Mattathias Antigonus AE Eight Prutahs. H 1162.Mattathias Antigonus, 40-37 BC, bronze eight prutahs of 23.1 mm, 14.1 grams.

Obverse: Double cornucopias, Hebrew.

Reverse: Greek around wreath.

Especially interesting because the flan was not cast exactly in line, and the stepping is clear on edge.

This is by far the largest coin issued by the Maccabean Kings and it was apparently issued to "compete" with the large bronzes of Herod the Great, whose reign overlapped with Mattathias Antigonus; struck upon a double-thick planchet as is characteristic for this popular type.

Alexander Jannaeus (Yehonatan) AE Prutah. H 1148. Alexander Jannaeus, 103-76 BC, bronze prutah of 13.9 mm, 1.82 grams.

Obverse: Lily with Hebrew inscription "Jonathan the King."

Reverse: Anchor with Greek inscription, "of King Alexander."

When it was issued, this coin was struck in massive numbers. However, during the subsequent rule of Hyrcanus II, the vast majority of them were overstruck, apparently while still in the mint, to create coin Hendin-478. Thus the original lily/anchor type is quite scarce relative to the other Hasmonean prutot.
