Cybele, the mother of the Gods was the favourite deity of the Carthagenians; here the lion, which Virgil tells us (Æneid lib. 3) was tamed by Cybele, may be taken as an emblem of Africa (Septimus Severus, Caracallas father, originated there).

(Bacchus collection)

The oval countermark (between M & D) is Howgego 100, described as bust right. It probably depicts Elagabalus since his coins of Aegeae are plentiful (although never found countermarked). Howgego lists 11 specimens of this countermark, 1 of which on a Macrinus/Diadumenian coin. The countermark in the rectangular punch (behind D) is probably Howgego 200, of which only 3 specimens are noted. It is described as Tyche, turreted right. Two of these three listed by Howgego are of Diadumenian. Howgego lists only one coin that combins H100 and H200.

China Hou Pu "Spade" 14-22ADNot a lot to say about these. It has a value of 25 "Wu Ch'u " and though minted 14-22AD is modeled after the spade money of some 200 years earlier. The inscriptions translate litterally to "The pu currency" This one is about uncirculated

Copper / Bronze
Size 95 mm
Weight 53g
Early 18th C
Ref. Mitchiner 3018

This coinage consists of a series of unstamped billion or near copper/brass ingots from what is modern-day Thailand. The slightly raised ends leads to the popular name of "canoe money". This one being 95mm long is one of the early ones. The practice of making these probably ended with the establishment of the French Protectrate in 1889.

*Purchased from Robert Tye in 1992.
