The FELECI is clear but I am supposing the TAS based upon the spacing and what would appear to be the ghosting of the letter that have been lost through clogging.

BMCRE, RIC and RSC all refer to the same coin in Vienna which is queried as being plated.

Curtis provided this additional information however:-
"Bickford-Smith, Mint of Alexandria, unpublished typescript (1993), p. 91: four specimens known to him, in Vienna, Berlin, Basel, and Tbilisi.

BMC and RIC refer to the Vienna specimen, which they are wrong to classify as a plated hybrid: it is a regular, solid-silver coin."

The following from forum catalog :
"Lepidus was a faithful follower of Julius Caesar, and he served as Praetor and Consul. When Caesar was assassinated, Lepidus was in charge of the cavalry and commanded a legion. This position secured him a place in the Second Triumvirate along Marc Antony and Octavian. His cut was Africa. When Octavian attacked Sextus Pompey's Sicily, Lepidus' ships and troops supported him. In an uninspired move, Lepidus thought he could force Octavian to leave him the island. The two armies separated and isolated skirmishes occurred, but soon the soldiers sick of yet another civil war, acknowledging Octavian's superiority deserted Lepidus en-masse. Lepidus left the island as a simple civilian, retaining only his priesthood, but he was the only defeated Imperator not to suffer a violent death."

Reverse: CIVITAS LONDON / Long cross with three pellets in each angle.
1.41 gm., 19 mm.
North #1065; Seaby #1468.

Classification from North, Vol. 2, p. 24-25; and Seaby 1994:
- E with angular back = types 11b - 15b.
- Bifoliate crown = types 10a - 15b.
- The distinguishing feature is the central fleur of the crown with straight sides and tall lis (fig. 13 on p. 25 of North, vol. 2.)
- Along with this goes the "large smiling face with leering eyes."
- This coins is therefore type 14 -- which is attributed to Edward II.

Perhaps unusual is the obverse legend with two Rs in it, not mentioned by North or Seaby.

Abbasid Al-Mamun Citing Ali Ibn Musa as heir48 viewsAl-Ma'mun AH 199-218 / AD 813-833. AR Dirham (27mm, 2.87 g, 3h). Citing 'Ali ibn Musa al-Rida as heir. Madinat Isbahan mint. Dated AH 202 (AD 817/8). Album 224; ICV 391

This coin is a very rare and historically important coin as it commemorates the significant event that Al-Mamun chose ali ibn musa (Known as Al-Rida) as his heir in order to control the shia rebellions and bring them under control as Al-Rida was leader of Shia muslims at the time. This was just a political move as he was only 2 years the heir . Al-mamun had him poisoned after 2 years in 203 AH . This coin cites the name of Ali Ibn Musa on it as the heir confessing Al-mamun to be Caliph of muslims and Al-Rida to be his heir.

The climax of the Carthaginian invasion of Italy was reached when Tarentum changed sides in 212 BC. The takeover of the city was a carefully planned coup by Hannibal and members of the city's democratic faction who opened the gates to Hannibal's army. The Carthaginians failed to take the citadel, but subsequent fortifications around this enemy stronghold enabled the city to remain under Punic control. Hannibal installed his own magistrates and struck coinage based on the Punic half shekel standard.

Background info courtsey Primaltrek.com

In addition to official coinage, China also has a long history of producing "coin-like" charms, amulets and talismans.

Coins, as a form of money, represent power. Coin-shaped charms are, therefore, a very compact form of power. They are filled with symbolism and are believed by the multitude of Chinese to have vast powers.

Cast throughout the centuries, these ancient charms, informally referred to by the Chinese as "ya sheng coins" (压胜钱), "flower coins" (huaqian 花钱) or "play coins" (wanqian 玩钱), were not used as money but rather to suppress evil spirits, bring "good luck", "good fortune" and to avert misfortune.

For the most part, all these old charms,...were privately cast and their quantities and dates are almost impossible to determine. Nevertheless, they serve as important cultural artifacts from the life of the common Chinese throughout the centuries.

Emperor Shizong did cast coins in earnest beginning in 955 AD, the second year of his Xiande (显德) reign, with the inscription zhou yuan tong bao (周 元通宝). To obtain the copper to make the coins, Emperor Shizong ordered the confiscation of bronze statues from 3,336 Buddhist temples. He also mandated that citizens turn in to the government all bronze utensils with the exception of bronze mirrors.

Zhou yuan tong bao coins are very well made and still exist in large quantities. Because the coins were made from Buddhist statues, they are considered to have special powers. For example, it was believed that the zhou yuan tong bao coin could cure malaria and help women going through a difficult labor.

Because of the common belief that the coin has special powers, the zhou yuan tong bao became very popular as the basis for charms and amulets. There are many charms with the inscription zhou yuan tong bao on the obverse and a dragon and phoenix on the reverse. Images of the Buddha, zodiac animals, and other auspicious objects can also be found on the reverse sides of zhou yuan tong bao charms.

The theme of this charm is "Zhou Chu killing the dragon".

