Notes: Third issue (Jan.) of the joint reign of Caracalla and Geta; possibly struck to commemorate games held in 211 CE to celebrate the victories in Britain. The reverse die has been altered, with XV re-engraved over XIIII. According to FORVM Ancient Coins, “since this modification is present on several dies, it is likely that they were prepared in late 211 [CE] but unused until 212 when the tribunician number had to be changed.” Rare; four specimens in the Reka Devnia Hoard.

According to David Sear, “the river-god on the reverse could easily be the Tyne in North Britain. Severus was on the Northern frontier in 209, when the coin was struck, and was engaged in repairing the Wall. Rx: VICTORI – AE BRIT; Victory seated left on shields, holding shield on right knee and palm. Commemorates victories declared in Britain. Very rare mule; CNG states, “this reverse type is unknown on coins of Geta. It is known, however, for aurei of Caracalla (RIC IV 174). As the reverse die is worn, it is possible that the minters felt the die was too deteriorated to continue producing aurei, but sufficient for striking denarii.” According to Curtis L. Clay, “only one other is known to me, in my collection, from different dies, much less fine, ex Gitbud & Naumann, eBay, 19 March 2011.”

Elagabalus, 218–22 CEAR denarius, Antioch, 219 CE; 19mm, 12h, 3.18g. BMCRE 277, RIC 188, RSC 27a. Obv: ANTONINVS PIVS FEL AVG; laureate and draped bust right. Rx: FELICITAS TEMP; ship with sail, seven rowers, and pilot; standard and acrostolium on stern, furled sail at prow.

Notes: Refers to Elagabalus's triumphant journey to Rome. Apparently the die cutter misjudged the letterspacing of the obverse legend, so he cut a tiny “G” to make it fit. Rare; sixteen specimens in the Reka Devnia hoard.
