Coin issued in preparation of the celebration of the 900th anniversary of Rome in the year 147 AD. Ancient Roman legend continued from "Mars descends on Rhea Silvia"... He ordered a servant to kill the twins. The servant however decided to set them adrift in the river Tiber. The Tiber, which had overflown, left the infants in a pool by the bank, where a female wolf, who had just lost her own cubs, suckled them. Subsequently, Tiberinus (or Faustulus) rescued the boys and they were raised by his wife Larentia. Romulus and Remus went on to overthrow Amulius, reinstating Numitor as King of Alba Longa. Ephesus struck a series of stylish denarii early in Vespasian's reign. Previously, it was thought all but the first issue were produced with mintmarks, that is until several specimens dated COS III recently surfaced that unquestionably lack any such control marks. The new RIC II.1 Addenda & Corrigenda records three COS III reverse types lacking mintmarks: AVG in oak wreath, confronting heads of Titus and Domitian, and Turreted female bust. All three types are known for Vespasian, just one specimen (turreted female bust) is recorded for Titus Caesar. All of these types are known from unique specimens, except for the AVG in oak wreath type with just two specimens cited by the A&C, the present coin being the second one listed. In all, only five no mintmark specimens for the entire issue are recorded in the A&C - with this latest addition four of them now reside in my collection.

Ted Buttrey wrote in the RIC II Addenda the following concerning the no mintmark issue:

'I’m not terribly happy about this. It’s a convenient way to draw together several pieces which lack the mintmark, placing them after the completion of the ΘΙ and ΘΥ Groups 3-5 and the inception of Group 6 with ΕΡΗ —. But why should they have given up on a mintmark in mid-course, when all of Groups 2-9 are marked? The choices are – (i) mintmark on coins worn away; (ii) engraver forgot to add mintmark to the dies; (iii) issue deliberately produced without mintmark. Assuming (iii) for the moment, the new Group takes the place of fnn. 46-47, pp.162-3, and fits here nicely with V’s title for Groups 5-6, and T’s for Group 6, But I have no fixed opinion, and await the appearance of others of this variety.'

I lean towards iii being the likeliest option - if accidental, why do we not see no mintmarks specimens throughout the series? Why are they only dated COS III? IMHO, the likeliest explanation is the no mintmark denarii were deliberately struck, albeit rather briefly (perhaps only for a few days), prior to or just after the COS III ΘΥ issue and before the much larger EPH issue was struck. 4 commentsDavid Atherton

This is an extremely rare denarius from Ephesus struck without a mintmark and the second known example of the Turreted female bust type lacking one. The Ephesian denarius issues struck under Vespasian all have mintmarks, save for the first and one tiny issue dated COS III. Aside from this turreted female type and the accompanying footnote, this issue is not represented in the new RIC II.1. Ted Buttrey wrote in the RIC II Addenda the following concerning the no mintmark issue:

IMHO, either ii or iii are the most likely option. There are specimens from this non-mintmark issue (such as the present coin) that have no available space on the flan for a mintmark, thus, one was never intended either deliberately or accidentally. No mintmarks occur on various dies spanning different reverse types for both Vespasian and Titus Caesar, because of this I lean more towards this being intentional.

The unfortunate Eadward, with the sobriquet "the Martyr", obviously wasn't destined for long life. Just three years into his reign, the hapless Eadward was killed, probably by his step mother Ælfthryth, mother of his half-brother Æthelred (II).

This particular coin appears to have been from an altered die of Eadgar, with the last three letters of the presumably still serviceable die altered.

Sear 1823Anonymous Class B Follis, weight 10.72g, diameter 29mm.

Class B folles are usually uniform in ornamentation: behind the head of Christ a nimbus cross with a square in each of the N, W and E positions, plus single dots in the NW and NE sectors; also a gospel book decorated with a five-dot quincunx pattern. Apart from crude imitatives (cf. DOC 3(ii) plate LV and Sommer, p.297, 40.4.4 & 40.4.5), specimens which vary from this decorative pattern are rare, but do exist: an article by O. Zervos (Nomismatika Chronika 22, 2003) noted among the Corinth finds five other patterns of privy marks on coins which the author regarded as official. However, the ornamentation on this example is not recorded by Zervos, and so this specimen appears to be a previously undocumented sub-variety.

The edge of this coin is not perpendicular but angled – you can make this out in the picture – so that the reverse face is perhaps a millimetre smaller than the obverse. I assume this means the coin was set into a pendant or similar piece of jewellery for part of its history.

This type is part of a series depicting scenes from ancient Roman legends minted in preparation of the 900th anniversary of the founding of Rome (celebrated on April 21, A.D. 147).