A folk story about Zhou Chu appeared in the 430AD book "A New Account of the Tales of the World" and proved to be very popular. The story claims that Zhou Chu was such a hot-headed bully in his younger days that he was called one of the "Three Scourges" by the villagers in his hometown (in today's Yixing), along with a dragon and a tiger. Upon hearing the term, Zhou Chu went on to kill the tiger and the dragon. After he and the dragon disappeared for 3 days fighting in Lake Tai, the villagers celebrated wildly, just when Zhou Chu returned with the dragon's head. That was when he realized that he was the last scourge that the villagers feared. Determined to mend his old ways, he sought out Eastern Wu generals Lu Ji and Lu Yun, and received encouragement. Eventually he became an accomplished general beloved by his people~Wikipedia

obverse - barbaric, blundered legend, BASILEWS ALEXANDROU, anchor upside-down, as if hanging on the side of a boat, inside circle;
reverse - barbaric blundered Aramaic inscription, King Alexander Year 25, star of eight rays surrounded by circle of dots;

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow put more into the treasury than all the others. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

MEDIEVAL, Spain, Alfonso VI, King of Castille-Leon, A.D.1070-1109, AR Dinero92 viewsAlfonso VI was born c.A.D.1040, he was King of Leon from 1065 to 1070 and King of the reunited Castile and Leon from 1072 until his death in 1109. By 1077 he had proclaimed himself “emperor of all Spain” and his oppression of his Muslim vassals led to the invasion of Spain by an Almoravid army from North Africa in 1086. Price 357526 viewsBoar to the left. CNG 421 lot 81 but I am using the pic from the former sale in HD Rauch 97 lot 109, since its a much better image. Sold for €520 in that auction. (4/14/15 €-$ 1.065) . CNG mentioned previous sale as Ex Áureo & Calicó 293 lot 2018 but that is incorrect info. Also says "From the Collection of José Miguel Márquez del Prado" From my limited research the Price 3575s with the "hairy" boar and angled footstool for Zeus are much less common than the "bald" boar and horizontal footstool style.1 commentsChance Vandal

Lately I have been spending a few hours a night checking the Flavian coins for sale on different sites. I deliberately check the attributions. Looks like it paid off this time. This coin was misattributed by the seller. I am so happy that I bought RIC II Part 1. It has more than paid for itself in its usefulness.

Domitian definitely had a thing for Minerva. She dominates the reverses of the denarii of Domitian. However, this is not an ordinary Domitian Minerva. What makes this coin special is the dating. The most amazing part to me is that IMP XVI (on the reverse) was only in production for 4 days between Oct 30 and Nov 2 of 88 CE. " A diploma dated 7 November 88 proves that IMP XVII had already been proclaimed by then..". According to RIC Part II the hoard evidence reveals that there were only 2 of these counted. This coin was minted just after the secular games issue.

This coin is very rare. There are no examples in the British Museum, Paris collection, or Berlin. There is one in the Vienna Kunthistorisches museum and there is one in the coin catalogue of the Grenoble library.

I am very happy to add this one to my collection. Thanks to a friend and fellow Flavian enthusiast for confirming my attribution. It is very useful to have another pair of eyes you can trust when you suspect a misattribution.

Please forgive the poor photo. This coin is very shiny and thus very difficult to photograph.

ROME ? Q R[branch]Q13 viewsRIC -
An extremely rare coin, belonging to the same issue as RIC VII, 372, a two-standard Gloria issue in the name of Constantine I. Thus to be expected but still of the greatest rarity. It is uncertain where this coin should be placed in the order of marks prior to the weight reduction of 335 but stylistically it is very similar to coins of the R[wreath]Q issue and so should probably be placed immediately before or after that issue. Roma's shoulder, raised upwards, is the same as that encountered on some of the wreath series.
Weight 2.84g.

This type is described by Sir Arthur Evans in ‘The Horsemen of Tarentum’, the same coin which M.P Vlasto later acquired for his own famous collection. This coin isn’t as nice as the Evans/Vlasto specimen, but I was very happy to find it. Left-facing owls are very rare on Tarentine drachms. I have only found one other type with the left facing owl, but that with Athena also facing left (Vlasto 1101, Cote 489).

Here we see Herakles, having strangled the Nemean lion into submission, about to deliver the decisive blow. His knee is on its back and he has the lion by the tail, club raised to bash the life out of the beast.

Vespasian RIC II 106537 viewsVespasian. 69-79 A.D. Rome Mint. 79 A.D. to 24 June. (3.38g, 18.3m, 6h). Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right. Rev: TR POT X COS VIIII, statute of radiate male figure (Sol?) with spear and parazonium, on rostral column. RIC II 1065 (R), BMC 254, RSC 559. Ex. Harry N. Sneh Collection.

This was among Vespasian’s last issue of denarii prior to his death. The rostral column is usually associated with a great military victory. Mattingly supposes this denarius shows the colossus, with the features of Nero or Titus, which was erected in 75 A.D. Recent scholarship questions if the figure isn’t Sol. This specimen has a broad flan, a full weight, and complete legends.

Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: TR POT X COS VIIII; Radiated figure, naked except for slight drapery round thighs, standing r., r. leg bent, resting l. arm bent on column, holding helmet in extended r. hand and transverse spear in l.
RIC 1065 (R). BMC 254. RSC 559. BNC 222.
Acquired from Glenn W. Woods, December 2003.

This denarius is part of the last issue struck for Vespasian in 79. Mattingly speculates the reverse depicts the 120 ft high Colossus erected by Nero for his Golden House (BMCRE p. xlii). According to Dio, the enormous statue was moved by Vespasian in his sixth consulship and set up on the Scared Way. However, it is far more likely to be an imitative design copying a similar type struck for Octavian (BMCRE i, 103, 633).

Fine style. The irregular flan shape is only a minor detraction.
