Regling's monograph from 1906 was the first die study of any Greek coinage to be published. The obverse die break is known from at least 4 other specimans (Roma, CNG, Nomos, Seaby's Coin & Medal bulletin April 1975, A236 and front cover) all sharing the same obverse and reverse dies. Further examination could possibly help place the coins in chronological order of striking based on die wear.
I missed out acquiring the Seaby coin when it was auctioned at the Geoffry Bell Toronto Coin Auction in 2017. Since then I've been on the lookout for one of these coins with the die break. 7 years later, I finally added one to my collection.Jay GT4Mar 08, 2024

TRIPTOLEMOS (Triptolemus) was a demi-god of the Eleusinian mysteries who presided over the sowing of grain-seed and the milling of wheat. He was one of the Eleusinian princes who hospitably received the goddess Demeter when she was mourning the loss of her daughter.

This coin was described by the auction house as a Limes (unofficial) coin. However, this coin is indeed solid silver with a heavy dark toning and encrustations, as can be seen on the reverse. The double strike obverse, Ad Marco scoop on the reverse and being a double die match to the Sneh coin make this an official coin from Antioch. Interestingly, the Antioch version is more common than the Rome mint issue. One which I am happy to add to my collection. The reverse depicts Domitian participating in the Judaea Capta triumph of 71 A.D. He is, as Josephus described him, riding alongside in magnificent apparel and mounted on a horse that was itself a site worth seeing.
RIC notes that this is "presumably a mule, with the reverse of Domitian from the parallel issue." David Atherton believes the reverse die is intentional for both Titus and Domitian, making this an official pairing of dies for Titus. Regardless, the type is very rare. A much sought after and unique Judaea Capta denarius struck at Lyon (Lugdunum) in 71 CE. This example is solid silver with wonderful dark toning and hints of iridescence. The bottom of the letters in IVDAEA can just be made out on the reverse.
The vast majority of these denarii on the market today are plated contemporary forgeries. David Atherton states that nearly 60% of the Devicta coins he's seen in trade are plated. There are no known die links between plated and solid examples. However, because of the sheer amount of plated coins in existance, some have speculated that they are semi-official. The type is very difficult to attain on the market as either a fouree or solid silver. The forthcoming Addenda has changed the frequency from (C) to (R). Thanks to David for helping me secure this fantastic and historical piece!

In 64/3 BC Roman troops under Pompey liberated the Greek cities in Judaea conquered by Alexander Jannaeus. Pompey personally supervised the reconstruction of Gadara. In commemoration of this event the people of Gadara established the year 64/3 BC as the beginning of a new era for their history, in substitution for the Seleukid era.
Seyrig and Spijkerman attributed this type to the city of Gadara in the Decapolis, however, Kushnir-Stein, followed by Kindler and Meshorer, rejected that based on style, flan manufacture, and find locations. Most of the coins of this type have been found in Lebanon leading Meshorer to place them in the Iturean section of Sofaer, however, they lack the typical monograms and legends found on other Iturean coins leaving their exact origin still unknown. Pulled this one out of a $10 pick bin. It was covered in a thick dark sticky film but was recognizable as a Flavian. A few dips in acetone and Vespasian came to the surface. Perhaps someone striped the patina at some point and tried repatination. In any case, the coin still toned under the film and now has a chocolate patina. Not so rough in hand. The very first Judaea Capta type commemorating the defeat of Aristobulus II in trying to usurp the High Priesthood and Kingship from his brother Hyrcanus II.
From Hendin's Guide to Biblical Coins volume 6:
"Bacchus the Jew has been an enigma in numismatics. The most popular opinion is that the figure on the coin represents Aristobulus II, ally of Aretas III, and commemorates Aristobulus' unsuccessful insurrection against both his brother Hyrcanus II and Pompey the Great.
"I suggest that BACCHIVS IVDAEVS is not only half-playful, but tauntingly mean and mischievous as well. There are numerous suggestions that many Romans and Greeks believed the ancient Jewish religion to be a cult of Dionysus, the popular god of grapes and winemaking, feasting, drunken behavior, and ecstasy. Josephus does not discuss any aspects of Bacchus and the Jews, but he mentions that Herod I presented a golden vine to the Temple. It was used to hang donatives of golden grapes and vine leaves and the vine was said to be part of the booty taken to Rome by Titus. Among the important prayers in Judaism, both ancient and modern, are those prayers that call upon the monotheistic God to bless "the fruit of the vine."
Grapes were also one of the seven species listed in Deuteronomy 8:8 as special products of the ancient Land of Israel. The relationship the Greeks and Romans fantasized to exist between the Jews and Dionysus may also be related to the traditional mythology that Dionysus was the son of Semele, "who was the daughter of Cadmus, who, being a Phoenician, was a Semite who spoke a language closely akin to Hebrew." One interpretation is that this coin was Issued to commemorate a victory in Britain by Agricola, in connection with Titus' 15th imperial acclamation. However, there is no evidence for this supposed British Victory on any other coin of Titus. Hendin classifies this as a Judaea Capta issue, which is understandable given the iconography. When considered together with the entirety of Titus' coinage, it becomes apparent this is in fact a Jewish war commemorative.

