Scarce early issue of Constantine as Caesar struck at Cyzicus, an eastern mint controlled by Galerius who only begrudgingly recognized Constantine's claim. Constantine appears at Cyzicus only briefly as Caesar in 207, then disappears from this mint until 211, probably after the death of Galerius.

One of the scarcest fully anonymous denarii identified by Crawford as RRC 46/1. There are about 40 known specimens, 9 of which are in museum collections. Pierluigi Debernardi has completed a corpus and die study for this variety finding 15 obverse dies and 15 reverse dies.

The coin is very attractive in hand, with beautiful iridescent toning.

Issues with the reverse "AVG" form rather than "AVGG" are believed to be during Diocletians early reign, before the elevation of Maximian as co-emperor, in 286. These coins are significantly more scarce than the later issues of Antoniniani during the early years of the tetrarchy. Per Hunter after Bastien, this is from the 1st issue of 12 issues from Lyon.

The history leading up to Diocletian’s historically significant reign must include the story of his rise to power. It started with the emperor Carus who made Diocletian commander of the Protectores domestici, the elite cavalry force directly attached to the Imperial household – a post that earned him the honour of a consulship in 283. As such, he took part in Carus's subsequent Persian campaign.

Carus was Killed during the successful War with Persia, leaving his sons Carinus and Numerian as the new Augusti.

Death of Numerian:
March 284 - Numerian was known to be in Emesa (Homes) Syria. It is believed to have been assassinated on his return journey to Rome. Aper, the prefect is traditionally believed to be the assasin. Coins were struck for Numerian as late as November 284

Rise of Diocletian:
November 284 -Numerian's generals and tribunes called a council for the succession, choosing Diocletian as emperor. After his accession, Diocletian and Lucius Caesonius Bassus were named as consuls in place of Carinus.

Over the winter of 284–85, Diocletian advanced west across the Balkans. His armies met Carinus's across the river Margus in Moesia. In the west, Carinus’s rule had become unpopular. When the Battle of Margus began, Carinus’s prefect Aristobulus defected. In the course of the battle, Carinus was killed by his own men. Following Diocletian's victory, both the western and the eastern armies acclaimed him as Emperor.

Brinkman/Debernardi Group 2. style of Dot variety but without dot (As more than half of this variety are). Stylistically very close to group 5 and easily misattributed as I did when when I bid on the coin. The distinguishing characteristic is the curved line on the left border around the legend ROMA.

Large flan, well centered, excellent style, and nicely toned. Two minor old scratches on reverse at 12:00, but strong VF.

Abt. EF, slight doubling on the reverse, good style portrait, substantial remaining silvering and reflective surfaces. London folles are rarely seen with so much silvering. Constantius was responsible for retaking Britain from Allectus. Cloke & Toone comment that the portraits of Constantius are much more likely to be of better, more refined style than those of the other tetrarchs.

Minor flan crack @ 6:00 obv. Otherwise EF

Mint traveling with Pompey. Grueber provides quite a lot of information about the magistrates. Here is an excerpt: Early in 49, Sicinius was appointed a triumvir of the mint in Rome by the party of Pompeywhich was then in power. Who his colleagues may have been we do not know, as their names are not met with on the coinage of that time. On the arrival of Caesar, Sicinius let Rome, evidently in the company of C. Coponius, who was one of the praetors at the breaking out of the Civil war, and who, having espoused the side of Pompey, followed him into Greece, and had command of the Rhodian ships coingointly with C. Marcellus; For we find Sicinius during the same year issuing coins for Coponius in the East in his own name and that of C. Coponius (this issue). On those coins ... Sicinius still styles himself "triumvir."
This coinage which was evidently intended for the use of the fleet commanded by Coponius in the East, is of very exceptional nature, for we have an ordinary moneyer of the Roman mint still using his official title and striking money for a praetor urbanus who had vacated his office. To justify this action, the formula S.C. (Senatus Consulto) is added, in order that it might appear as if the coions were struck under senatorial authority. This instance is quite unique in the whole series of military coinages of the Roman Republic.

