The attributes of the two major commercial deities, the cornucopia of Fortuna and the caduceus of Mercury, combined here with the trident of Neptune, suggest that Musa may have been involved in shipping.

History: In 172, the Roman legions crossed the Danube into Marcomannic territory. Although few details are known, the Romans achieved success, subjugating the Marcomanni and their allies, the Naristi and the Cotini. This fact is evident from the adoption of the title "Germanicus" by Marcus Aurelius, and the minting of coins with the inscription "Germania subacta". This rare coin is one of them.

Acquired from Leu Numismatik, Web Auction 18, Lot 506, December 19, 2021. ($157)

Following Alexander the Great's conquest of the Achaemenid Empire in 330 B.C. he would use the large silver reserves captured from the recently conquered empire as well as having melted down the Persian silver coinage of the time in order to create his own coins minted to legitimize his reign over the newly established Macedonian Empire. Alexander carefully chose the imagery for which he wanted to portray to his new subjects across the empire like where the reverse of this drachm depicts Zeus seated with his famous iconographic symbol of the Eagle along with Alexander's name in Greek; this is meant to directly tie Alexander as a demi-god and say he is the son of Zeus himself. On the obverse the portrait is said to be of a beardless Hercules with the lionskin cap, but I believe that this is meant to serve a double meaning with the portrait meaning to serve as both the face of Hercules and that of Alexander himself based on what audience may see it. It was culturally unexpectable at this time in Greek culture to depict a living human on coinage rather than gods or mythological creatures, so Alexander was clever enough to disguise himself as Hercules to avoid any scrutiny, but at the same time make the portrait look like himself, so when a Greek looked at the coin they could know that it was Hercules and if a native Persian saw it they would believe it to be of Alexander the Great since the Persians had depicted the portraits of their emperors for years prior to their downfall.

Very fine Style

Annona is the personification of grain supply - very important to the people of Rome. She usually holds corn ears and a cornucopia and has a modius to hand (a measure of grain). Frequently a ship is seen with her indicating the transport of grain, generally from Egypt.

280 BC was the last year the original Tarentine weight standard of 7.8 g remained in place before being reduced to about 6.6 grams, perhaps to match the Roman weight standard of 6 scruples. Likely not coincidentally, this was also the year that Tarentum enlisted the help of the famous general King Pyrrhus of Epirus to fight against the Romans. King Pyrrhus had long dreamed of emulating his cousin Alexander the Great's conquests and saw the conflict with Rome as an opportunity to do so. He arrived in Italy with his army and several war elephants and defeated the Romans twice, but the second victory at Asculum came at such a high cost that he famously said, "If we win one more victory against the Romans, we will be completely ruined." Hence the phrase, a "Pyrrhic victory." He eventually left Southern Italy for Sicily. In the end, Rome won the Pyrrhic War (280-272 B.C.) and forced Tarentum to accept a permanent Roman garrison on its acropolis.

Taras coins minted between 425 and 209 BC typically depict a horseman on the obverse and a young man riding a dolphin on the reverse (Phalanthos, the half-Spartan divine founder of Tarentum supposedly carried to shore by a dolphin after a shipwreck). The horseman designs are believed to represent the worship of the Dioscuri, the twin deities Castor and Pollux (deities of horsemanship, athletes, and soldiers) worshipped in Taras' mother city of Sparta. This particular didrachm features a peaceful scene of a young man crowning a horse, which may commemorate a victory in an athletic contest.

This common copper As issue during Claudius' reign as emperor is quite commonly found in the Roman province of Britannia which was in the process of being conquered by Claudius' Roman legions at the time. Claudius chose this reverse type of the goddess Minerva brandishing a spear and shield to show that despite what contemporaries said about the emperor being weak, mentally disabled, and lame Claudius himself would attempt to dispel those rumors by showing himself to be like Minerva where he is both a strong military commander through conquering Britannia for the empire and by also being wise like Minerva in his governance of the empire and the welfare of the Roman people.

Provenance: Ex Ploil Collection [NAC 101 (24 Oct 2017), Lot 10]; privately purchased December 1980.

Caesar’s “elephant” issue was massive, with Crawford estimating 750 obverse and 833 reverse dies. Stylistic variations range from elephants depicted accurately to elephants with pig-like characteristics. The CAESAR inscriptions on the well-executed elephant varieties typically have letters with serifs; while inscriptions on the piggish varieties have letters without serifs. Woytek believes the series was struck in Gallia Narbonensis and Hispania Citerior in circa 49BC during Caesar’s campaign against Pompey loyalists in Spain. Other scholars, like Crawford and Sear, believe the issue was commenced shortly after Caesar invaded Italy in 49 and continued until the defeat of Pompey at Pharsalus in 48 BCE. What’s clear is that Caesar struck these coins without authority, as he did not hold the office of moneyer or legate. As for interpretation of this coin type, many scholars, including Crawford and Sear, interpret the obverse (elephant trampling the serpent) as representing good (Caesar) triumphing over evil. Michael Harlan interprets the obverse as blaming the civil war on Pompey’s faction; the elephant representing Pompey’s supporter, Metellus Pius Scipio (whose family badge, frequently seen on Metellan coins, is an elephant), trampling the snake symbol of Salus, the health and safety of Rome. The reverse clearly depicts the emblems of the priesthood and alludes to Caesar’s office of pontifex maximus.
