"Sow" series denarius, RRC 121/2Denomination: Denarius
Era: C. 209-195 BC
Metal: AR
Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma R,; X behind. Border of dots
Reverse: Dioscuri on horseback right, each holding spear, star above each head; "Sow" below; ROMA in 3line frame.

Mint: Rome (?)
Weight: 3.36 g
Reference: RRC 121/2
Provenance: NAC 125, Lot 376, June 24, 2021
Ex Sternberg XXI, 1988, 241 and NAC 73, 2013, Student and his Mentor part II, 38 sales.

Very rare. Reverse slightly off-centre, otherwise good extremely fine with lovely reflective surfaces.
Trace of undertype on both obverse and reverse. Note the 2nd border on the lower edge (beaded), and the raised area in front of Roma's obverse face (extended tail of early denarius?), also some hint of undertype below truncation.

ANGLO-SAXON, England, Aethelred II 978 = 1016, Silver PennyObv. Diademed bust right, without scepter.

Rev. Hand of providence between alpha & omega, issuing from cloud composed of parallel lines
S-1144 - First hand type

Æthelred the Unready, or Æthelred II (c. 968 - 23 April 1016), was king of England (978 - 1013 and 1014 - 1016). He was son of King Edgar and Queen Ælfthryth. Æthelred was only about 10 (no more than 13) when his half-brother Edward was murdered. Æthelred was not personally suspected of participation, but as the murder was committed at Corfe Castle by the attendants of Ælfthryth, it made it more difficult for the new king to rally the nation against the military raids by Danes, especially as the legend of St Edward the Martyr grew. Later, Æthelred ordered a massacre of Danish settlers in 1002 and also paid tribute, or Danegeld, to Danish leaders from 991 onwards. His reign was much troubled by Danish Viking raiders. In 1013, Æthelred fled to Normandy and was replaced by Sweyn, who was also king of Denmark. However, Æthelred returned as king after Sweyn died in 1014.

"Unready" is a mistranslation of Old English unræd (meaning bad-counsel) - a twist on his name "Æthelred" (meaning noble-counsel). A better translation would be Redeless - without counsel (Rede).

Gorny & Mosch 216, 16 October 2013, 2446.

Amongst the finest examples of the type known, with a beautifully detailed bust of Artemis.

Pheneos lies at the foot of Mount Kyllene, located near the modern village of Kalyvia and in the ancient region of Arkadia in the Peloponnese. It served as an important cultural centre, notably for holding the Hermaea, a series of ancient Greek festivals in honour of Hermes. The latter god figures prominently on most of the coinage of Pheneos. However, the basis for the iconography of this rare coin is the tradition that Odysseus discovered his lost mares in Phenean territory. In gratitude he erected a temple to Artemis Heurippa (the finder of horses). The legend is recounted by Pausanius (8.14.5) "There stands also a bronze Poseidon, surnamed Horse, whose image, it is said, was dedicated by Odysseus. The legend is that Odysseus lost his mares, traversed Greece in search of them, and on the site in the land of Pheneos where he found his mares founded a sanctuary of Artemis, calling the goddess Horse-finder (Heurippa), and also dedicated the image of Horse Poseidon." Little remains of the ancient city of Pheneos. Like many ancient cities, its coinage, which is of limited volume, remains the most tangible evidence of its existence.

BCC CG18 Herodian Oil Lamp FragmentHerodian Oil Lamp Nozzle
Caesarea Maritima
Late 1st Cent. BCE-Middle 1st Cent. CE
Fragment of a "Jerusalem" Type Herodian
oil lamp consisting of a complete nozzle
attached to a remnant of the body. (Adler
type JERU.1). This lamp had a rounded
wheel-made body and a nozzle that was
made separately, joined to the body, and
then smoothed with a blade, giving it a
splayed shape and concave sides. Decoration
is sparse, consisting of small incised circles
on either side of the wick hole, a horizontal
hashed line across the middle, and two more
circles along the base of the nozzle. The
fine-grained clay has a light charcoal grey
appearance from firing in a low oxygen
environment. This piece, though only a
fragment, is interesting in that it clearly
shows the internal connection of the two
parts that would otherwise be very difficult
to observe.

