The hoard consisted of 3099 coins, of which 875 were minted in Londinium. The earliest coins in the hoard were minted around AD 294 and the latest about AD 308. PAS ID: LIN-F6D516. (RIC VI 55 was described as having the obverse legend GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOBIL C, based on a coin in the British Museum (Maurice ii, p. 6, no 21). However a footnote in RIC says, “Recorded in B.M. ; does it exist anywhere?” It is now likely that a coin with NOBILI C was intended, which is in the British Museum collection (reg. no. B.68; acquisition date 1814).)

RIC VI 209b (var) LMCC 7.05.011(2)
3.84g, 23.5 mm x 24.2 mm
(ex CGB)

This is coin number 188 of the Chitry Hoard, and appears on plate 28, TM XXV (Cabinet des Médailles of the BnF).

(This is an example of RIC VI 209b / LMCC 7.05.011 without a star in the right field, which is incorrectly attributed in RIC as a separate issue. RIC VI 105 and 106 are said to refer to coins of Maximinus II with a GENIO POP ROM reverse, with a weight of 7.5 – 5 grams. In “The London Mint of Constantius and Constantine”, the authors agree with the argument put forward by Lord Stewartby (Coins of the mint of London from the Boursies Hoard) that coins 101, 102, 105 and 106 are coins of later “right star” issues where the star is missing.
Addenda 1 of the book has an example of a coin with an IMP MAXIMINVS PF AVG obverse (ex Roma Numismatics, June 2011), where the reverse does not have a star in the right field. This coin is from the same reverse die.)

(When Maximian Galerius was Caesar, it was easy to distinguish him from Maximian Herculius, as he was given the rank of Caesar on coins and Maximian Herculius was referred to as Augustus. During this time (perhaps towards the end of 307 AD) they were both Augustus. Maximianus Galerius is afforded a more modest legend of IMP MAXIMIANVS PF AVG, whereas Maximian Herculius is given the grander legend of DN MAXIMIANO PFS AVG.)

(When "The London Mint of Constantius and Constantine" was published in 2015, the authors were not aware of any examples of RIC VII 278, which was described as having a cuirassed bust. They reasoned that the draped, cuirassed bust seen on this coin was what was intended by RIC VII 278. Since then, a coin matching the original description of RIC VII 278 has turned up in the Steve Thomas collection and I have acquired one as well. It has been given the number of LMCC 9.05.019.5.

There are two bust types employed for this issue. This one has a draped appearance and is no doubt the reason why RIC described it as radiate, draped and cuirassed. The other bust type is what I would call "classic trabeate", and could not be described as draped or cuirassed.

The original entry for RIC VII 280 was corrected in "The London Mint of Constantius and Constantine" (or LMCC) to a draped and cuirassed bust, as no examples were known with just a cuirassed bust. Addendum 1 of LMCC subsequently listed an example of a true RIC VII 280 type, and gave it the number of 9.05.025.5. This coin is the one that was listed in Addendum 1, and is ex Ron Carney's collection.

(These coins can be distinguished from RIC VI 16a (LMCC 2.01.003) by looking at the bust. The later issues tend to have busts with small heads and elongated necks. This particular coin is of interest because the bust resembles Allectus, the usurper who ruled Britannia before it was reconquered by Rome. It is likely that the mint retained engravers from the London mint of Allectus, in order to produce coins for the tetrarchy.)

(In about 324 AD, the Londinium mint was producing two coin types. One was of Constantine with a SARMATIA DEVICTA reverse, and the other was a CAESARVM NOSTRORVM reverse used on coins of Crispus and Constantine II. This coin is a mixture of the two, with a Constantine obverse and a reverse used for Crispus and Constantine II. In other parts of the Empire, coins of Constantine were produced with a CAESARVM NOSTRORVM reverse, but on those occasions they had VOT XX in the middle of the reverse, and not VOT X like this one. The Forum Members' Gallery has similar coins produced at the Ticinium and Heraclea mints.)

This coin was issued in about 323 AD after Constantine defeated a Sarmatian army who attacked a garrison, which was possibly based at Campona (Campona was south of Aquincum, which is now Budapest). Sarmatia was situated on the other side of the Danube. At the time, Constantine was based in Salonica and was preparing for war with Licinius, who was emperor in the East. Sarmatia Devicta means "Sarmatia has been conquered."
