Gallienus VI 283 Rome 253-268 CE33 viewsGallienus, AE Antoninianus. Rome mint, sole reign.
Obverse - GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right.
Reverse – SOLI CONS AVG, Pegasus springing right, heavenward.
Mintmark A. 20.47 mm., 3.7 g. Cohen 979, Sear 10362
Cohen 979 comment: one of Gallienus last issue. Gallienus was assassinated near Mila while attempting to deal with the userper Aureolus. This coin was a talisman called fo the protection of Gallienus and Rome.
*Some believe the horse to be one of Sol's chariot horesus and the reverse inscription indicates this is probably the case.

001a. Cleopatra VII and Mark Antony50 viewsSYRIA, Coele-Syria. Chalcis ad Libanum. Mark Antony, with Cleopatra VII. 36-31 BC. Æ 19mm (5.45 g, 12h). Dated RY 21 (Egyptian) and 6 (Phoenician) of Cleopatra (32/1 BC). Draped bust of Cleopatra right, wearing stephane / Bare head of Mark Antony right; dates in legend. RPC I 4771; Rouvier 440 (Berytus); SNG München 1006; SNG Copenhagen 383 (Phoenicia). Near Fine, green patina.

Chalcis was given by Antony to Cleopatra in 36 BC. At the culmination of his spectacular triumph at Alexandria two years later, further eastern territories - some belonging to Rome - were bestowed on the children of the newly hailed “Queen of Kings” (referred to as the “Donations of Alexandria”). Shortly after, Antony formally divorced Octavia, the sister of Octavian. These actions fueled Octavian’s propagandistic efforts to win the support of Rome’s political elite and ultimately led to the Senate’s declaration of war on Cleopatra in 32 BC.

Seleuco III, Soter Cerauno.jpg
05-02 - Seleuco III, Soter Cerauno (226 - 223 A.C.)52 viewsSeleuco III Sóter Cerauno (? - 223 adC).
"This is an extremely rare issue of Probus, which Pink attributes to the 4th emission of Siscia mint. It seems that RIC 695 is incorrectly described: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, bust type G (radiate helmeted, cuirassed bust l, holding spear and shield), cited from Voetter.
However, Alföldi lists two examples with obverse legend IMP C PROBVS P F AVG: type 36/1 - Radiate, cuirassed bust right (specimen in Frankfurt) and type 36/2 - Radiate, cuirassed bust left (collection Missong, Vienna), in addition, another specimen of Alf 36/1 is kept in British Museum, coming from Gloucester hoard . All examples have -/-//XXIT mintmark. The same obverse is listed by Pink." by Incerum, thank you Incerum.

NOTE: This is only the 4th specimen in the world known to me.
Extremely rare variant without any mintmarks. This coin is part of a true "adventvs" issue and was most likely distributed by the emperor himself upon entering the city of Siscia contrary to regular issues of coins with the adventvs reverse and mintmarks in the exergue, which often were struck long after the emperor had left the city. Attribution of coins without any mintmarks to a particular mint is done on the basis of careful analysis of the coin's style and lettering.

Obv: PANSA - Mask of bearded Pan facing right, hair decorated with three rows of berries, pedum behind

Rev: C VIBIVS C F C N IOVIS AXVR - Laureate Jupiter Anxurus seated left, holding patera in right hand and sceptre in left hand

Especially well centered and struck on a slightly tight flan with lovely light antique toning covering both surfaces. Most attractive.

CILICIA, Anazarbus; Germanicus10 viewsCILICIA, Anazarbus. Germanicus. Caesar, 15 BC-AD 19. Æ Diassarion (29mm, 16.81 g, 12h). Dated CY 67 (AD 48/9). Bare head right / Laureate head of Zeus Olybris right before mountain with acropolis; ETOYΣ [ZΞ] (date) in exergue. Ziegler 35 (O1/R1); SNG BN –; SNG Levante 1366; RPC II 4060 (same obv. die as illustration). VF, green and red-brown patina, surfaces a little rough. Good portrait and interesting reverse design.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 269 (30 November 2011), lot 257; Hirsch 251 (9 May 2007), lot 861.

RPC gives three possible identifications for the figure on the obverse: Claudius, Britannicus, or Germanicus. Britannicus is the most easily dismissable attribution; as RPC notes (p. 595) the nomenclature would be unlikely for such a date. Levante and Ziegler describe the figure as Claudius (the latter with a question mark), but the varying portrait style and the obverse legend “TIBERIOC KΛAΔIOC KAICAP” on a parellel issue of the same year casts serious doubt. Germanicus then seems the most likely of the three. Ex - CNG

Extremely rare! Gold 1/2 fanam (1/4 rupee in gold), Shah Alam II (1759-1806) as "Shahi Gohar Alam", mintless type, Mughal Empire79 viewsExtremely rare! Gold 1/2 fanam (1/4 rupee in gold), Shah Alam II (1759-1806) as "Shahi Gohar Alam", mintless type, Mughal Empire

Notes: Persian inscription divided with a line: Shah Gohari / Alam * and date ((11)83=1768 AD) / Blank. Mintless type. 7mm, 0.18 grams. Herrli "Gold Fanams" - (listed for a fanam as #8.08.05, mentioned as existing for 1/2 fanam but not illustrated (same die as this half fanam?)).