RIC VI London –

This coin is not listed in RIC with this bust type (CC). It should be listed after London 197. It is in Huvelin as #81. It is in the new London mint book as either 7.04.012 or 7.04.013, the difference being 12 is cuirassed and 13 is draped and cuirassed, with the question being “are all examples actually draped and cuirassed”. On this coin it is too worn to speculate.

Prov: Ex Collections Archer Huntington (1870-1955), American Numismatic Society [Acc. No. 1001.1.22981] & Hispanic Society of America [same No.].

Notes: Archer M. Huntington (AMH) founded the Hispanic Society of America and was a major benefactor of the American Numismatic Society (and president, 1905-10). HSA & ANS remain (for now) neighbors in Manhattan's Audubon Terrace, commissioned by Huntington in 1907.

The two institutions battled in the courts & press over the fate of AMH's collection (c. 2008-12). The ANS, to whom the collection had been on "permanent loan" for >65 years, vehemently opposed a planned sale by HSA, the legal owner of the 37,895 coins. The courts permitted HSA's highly controversial 2012 sale. By summer 2013, though, anonymous donors had returned ~26,500 of them. Remarkably, ANS re-deaccessioned (!) & consigned several thousand to auction, incl. this coin & two others now in my coll.

The dies from which this coin was struck are from the same engraver that cut the obverse dies for the first issues of Sidon and Tyre in the collection. The engraver was transferred to Tarsos from Tyre in 329 BC, thus dating this coin to 329/328 BC – refer Newell Tarsos under Alexander p. 80-81.

Elsen 119, 7 December 2013, 100: ex- P. Schindel Collection

Price suggested that the EΠ monogram of this coin might be the ethnic of Epidauros. He dated this issue to ca. 280-250 BC. However, two specimens with light wear found in Commerce “Seleucus I” 2005 Hoard, buried circa 282/1 BC, imply a date for this issue in the early third century BC. During this period Epidauros was ruled by pro-Macedonian tyrants and the date suggests a possible association with the presence of Demetrios I Poliorketes in the northern Peloponnesos in the period 300-287 BC. Based on the five known examples of the type, the emission was struck from a single obverse and two reverse dies. On the first of these reverse dies the Φ is missing. The progression of a die break on the scalp of the lion skin headdress indicates that the coins from the reverse bearing the Φ were struck after those without the Φ. The Φ thus represents a later addition to epigraphy of the type, suggesting that the EΠ monogram is the primary control and thus possibly the abbreviated ethnic of Epidauros as suggested by Price.

Only two other examples of Price 671 are known, both from a different obverse die to that of this coin. This coin is from the same obverse die as that which struck the BM example of Price 670. On the latter, the die breaks around the eye of Herakles are more advanced, suggesting that Price 671 more correctly precedes the striking of Price 670 in the sequence of Corinthian Alexanders.

This type is quite rare with the legend omitting TR P. Only two specimens are cited by RIC, this coin from the Hauck & Aufhauser 17 auction and another in a private collection.
The reverse type of an Altar with Flame is part of the "pulvinaria" series issued by Titus and Domitian as part of the commemorative issue for the opening games of the Colosseum. It is a carry-over reverse from Domitian as Caesar.

Toned and in excellent condition. An exquisite example of early Domitianic coinage.

An unpublished Neptune type with CENS in the obverse legend. The coin will be 528A (under Vespasian) in the RIC II Addenda. It fits nicely alongside my unpublished V529A Salus from the same series. I think there are still a few other unknown types that will surface for this series - this Neptune reverse for the corresponding Vespasian issue is one that so far is awaiting discovery.

A beautiful denarius in hand with an amazing early portrait. The other two denarii I have from this series also have exemplary portraits. An issue style wise to take note of then.

Ex Gemini X, 13 January 2013, Harry N. Sneh Collection, lot 701. = Helios, ebay, 29 November 2010 (A. Lynn Collection).

This is an extremely rare denarius of Domitian as Caesar, the second earliest minted at Rome. Here the legend is clockwise, the much more common Domitian on horseback type has the legend anticlockwise. The reverse may allude to Domitian's participation in Vespasian and Titus' joint triumph where he rode a 'magnificent' steed. The obverse is a die match with the RIC plate coin from Oxford. Missing from both the BM and Paris collections.

