Crawford 261/1 (71 obverse dies/89 reverse dies)

* Gnaeus Domitius (Calvinus?):

Our moneyer belonged to the old plebeian gens Domitia, but his identity is unknown. Babelon and ancient numismatists thought he was Ahenobarbus, the Consul of 96 BC, but it is not possible as he was already moneyer in 118 (the Narbo issue). Crawford postulated that he was from a collateral branch of the Ahenobarbi, and therefore a cousin of the Consul of 96, because he considered here that the Senatus Consultum De Agro Pergameno dates from 131 BC, but it is now dated 101, thus the Cn. Domitius Cn. f. mentioned there is doubtless the future Consul of 96*.

Gnaeus Domitius was more likely a Calvinus, from the other main stirps of the Domitii, but none of them is known during the 2nd century.

The figure below the chariot on the reverse is quite mysterious. Earlier numismatists thought it was a reference to the dogs fought by Ahenobarbus, the Consul of 122 who vanquished the Allobroges, but it is impossible as the battle was fought in 121, seven years after the denarius. Crawford considers the beast to be a lion, and therefore a reference to games organised by an Aedile; the corn-ear on the obverse would be a further reference to an aedileship.

This coin is illustrated and was first published by Ph. Gysen, Antoniniani avec revers exceptionnel pour Probus, BCEN 35/2 (1998), 43-47, Fig. 4; see also article by Johan van Heesch "Deux aureliani exceptionnels de Probus", Revue Belge de Numismatique, Vol. CXXVI (1980), p. 97-101, where the same reverse is illustrated but with MILITVM FIDES legend and no mintmarks.

COLLECTION NO. 1428

Provenance: Paul Francis Jacquier Auction no. 46 (II part of Ph. Gysen Collection) lot no. 452 = ex Ph. Gysen collection = ex Heidelberger Münzhandlung H. Grün, Auktion 20 (1997) Lot 1130.

One of only 3 known specimens in the world with this extraordinary reverse type and the FIDES MILITVM LEGEND (the other being in M. Vosper collection = ex Gysen collection = ex Jacquier auction 45 lot 1537 = ex NAC auction 8 (1995) lot 921 and CNG auction 85 lot 1137). There are 3 additional similar specimens known with the same reverse type but with MILITVM FIDES legend and no mintmarks (one in British Museum, one in Vienna - both examples illustrated in the above article by Johan van Heesch and one in M. Vosper collection = ex Helios Numismatic Auction 7 lot 897).

A true gem and one of the absolute highlights of my Probus collection. A coin of the highest rarity and numismatic interest!

Belt Plate - 2nd/3rd century - Letter formRoman military belt plate with hanger.

This belt plate, in the form of a letter E with loop underneath, is part of a Roman military sword belt. The full set spelled out VTERE FELIX. The first E always has a loop under it for hanging a purse or knife.

It is dated from the mid-2nd to mid-3rd century AD.
Letter 28 mm tall, total 38 mm tall.

Feugere cites a set found in a Roman tomb in Lyon dated to 197 AD in figure 151 of Weapons of the Romans.
Roman Military Equipment, 2nd edition, figure 101, #1 these belts originate with the legions on the lower and middle Danube and in Dacia and therefore the Lyon tomb must have been of a Danubian legionary.

TRP = This is short for tribunicia potestate - "with the power of the Tribune of the Plebs." The government of Rome was split into the Patricians (who were Senators) and the Plebians. Nine Tribunes of the Plebs were elected by both Plebs and Patricians every year to be in charge of the Plebian assembly. These Tribunes could not be injured because it could be punishable by death. They had veto powers, and they could prevent a law from being passed or an election. An emperor cannot technically rule on the Plebian assembly since he is a Patrician, but by taking the title he could be free from injury. On a coin, if this symbol is followed by a number, it depicts how many times he has been elected Tribune of the Plebs.

Struck by John Hyrcanus, King of Judaea, in the name of the Seleukid King Antiochos VII, Euergetes (Sidetes). Soon after Hyrcanus assumed power, the Seleukid kingdom marched on Jerusalem. Antiochus VII and Hyrcanus I negotiated a treaty that left Hyrcanus a vassal to the Syrian king.

This is coin number 188 of the Chitry Hoard, and appears on plate 28, TM XXV (Cabinet des Médailles of the BnF).

(This is an example of RIC VI 209b / LMCC 7.05.011 without a star in the right field, which is incorrectly attributed in RIC as a separate issue. RIC VI 105 and 106 are said to refer to coins of Maximinus II with a GENIO POP ROM reverse, with a weight of 7.5 – 5 grams. In “The London Mint of Constantius and Constantine”, the authors agree with the argument put forward by Lord Stewartby (Coins of the mint of London from the Boursies Hoard) that coins 101, 102, 105 and 106 are coins of later “right star” issues where the star is missing.
Addenda 1 of the book has an example of a coin with an IMP MAXIMINVS PF AVG obverse (ex Roma Numismatics, June 2011), where the reverse does not have a star in the right field. This coin is from the same reverse die.)

From Numiswiki:
"Having to contest the crown with his competitor Vitellius, whom he three times defeated, Otho was vanquished in his turn at the battle of Bedriacum and rather than be the coccasion of further bloodshed in civil war, he preferred making the sacrifice of his life, and with a frimness wholly unlooked for from so effeminately luxurious a character, deliberately slew himself with his own hand. He died on the 16th of April 69 AD, in the 37th year of his age, having reigned only ninety-five days."
