Hamburger assigned this type to the mint
at Caesarea based on the frequency of finds
(125 pieces in his collection), as well as the
importance of the galley to the harbor of
Caesarea. He suggests a date spanning the
early to late 3rd century CE based on the
popularity of the bust of Tyche on colonial
coinage from that era. See: H. Hamburger,

This tiny coin may be an imitation or even an
official issue of a Late Roman type known for
Theodosius II and Valentinian III. Per Hamburger:
"In the IVth and Vth centuries Roman bronze
coinage becomes progressively smaller with the
passage of each decade, so that by the time of
Arcadius, Theodosius, Valentinian III etc. the
coins are reduced to 10 mm... Considering the
extremely small size of the regular coins, it is
remarkable that it has been possible to find any
of the still smaller minute coins of this period..."

This rare coin is part of a series of mid-2nd cent.
issues portraying at least eleven Roman deities,
and also the Four Seasons. They depict a portrait
of the deity along with an attribute of the deity on
the reverse, or otherwise an attribute on either side.
The portrait on this type is sometimes seen wearing
a calathus, and so in those cases may be intended
to represent a syncretized Jupiter-Serapis, popular
in the Roman world at that time.v-dromeFeb 10, 2024

This very tiny coin is similar to Hamburger #119
Atiqot English Series, Vol.1, 1954. “Minute Coins
from Caesarea Maritima”. Dr. Hamburger published
six coins with similar motifs. These coins bear either
a male or female head on the obverse, and anywhere
from 2-4 heads or busts, often crudely rendered,
on the reverse. He was unable to assign a date or
a place of minting based on the style of the designs,
and these coins remain a mystery.v-dromeJan 10, 2024

BCC CG44 Red Slip Ware WreathRoman Pottery Fragment
Caesarea Maritima
1st-5th century CE?
Rim and wall fragment of a thin, delicately
formed Roman terracotta red-slip bowl.
Decorated with a double row of impressed,
kidney-shaped leaf designs, resembling a
wreath encircling the vessel half-way between
the rim and the base. These depressions are
visible as slight protrusions on the interior of
the piece. The lip is augmented with a 1.1cm.
wide band divided by an incised double groove.
There is a faint corresponding groove on the
interior of the rim. Moulded, wheel made and
incised, the interior and exterior surfaces are
marked with fine horizontal striations. There
is a slight angularity near the bottom of the wall
as it transitions into the base. The matrix is a
fine-grained, light reddish-tan clay with minor
porosity. Ringing sound when dropped.
5.0 x 3.8 x 0.3cm. (rim 0.6cm.) 9.64gm.