A fairly rare type from the beginning of Titus reign which omits the PP ending. The coin copies a type issued by Vespasian, which itself copies an earlier type for Augustus. Mattingly argues the reverse is the colossus built by Nero which stood in the Domus Aurea. Vespasian renamed the statue Sol by adding a radiate crown and moved it outside of the Flavian amphitheater. The story goes, (according to one of the more popular theories) that the Flavian amphitheater got it's name, the Colesseum because of its proximity to the Colossus.

Part of a small series of tetradrachms struck in Caesarea Maritima shortly after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE.
After its fall, Titus spent three days outside the city handing out rewards and spoils to his troops.
"Then descending with his army to Caesarea Maritima, he there deposited the bulk of his spoils and directed that his prisoners should be kept in custody; for the winter season prevented his sailing for Italy" (Josephus)
It has been suggested this series of tetradrachms was struck during Titus' time in Caesaera. The style is fairly crude and is similar to other bronze coins attributed to Caesarea Maritima. Silver quality is not standardized, which gives evidence of a military issue. Being stuck just days or weeks after the fall of Jerusalem, surely these were part of the rewards Titus distributed to the troops.

It has been proposed that the cow depicted on this type is one of the famous statues by the fifth century BCE Greek sculptor Myron. Myron's statues were brought to Rome by Augustus and were placed in the temple of Apollo on the Palatine in 28 BCE. Vespasian moved them to the new Temple of Pax that he began constructing in 71 CE, to celebrate the end of the Jewish War.

RIC simply calls them Mint(s) of Asia Minor (uncertain: Ephesus?) While M. Grant links them to the mysterious "O" mint. Either way, all the bronze coins from this issue are fairly rare. Shekels were minted in all five years of the revolt with year 1 being scarce, years 2 and 3 the most common, year 4 very rare and year 5 the rarest. Only about 25 of the year 5 shekels are recorded. The rarity and price excludes me from the market for a real coin, hence the purchase of a modern hand struck replica in silver.

Hendin translates the Aramaic as "Mazaios who is over Eber Nahara and Cilicia." The similarity of this inscription and a descriptive phrase used in the Biblical texts of Ezra and Nehemiah has led to Hendin's suggestion that the walls on this coin represent the ones encompassing Jerusalem, which less than a century before had been rebuilt by Nehemiah, as related in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Both Nehemiah and Mazaeus (Mazdai) were Persian court officials, so they used similar phraseology for administrative and geographical regions. Mazaeus was governor, or satrap, of the land of Beyond the River around 350 BCE. Governing from Tarsus, the administrative capital, Mazaeus is telling us that he is in charge of "Beyond the River."

All Bar Kokhba coins are over struck on contemporary coins circulating in Judaea at the time. A mint has not been found, but Herodium has been suggested (by Barag) as the location for the "regular" mint and Jerusalem for the "irregular" issues.
From David Hendin's "Guide to Biblical Coins 5th Edition":
"From the Roman point of view, both were irregular rebel mints. For the Bar Kokhba administration the "irregular" mint was a second, subsidiary, mint operating not at the central mint but at a different location, and there is no reason to assume that it was considered to be irregular. The occasional reference to these coins as "irregular" does not carry much weight. In the eyes of the Greeks and Romans all Jewish coinage was no doubt considered "irregular coinage"
