 37-41. AR Denarius, 3.67 g. Rome mint. Struck January AD 41.
O: C CAESAR • AVG • PON • M • TR • POT IIII COS • IIII, laureate head right
R: S • P• Q • R •/P P/OB • C • S • in three lines within oak wreath.
- RIC I -; RIC I (1st ed.) 7 = BMCRE 32 = RSC 23a.
Extremely rare, final issue denarius of Caligula's fourth consulship, which only lasted from 1 January 41 until his assassination on 24 January. The fourth known.
Although the first of these three rare coins, the British Museum piece, was cataloged in the first edition of RIC I, it was left out of the revised edition. In that edition, Giard notes (p. 110, note *) that the BM piece was a misreading of TR POT III COS III. In fact, the first edition was correct, the piece was not misdescribed. The second known example of this type was sold as lot 56 in the Bourgey sale of 17 December 1913. Ironically, Bourgey misdescribed that coin as TR POT III COS III. A third example sold through CNG, printed auction 78 lot 1723.
"On the ninth day before the Kalends of February at about the seventh hour he hesitated whether or not to get up for luncheon, since his stomach was still disordered from excess of food on the day before, but at length he came out at the persuasion of his friends. In the covered passage through which he had to pass, some boys of good birth, who had been summoned from Asia to appear on the stage, were rehearsing their parts, and he stopped to watch and to encourage them; and had not the leader of the troop complained that he had a chill, he would have returned and had the performance given at once. From this point there are two versions of the story: some say that as he was talking with the boys, Chaerea came up behind, and gave him a deep cut in the neck, having first cried, "Take that," and that then the tribune Cornelius Sabinus, who was the other conspirator and faced Gaius, stabbed him in the breast. Others say that Sabinus, after getting rid of the crowd through centurions who were in the plot, asked for the watchword, as soldiers do, and that when Gaius gave him "Jupiter," he cried "So be it," and as Gaius looked around, he split his jawbone with a blow of his sword. As he lay upon the ground and with writhing limbs called out that he still lived, the others dispatched him with thirty wounds; for the general signal was "Strike again." Some even thrust their swords through his privates. At the beginning of the disturbance his bearers ran to his aid with their poles, and presently the Germans of his body-guard, and they slew several of his assassins, as well as some inoffensive senators. (Suetonius - Life of Caligula 58).Nemonater

Tetrastyle tripartite temple of Astarte. In the middle triptych under an arched roof Astarte stg. facing, holding standard in r. hand and l. foot set on prow, being crowned by Nike r. beside her stg. on cippus; beneath rivergod swimming r.; outside staircases leading to the side-wings; in the l. wing goddess with kalathos stg. facing between two animals, in the r. wing female figure stg. facing.
BMC 110, 9; Lindgren II, 1321, 2288
Rare, F/about VF, the sandpatina suggests an illumination from behind and thus the fascinating impression of a three-dimensional depiction!
The ancient name of Caesarea was Arka. Probably under Elagabal the City was raised to a Roman colonia under the name Colonia Caesarea Libani. Here Severus Alexander was born, cousin, adoptive son and successor of Elagabal. We know of an important Astarte cult in Caesarea. Wether the interesting triptych form of the temple was real we dont know. The two figures in the side wings can't be identified clearly; the goddess at the l. side matches iconographically the 'Mistress of Animals', Potnia theron, the r. figure possibly Aphrodite. ITVR in ex. points to the Ituraei, a nomad people in this region.
The ancient name of the river is unknown. Today his name is Nahr-el-Arqa.

The games marked the transition from one era (saeculum) to another and were supposedly held once every 110 years, or the maximum span of a human lifetime, making them a 'once in a lifetime' event. Domitian conducted his games on the Augustan calculation, rejecting the formula for the Claudian games held in 47 AD. The festival was important enough to interrupt the normal striking of reverse types on the coinage and for the mint to produce a new unique issue commemorating the event both in precious metal and bronze. The precious metal designs tended to be symbolic while the bronze were more narrative in nature, focusing on the various religious sacrifices that were at the heart of the games.
This coin's reverse depicts the acceptance of wheat, beans, and oats (poured on ground) from a group of citizens by Domitian in front of a tetrastyle temple. According to Melanie Grunow Sobocinski* the meaning of this Ludi Saeculare ceremony is fairly clear - 'The festival began with nearly a week of preparatory events. First, the citizens brought gifts of agricultural produce (fruges) to various temples. On the following days, they received materials for the ritual purification of private homes (suffimenta) from the priesthood in charge of organizing the Ludi Saeculares ... According to the Augustan acta and Zosimus, the distribution of the suffimenta took place simultaneously at three locations, and the collection of the fruges at four locations. As a result, no firm identification of the temples can be reached without further evidence' Although, she later concedes - 'Scholars interested primarily in architectural form have identified some or even all of the other hexastyle and tetrastyle temple images as representations of the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. This interpretation is plausible for the suffimenta and fruges coin types because the Temple of Jupiter was one of several sites for these two ceremonies.'
Worn, but with the major devices still visible.

RPC 2243 (4 spec.). Hendin 1301.
Acquired from David Hendin, eBay, June 2020. Ex Goldberg 110, 4-5 June 2019, lot 1776 (part). Ex Shlomo Moussaieff Collection.
Agrippa II sporadically struck coinage for the Flavian dynasty throughout his long reign. The coins circulated within his kingdom (Northern Palestine) and were likely coined at Caesaera Panesa, although the mint is not certain (Hendin places it at Caesarea Maritima). Confusingly, Agrippa's mint(s) employed two different dating eras for his coinage - one starting in 56 and the second in 60 or 61. This large bronze struck in the name of Vespasian is dated regnal year 14 by the second era and was produced in either 73 or 74 AD. RPC suggests this issue could possibly commemorate the Roman victory at Masada which occurred around the same time. But taking into account Agrippa's high profile role during the Jewish war the coins could simply be a by-product of his fidelity to the Flavian regime.
Wonderful portrait with hints of desert patina.David Atherton

USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1887"MA-MA" with Statue of Liberty scene and rope border. Like the 1884 "Brooklyn Bridge" piece in this set, this host coin dates to within a year of the opening of the landmark it portrays, and continues the New York theme. Ex-Heritage Long Beach Tokens & Medals Auction #110, Lot 29116, 09/2008. I forget the closing price, but I think it ended up being an upper two-figure price tag. It might be difficult to acquire a similar themed pictorial like that under $100 these days! The engraving on this is skilled but simple, giving it a sort of folksy, whimsical feel, and it's easy to imagine why somebody once chose this as a gift for his mother. If only we knew the rest of the story. Were they immigrants who passed the Statue of Liberty on their way to Ellis Island? Maybe not, but it's fun to think about such things. Needless to say, this piece is a sentimental favorite. Total number of 1887 dimes struck at all mints = 15,737,679.lordmarcovan
