This unstruck lead planchet is possibly of the Hasmonean time period based on size and weight, although it is not possible to attribute it to any specific coinage issuer with absolute certainty. The center dot from the casting mould is prominent on the "obverse", and the "reverse" is completely smooth and blank.

Otho's reign was so short-lived, that he struck no bronze coins at the mint in Rome, only silver denarii and gold aurei. Only the provincial mint at Antioch struck bronze coins in his name. And because of the shortness of his reign, the engravers in Antioch had no likeness of Otho on which to model their coins’ image. So they went with a more “classical” image which, as we now know, really had very little in common with his true likeness.

Herod I - 4 prutot (dated year 3 = either 40BC or 37BC)Hendin-487 / 1170 (02)
5.3 grams
The dating of these coins is subject to debate. Some say that because Herod was appointed Tetrarch of Samaria by Marc Antony in 42BC, that "year 3" would correspond to 40/39BC. Others feel that because Herod was appointed King of Judaea by the Roman Senate in 40BC, that "year three" should then represent 37BC. In all reality, the debate will most likely never be settled conclusively, one way or the other.