Crawford discusses this type only briefly, suggesting unskilled engravers at work. Grueber discusses the issue much more extensively if not speculatively: "D'Ailly, following the suggestion of Cavedoni, attributes the issue of these denarii to a member of the Caedicia gens, a cognomen of which was Noctua (i.e. owl). Q. Caedicius Noctua Q. f was consul in B. C. 289 and censor in B.C. 283, and Q. Caedicius Noctua Q. f. Q. n, Consul in B. C. 256. This cognomen appears to have been assumed by the Caedicia gens, because M. Caedicius informed the tribunes of the people that on the spot in th Via Nova, where at a later time a chapel was placed on the site of the temple of Vesta, he had heard in the silence of the night, superhuman voice commanding him to inform the magistrates that the Gauls were coming (Livy, v. 32). The owl, the vigilant bird of the night, would be a fitting symbol of this supernatural warning. This bird also occurs as a type on autonomous coins of Tarentum in Calabria, of Velia in Lucania, and of other cities of Italy. Both the cities mentiond took an active part in the second Punic war. It is however more probable, as in the case of previous issues, that the owl is the sign of a moneyer rather than aof a mint."

Very rare. Reverse slightly off-centre, otherwise good extremely fine with lovely reflective surfaces.
Trace of undertype on both obverse and reverse. Note the 2nd border on the lower edge (beaded), and the raised area in front of Roma's obverse face (extended tail of early denarius?), also some hint of undertype below truncation.

*This variety is not seen in the RRC plates, but it is depicted and differentiated in Grueber. (See Grueber II p. 188, #186, Plate LXXXIV 8.). Style only seen on 107 ("C"), not on 106 (staff). Crawford doesn't speculate on the meaning of the "C", or whether it is a mintmark or a moneyer's symbol. Sydenham notes that the bronze coins with C are sometimes overstruck on Sardinian coins, suggesting a mint in Sardinia. Grueber speculates that the C is a minmark for Canusium.

The eastern mints Antioch and Alexandria under his control continued to use Nobilisimus Caesar on the coins for Maximinus. The GENIO F-IL AVGG reverse was only minted in Antioch and only for Constantine. Other mints under Galerius and Maximinus used GENIO CAESARIS and GENIO AVGVSTI reverses for either Constantine or Maximinus where the obverse ledgend designates as Filius Augustorum.

Provenance: Aegean Numismatics, February, 2020

Comments: The MP monogram was regarded by both Grueber and Sydenham as a mint mark. D’Ally suggested it might be a moneyer but more likely, two confederate cities. Crawford did not speculate on the meaning of the MP monogram. It has been suggested that MP stands for Metapontum

RRC 93 groups two different styles that could not be more different. 93/1a is characterized with a distinctive head of jupiter with a pointed nose, perpendicular hair above the wreath, and rather straight locks on the back of the neck. The reverse shows victory with natural proportions holding a wreath over a trophy with no skirt or base, but two greaves below the shield. It is not a rare issue, but not common at all. In the recently discovered “VHoard” of more than 1700 victoriati, there were only 4 of this variety.

RRC 93/1b for comparison has a much more rounded head of Jupiter with wavy locks on the back of the neck. The reverse shows Victory as a rather squat figure. RRC 93/1c is of the same style as RRC 93/1b, but is fully anonymous without the MP ligate.

The coin has relatively minor laminations, one on each side, but these are small and in the fields without obstruction of the main devices. Light weight at 2.50 g. Possibly due to the laminations in the flan. Otherwise VF

RRC 53/2 Group 9 is undoubtedly the latest of the subvarieties of 53/2. This is based on hoard evidence and average weight of a large sample that has suggested a weight standard of 3.8g per coin (although this particular coin is heavier).

This variety is characterized by widely separated griffon tufts on the back of the helmet, usually only 4 or 5. Always a streaming cape. Group 9 is further subdivided into two sub-groups. The first, and most common, is the stylistic sibling of the star symbol coins. This example is part of the second sub-group which is characterized by very large eye of Roma and an angular profile. The griffon tufts are more triangular and tend to point outward rather than upward as is characteristic of the first sub-group.

Perhaps the latest of the early anonymous issues with Roma and the dioscuri. The earliest hoard recorded containing this issue was the Masera hoard, RRCH 162.