"Gohar Shah" was the title Shah Alam II used as a Prince (also, the Marathas sometimes struck coins giving this name to Shah Alam II). Herrli could not find an example with a readable word in the second line ("Alam") and reported it as "unread text" - this word is very clear on this coin, completing the reading of the inscriptions on this type.

Gold fanams (weighing 0.36 grams and equal to 1/32nd of a mohur or 1/2 rupee in gold) in the name of various Mughal Emperors are perhaps the most obscure Mughal coins, poorly studied and mostly unlisted in various catalogues. They were issued in various mints, but are often difficult to attribute because of the mint is not readable or absent. This difficulty in attribution is evident from the fact that these coins were attributed to different States, dynasties, people and governors by various scholars.

Half-fanams (weighing about 0.17-0.18 grams and equal to 1/64th mohur or 1/4 rupee in gold) are much more rare and more obscure than the whole fanams. They are unpublished in all catalogues, but were recently mentioned by Herrli in "Gold fanams" for the first time, though not illustrated. These 1/2 fanams were struck from the same dies as the whole fanams, but are much scarcer and extremely difficult to find.

EanredHvaetred1.jpg
King Eanred, Northumbria45 viewsThis coin is likely a counterfeit/reproduction of a genuine Eanred Base-Styca of c. 810AD. It is currently undergoing XRF analysis to determine this. The weight is suspicious at 1.85g though the coin itself, if fake, is dangerously good.

Given that Tony Abramson, an acknowledged specialist has given his initial opinion that it might be genuine from the photo, I sent it to him for a look in the hand.

Discussion with Tony here:

'Dear Alex,
The weight is a real concern but it's difficult to tell just from the photograph - there may be some casting bubbles on the surface. I attach the Museum Reproduction Limited's no. 382 which differs from your coin. Also your's doesn't appear to be dished, so isn't a new Ashmore. I would recommend that you have the coin analysed by XRF or similar to detemine the amount of silver and confirm the presence of trace elements - tin and zinc. This could be done as Sheffield Assay office or at most universities. The leading authority is Peter Northover at Oxford. I can put you in touch.
Regards,
Tony Abramson'

So off it went to Oxford. After XRF analysis at Oxford by Peter Northover, he stated the following, almost as a footnote having discussed at length two doubtful 'Vanimundas Thrymsa':

'The Eanred coin has a composition that matches other early 9th century silver coins in England and is probably OK, although it is a very crisp example.

Regards,
Peter

Further notes added from research email to Tony Abramson:

Just done some basic research on my coin via the EMC. There are 600+ coins of Eanred on there so this really was a quick scan through. Results:

These coins are quite heavy, certainly over the 1.35g you'd 'expect'. In one case, a coin is 2.25g!:

1001.0270
1001.0295
1024.0250
1036.0035
1042.2430

These coins are the same style as mine but no weight recorded:

2001.0274
2001.0270
2001.0600
2001.0601

These are the same as Pirie 2000, P.66 no.146 and 147 in 2 of the cases. Find spots include Sherburn, Wharrem-Le-Street, Staxton, all in Yorkshire on A64, the old Roman road from York to Scarborough. The legend for EANRED is however retrograde on all these coins, but not on mine.

Stewart Lyon and Tony correspondance:

On 08/01/2012 23:56:
Dear Tony,

I just don't believe that a coin weighing 1.8g and having a diameter of close to 15 mm can be a genuine styca of Eanred's reign. It cannot have been difficult to forge styca dies in the 18th or 19th century (though who would want to do it today?) since the designs are simple and the lettering often straightforward, as on Hwaetred's coins. If Peter Northover finds that the trace elements in the silver are consistent with 9th century silver we may have to wonder how this came about, but it would take a lot of persuasion to make me change my opinion that it is false.

Kind regards,
Stewart

Biarnred May 2017 - Updating thoughts - no new news here but to summarise, I am happy to sit this one out. On the one hand I may have identified a fake/reproduction on the market, and this serves as a warning to others. On the otherhand, with its composition and accurate style, just maybe this coin is genuine and represents a coinage now long forgotten, at a higher weight. I suspect that this coin is of relatively modern construction - perhaps some old Stycas (they are common) have been melted down and new dies used to produce this. Further the patination looks false to me, which would back up the age claim. Why? Well you can pick up Stycas virtually for free, and if you have the ability it would be an easy way to make some cash. Saying that, why aren't there more of these? Maybe a short-term venture.

