minima.jpg
Minima of CaesareaCaesarea Maritima mint. AE 6 mm, 0.35 g. 2nd Century CE. Obverse: Bust (Hercules?) right. Reverse: Boar or wolf standing right. H. Hamburger "Minute Coins from Caesarea Maritima," (Atiqot vol. 1, 1954), #57. BCC m41.

This is one of the smallest coin types mentioned in Hamburger. Stunning black Caesarea-style patina. Coin much nicer in hand then in picture.

During the second century CE, a small unofficial mint in Caesarea, a city on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in modern-day Israel, was established to mint large quantities of small denominations, perhaps because there was a lack of small denominations in the region. These "minimai" are usually very crude imitations of earlier official issues. H. Hamburger estimated that only 1 in 10 minimai have identifiable designs due the excessive wear that is usually found on these coins.

Ex. Coll: J. Berlin, Caesarea series.

IVDAEA_CAPTA.jpg
Vespasian RIC II IVDAEA CAPTAVespasian 69-79 A.D. AR Denarius. Rome Mint 69-70 A.D. Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right. Rev: IVDAEA in exergue, Judaea seated right, head resing on hand in mourning, to right of trophy. RIC II 2, Hendin 1479.
Lucas H image.

A very historically significant coin minted by the Romans to commemorate the conquest of Judaea. This Judaea Capta (Judaea Captured) series of coins was the largest issue ever to commemorate the defeat of a nation.

Thanks very much to Lucas H!

Prutah of Porcius Festus under NeroAE Prutah, Year 5 (58/59 C.E.).Obverse: NEP/WNO/C (Nero) ,mostly in retrograde, within wreath, tied at bottom with X. Reverse: Vertical Palm branch surrounded by LE KAICAPOC (Year 5, caesar). Hendin 1351 (formerly Hendin 653), TJC 345, AJC 35, RPC I 4972.
The retrograde legends are likely due to an illiterate die cutter.

Alexander Jannaeus Hendin 474Minted By: Alexander Jannaeus
In the name of: Alexander Jannaeus
Reference: Hendin 474
Obverse description: Within wreath, the Hebrew text “Jonathan the high priest and council of the Jews”
Obverse legend: Yehonatan HaKohen Gadol V'Ḥaver HaYehudim
Reverse description: Double cornucopiae, ribbons around, pomegranate between horns.
Year: Undated, between 103-76 BCE.
Its interesting that Gadol (high [priest], lit. "big") it spelled with a vav (GDOL), and not just GDL, like its commonly writen. Also, the vav in gadol usually occurs on prutot of Aristobulus.

Text is:
NOHY
GHNT
VHVLOD
YHR

festus.jpg
Retrograde prutah of FestusCoin type: Prutah
Ruler: Porcius Festus
Reference: Hendin 653
Obverse description: Greek text meaning “Nero” within wreath.
Obverse legend: NEP WNO C
Reverse description: Palm branch facing up with Greek text meaning “Caesar” and date (year 5 =58 CE) .
Reverse legend: Date LE, KAICAPOC
Year: 58 CE

This type is very crude, because caion standards during Festus was very low, possibly because coins were the last thing on people's minds during 58 CE, keeping in mind he was the last person to mint coins before the First Jewish Revolt.

Hyrcanus I AE prutahHendin 457. Hasmonian Kingdom of Judaea, John Hyrcanus I AE Prutah. 135-104 BC. Archaic Hebrew text within wreath: Yehohanan the High Priest and the Council of the Jews / Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons and pomegranate between, Faded monogram to the bottom left. Hyrcanus I really put the Hasmonean country on the map by conquering so much land around, making Judaea the biggest it has ever been, larger then during the reign of King Solomon.