The rider’s cape is similar to the “streaming” style, except the upper corner of the cape extends further to the left than the lower corner. This is a key distinguishing feature of this variety.

This issue is almost always seen with a two line frame around the ROMA legend. This is one of a few dies with a three line frame.

Comments:
C. Valerius Flaccus. This is the only moneyer who coined with both the X mark of value and also, the XVI mark of value. Sydenham (period IV, series 17-18) suggests the X coins to possibly be earlier and places Valarius first in the sequence of moneyers who minted coins with XVI. Grueber in BMCRR (Vol I, p. 124-125) goes further and suggests that Valerius may have held the office of moneyer two different times in close succession and separates the coins with X and XVI to different groups. Crawford in RRC places Valerius last of these moneyers.

Jencek graded this coin AEF. It is really lovely with little wear, round and well centered. Victory is slightly weak, otherwise fully struck.

Mint: Rome
Weight: 3.90 gm.

Comments:
This unusually elaborate style of Roma on the obverse and the dioscuri on the reverse is unique to this issue, and one of the early deviations from the consistent Roma/Dioscuri fashions of the first 70 years of the denarius.

This issue is quite common with many high grade examples available. The coin is somewhat darkly toned but with underlying silver sheen. Lovely and Near EF.

C TITINI XVI - Denarius, Crawford 226/1bDenomination: Denarius
Era: c. 141 BC
Metal: AR
Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma r. with peaked visor; “XVI” behind; Border of dots
Reverse: Victory in biga right, holding whip in right hand and reins in left; below, C TITINI; in linear frame, ROMA.

Mint: Rome
Weight: 3.93 gm.
Reference: Crawford 226/1b
Provenance: Astarte XX, Lot 65; 30-Oct-2009.

Comments:
This is the scarce elegant style version of this otherwise common issue. In his introduction to RRC, Crawford says:

“…with the issue of C. Titinius, however,
a new style appears, with a rounded ornate head of Roma decorated by a necklace
of pendants instead of a necklace of beads. This new style reappears intermittently,
in the issues of M. Aurelius Cota (no. 229), M. Baebius Tampilus (no. 236) and C.
Serveilius M.f. (no. 239); it also influences what may be called the old style, so that the heads become broader while retaining basically the same features. The original
version of this style appears for the last time in the issues of C. Valerius Flaccus
(no. 228) and M. Aurelius Cota (no. 229)”

I have never seen an example of this style for C. Valerius Flaccus and Crawford does not call it out in his catalog, though he does for M. Aurelius Cota.

The reverse is slightly off-center, obscuring the far horse head so it isn’t complete. Otherwise the coin is GEF and among the finest dies of this engraver.

l IVLI - XVI Denarius, Crawford 224/1Denomination: Denarius
Era: c. 141 BC
Metal: AR
Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma r. with peaked visor; “XVI” behind; Border of dots
Reverse: Dioscuri riding r. l IVLI below and to right of horsemen. ROMA in exergue

Mint: Rome
Weight: 3.75 gm.
Reference: Crawford 224/1
Provenance: John Jencek, 6-July-2009.

Comments:
One of the five issues listed by Crawford in RRC with mark of value XVI, and connected with the retariffing of the denarius from 10 to 16 asses. This retariffing would reduce the amount of silver that could be exchanged for a given amount of bronze.

After these five issues in 141-140 BC, this value marking was mysteriously dropped in favor of the X mark of value, and later the x-dash symbol but the reckoning of 16 asses to 1 denarius remained for the duration of the denarius as a denomination for about 450 years.

Some interesting facts that may help to explain the transition to 16 Asses include:
• The weight of the bronze coinage had significantly dropped over time to well below the uncial standard.
• About the same time as the denarius mark of value change from X to XVI around 140 BC, the As bronze coin ceased to be produced, although its fractions continued to be minted in small quantities.
• The Roman Army was paid in silver, so this retariffing presumably had no impact on their compensation and was not controversial within the army.

The explanation for the abandonment of the XVI mark of value in favor of the (obsolete) X mark of value is unknown.

This coin is the most common of the five issue with XVI mark of value. The reverse is from a somewhat worn die and is off-center, obscuring some of the far dioscuri at 1:00 to 3:00. Otherwise, AEF / VF