Moneyer: unknown (or Eanbald)
Mint: York (presumably)
S.855
Abramson 78-10
O: +AEDILRED
R: EANBALD
Motif: 5/1

This rare sceat is believed to have been a joint issue, although there is no title for either Æthelred or Eanbald. It is also possible that Eanbald was a moneyer. The type is thought to have been issued in the first part of Æthelred's reign, though this cannot be proven and there is a lack of hoard evidence. Mostly this is presumed because these coins are notably absent from later hoards such as Hexham.

Eanbald's name is often found retrograde on these coins. The king's name similarly has no title. Stylistically the coins resemble the work of Æthelred's second reign moneyer Ceolbald.

This coin is made from the same reverse die as EMC 2009.0361 and EMC 2012.0038, recognizable from a die line/crack extending from the bottom of the cross to the L in Eanbald.

These so-called Campano-Tarentine (or sometimes Bruttio-Tarentine) types are a numismatic enigma.
The idea of an alliance was originally put forth in the 19th century due to the apparent similarity of the obverse portraits of this series with the coins of Neapolis and other Campanian cities. However the nymph depicted here is more likely to be the local Satyra rather than Campanian Parthenope, and there is no direct historical evidence of any alliance between Taras and the Campanians during this period.
The heavier standard may mean that this series was intended to circulate outside of Taras as a federal issue, or possibly as a trade unit. Further, no coins of this type have been found within the city itself.
It has also been suggested that these coins were struck as tribute to Rome, and the apparent timeframe is in line with such a theory.

Titus as Caesar RIC II V036639 viewsTitus as Caesar. 69-79 A.D. Rome Mint. 72-73 A.D. (3.38g, 19.7mm, 6h). Obv: T CAES IMP VESP PON TR POT, laureate head r. Rev: NEP RED, Neptune stg. l. r. foot on globe with acrostolium and sceptre. RIC II V 366, BMC V80, RSC 121. Ex Harry N. Sneh collection.

A type issued earlier for Vespasian in 71 AD for Rome, and again in Antioch. This is a type that gives thanks to Neptune for a successful return by sea voyage, here probably Titus’ return from the east following his success in the Jewish War. Despite the wear and irregular flan, this example has a nice portrait.

Mesembria Tracia - Yelmo.jpg

Trinitite13 viewsTrinitite, also known as atomsite or Alamogordo glass, is the glassy residue left on the desert floor after the plutonium-based Trinity nuclear bomb test on July 16, 1945, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The glass is primarily composed of arkosic sand composed of quartz grains and feldspar (both microcline and smaller amount of plagioclase with small amount of calcite, hornblende and augite in a matrix of sandy clay)[2] that was melted by the atomic blast. It is usually a light green, although color can vary. It is mildly radioactive but safe to handleRandygeki(h2)

A victory type commemorating Vespasian’s victory over the Jews during the First Jewish Revolt between 66 to 70 A.D. Sent by Nero to deal with the rebellion, Vespasain’s success led to the legions in the East declaring him Emperor after Nero’s death during the year of 4 emperors in 69 A.D.

Posthumous issue under Titus, this type celebrates Vespasian’s deification, and commemorates his most important victory, that over the Jews during the First Revolt which raised Vespasian to the purple. This example is minted on a notably wide flan.

Vespasian RIC-70065 viewsAR Denarius, 2.68g (Plated?)
Rome Mint, 74 AD
Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: OB CIVES SERVATOS around oak wreath
RIC 700 (R2). BMC p. 7 †. RSC 275. BNC -.
Ex Private Collection.

A very rare variant of the oak wreath type struck for Vespasian in 74. The much more common variants of this type have SPQR within the oak wreath. Alternately, here we have the legend OB CIVES SERVATOS around the wreath: OB CIVES above; SERVATOS below. This variant is so rare Mattingly citing Cohen in BMCRE stated in a footnote that this type needed verification. Curiously, in the RIC concordance with the first edition, this type is listed as old RIC 17 'Unverified: plated hybrid?' (again citing Cohen) without a new corresponding RIC number even though it is in the catalogue as RIC 700 with no such disclaimers. My example possibly has evidence of being plated; however, the flaking and cracking on the surface could just be due to preservation issues, the style is consistent with official denarii, and it is a double die match with the similarly worn RIC plate coin which shows no signs of plating. Additionally, Curtis Clay has an example from different dies that is solid silver.

The corona civica was originally a military honour bestowed upon a Roman who had saved a fellow citizen's life in battle. It was one of the greatest public honours. In the imperial era the honour developed from a coveted military decoration into an imperial emblem granted by the Senate to the emperor. The wreath was made of oak leaves and is sometimes called a corona quercea after the common name for the oak. The Wreath was awarded to Vespasian by the Senate for rescuing the Roman people from civil war and bringing about peace.

NB: The coin was originally posted here in 2015: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=103696.0