The early portrait on this one is quite outstanding.

Obv: IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.

RIC 64 (R). BMC -. RSC -. BNC 14.
Ex Gemini X, 13 January 2013, Harry N. Sneh Collection, group lot 806.

The pulvinar seat type with a semicircular frame is strangely not a common one among the group four denarii of 81 AD. Also, the presence here of corn ears instead of three crescents is rare as well. The BMCRE notes and the RSC entry cites only the crescents for this type (see my RIC 100 for an example of the crescent type). A rare coin indeed!

A pleasing portrait on an unusually well centered and struck early type. Part of the Pulvinaria series issued by Titus and Domitian.

RIC 0761 Titus as Caesar [Vespasian]Æ Dupondius, 10.82g
Rome mint, 74 AD
Obv: T•CAESAR•IMP•PONT; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: TR•POT•COS III•CENSOR•; Winged caduceus between crossed cornuacopiae
RIC 761 (C). BMC 891. BNC 907. RPC 1991 (2 spec.).
Ex LNE, eBay, 5 August 2020. Formerly in NGC holder 5769771-013, grade 'F'.

A truly remarkable Titus Caesar dupondius struck in Rome under Vespasian, but lacking the traditional radiate portrait on the obverse and the de rigueur S C on the reverse. The reverse with crossed cornucopiae echoes similar types from the East. Traditionally, the issue this rather strange coin is from has been attributed to various different mints over the years. However, hoard and findspot data indicates these coins circulated in the Western empire and not in the East. Ted Buttrey in the RIC II.1 A&C wrote - 'RIC 756-767 are irregular Dupondii, which should be taken together with Asses, semisses and quadrantes (RIC 1564-1581), forming together a single extraordinary issue in four denominations, distinct in typology and metal, as well as overall character from the regular coinage of the year. Although Eastern in aspect and reverse type, the circulation area of the dupondii is almost exclusively Gaul, Germany, Italy – i.e. the West, with scarcely any penetration of the East. Finds of the smaller denominations are rarely attested anywhere, East or West. The Eastern finds appear to be simply the débris of Mediterranean circulation.'

Why was an Eastern flavoured coinage struck for circulation in the West? Perhaps it may be nothing more than Vespasian paying homage to that part of the world that elevated him. This example is the slightly more common right facing portrait, although only 2 specimens are cited from the 'core collections' in RPC.

Fetching dark brown patina in fine style.

Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, bare, l.

RIC 853 (R2). BMC p. 34 note. RSC 374. BNC 161.
Ex Private Collection.

An extremely rare denarius from 76. Left facing, bare head, and COS VII combine to make this an exceptional coin. This is the 7th known specimen: Berlin, Paris, Gemini 2013, Curtis Clay 2010, Private collection, and ebay 2003 (RIC plate coin) are the other examples. All have the same obverse die, Clay 2010 and my coin are die pair matches. These bare portraits were struck with the Pax reverse in both 75 (unique) and in 76. Why the engraver chose an unlaureate bust is a mystery. Perhaps struck in error, which would explain why so few were minted.

I haven't seen a photo of the other unique bare head Pax type from 75 (RIC 773, Vecchi 13, lot 757), but Curtis Clay has confirmed it is a different obverse die and may possibly read COS VII! If true, the bare l. portrait was only struck with the COS VII Pax. Only having the coin in hand will solve the mystery for certain. *

A compact and neat portrait emphasising Vespasian's militaristic look.

* See my RIC 773 for confirmation of the bare head portrait in 75, added December 2017.

This denarius is part of the last issue before Domitian reformed the coinage in 82 AD. Prior to the reform Domitian's coinage maintained the same reverse types (evidenced by this carry over 'pulvinar' reverse of Titus), fabric, fineness, and style as those minted under Titus. After the reform all of that changed, along with the dismissal and banishment of the financial secretary Julius Aug. lib. who presumably did not approve of the new changes.

A sharp looking denarius in hand. Nicely toned too.
