The seller identified this as from Trier, but now that I see the mintmark a bit clearer, I am thinking maybe it's an official issue from Heraclea?Matthew W2Jul 07, 2010

The reverse is still a bit encrusted. Also, the lettering on the obverse does not seem consistent with "Urbs Roma" - any ideas?Matthew W2Jul 07, 2010

Exergue seems to be: (dot?) SM.... (this could possibly be cleaned a bit further to reveal more detail, but I am suspicious that the third letter in the exergue is H, so I am not sure that further cleaning would be worthwhile, at least not until my cleaning skills improve).4 commentsMatthew W2Jun 20, 2010

attribution almost certainLooks like this is a Secvritas Repvblicae of Gratian RIC IX SISCIA 15c Type X
obv: DN GRATIANVS PF AVG
rev: SECVRITAS REIPUBLICAE with dot ASISC in exergue
Victory advancing left, with wreath and palm branch in hand.
There should be an R in the left field, but I don't see it yet...

Less crusty, maybe less mysteryI couldn't resist poking this one a bit more today.... More detail is coming clear. The obverse is correctly oriented - the first two letters of the legend are clearly DN. The third is either C or G. Some details of the portrait can be seen, including the diadem. The reverse is now also correctly oriented. The mintmark SIS can be seen in the exergue, though the officina mark is still hidden. Based on the shape of the reverse, I would be surprised if this were a FEL TEMP REPARATIO, so maybe the third character is a G, and this is Gratian rather than Constantius II (are there other possibilities for that obverse legend?)2 commentsMatthew W2Feb 04, 2010

Heavily Encrusted mysteryThis is already after about 20 minutes with a dental pick and a stiff nylon brush attachment on my dremel. 1.88 grams; 18.46 mm. The blurry brown areas are the coin surface - my scanner can't focus to that depth. The coin's surface is very rough to the touch. I believe the image on the left is the obverse, and is in the correct orientation. I have no idea about the reverse. This one may be in quite good condition under the encrustation - I can't wait to see what it is!1 commentsMatthew W2Feb 03, 2010
