These are two woodcut prints with hand colored sketches and hand-written notes. This is original from the AD 1545 Octavo edition. Issued in Läbliche abbildung und contrafaytung aller kreüter so ... inn dem ersten theyl seins neüwen kreüterbuchs hat begriffen, in ein kleinere form auff das allerartlichste gezogen ... Basel, Isingrin 1545.
Fuch’s work and its beautiful illustrations effected a revolution in the natural sciences, comparable to that of Copernicus in astronomy and Vesalius in anatomy, both of which were published the following year, AD 1543. To effect this reform accurate illustration and identification was the first requirement and it was to this task that Fuchs addressed himself. Fuchs employed the best artists then available in Basle: Albrecht Meyer did the drawings, Heinrich Füllmaurer transferred them to the woodblocks, and they were cut by Veit Rudolph Speckle. All three are depicted in the book, the first time that book illustrators are themselves portrayed and named. These illustrations set a new standard for botanical depiction and were some of the most influential in botanical history, being copied for innumerable works well into the 18th century. Some 40 species are illustrated for the first time, including several American plants, such as maize and the pumpkin.

These are two woodblock prints with illuminated letters and depict passages from the book of Jeremiah. This superb leaf comes from: Biblia Das ist – Die gantze Heilige, Shrifft – Deudsch. Mart. Luther (Ubers), Wittenberg, H. Lufft, AD 1549.
This was printed about three years after his death and demonstrates his skills as he translated the Bible from Greek and Latin into German. Hans Lufft (1495–1584) was a German printer and publisher, commonly called "the Bible Printer," because in 1534 he printed at Wittenberg the first complete edition of Luther's Bible, in two quarto volumes with illuminations in gold and colors by Lucas Cranach. In the De re coquinaria of Apicius – the only cookbook that has come down to us from antiquity – fish play a major part, but then Apicius was writing for an upper-class clientele, and his recipes do not reflect the diet of an average Roman. As fuel was expensive and many dwellings had no cooking facilities, a hot meal was often obtained from the cook shop on the corner: typically stew or soup based on vegetables and legumes, and bread or porridge to go with it.
The fish product most likely to be found in the average Roman kitchen or cookshop was garum, a sauce made from fermented fish and similar to the sauce known as umami or nuac, which is very popular throughout East Asia today. Garum was used to give flavor to stews, soups and many other dishes; it could also be eaten as a relish on bread.
Anchovies, hamsi and mackerel were among the fish species most often fermented to make sauce, but any fish could be used. Because the mix of fish going into the vats reflected the composition of local catches, there were important differences between garum from different production sites – important, at least, to Roman connoisseurs – and sauce from certain producers was highly prized (and priced). High quality fish sauce was bottled in labeled containers, transported over long distances and sold at high prices. I got this letter from an abandoned farmhouse in Kansas that belonged to my paternal grandfather's father. No one I asked was able to give me information as to who these people were. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay (1800 – 1859) was a British poet, historian and politician. He published this series of popular ballads about heroic episodes in Roman history in 1842.
The tiltle page of this handsomely produced book states this to be a "New Edition" generously illustrated with wood engravings by George Scharf. There is also a tissue-protected front portrait engraving of Macaulay.
James Miller published in New York City from the 1860s to the 1890s. An 1877 "Publisher's Weekly" contains a small announcement that "James Miller, publisher and bookseller, will remove May 1st from his present quarters to 779 Broadway." This dates the book after the 1877 move.
CONDITION: Near Fine. This is an unusually well-preserved copy of a beautifully designed book. It is clean and tightly bound in a hardcover of chocolate-brown cloth with finely detailed gilt, black and blind stamping: gilt and black on front cover and spine, blind stamping on rear cover. Two small pieces of the Berlin WallThe Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. After several weeks of civil unrest, the East German government announced on 9 November 1989 that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans crossed and climbed onto the wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere. Over the next few weeks, a euphoric public and souvenir hunters chipped away parts of the wall; the governments later used industrial equipment to remove most of the rest. Excavated from the Perryville, Kentucky Battlefield - Fought Oct. 8th, 1862.
Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg's autumn 1862 invasion of Kentucky had reached the outskirts of Louisville and Cincinnati, but he was forced to retreat and regroup. On October 7, the Federal army of Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, numbering nearly 55,000, converged on the small crossroads town of Perryville, Kentucky, in three columns.
Union forces first skirmished with Rebel cavalry on the Springfield Pike before the fighting became more general, on Peters Hill, as the grayclad infantry arrived. The next day, at dawn, fighting began again around Peters Hill as a Union division advanced up the pike, halting just before the Confederate line. The fighting then stopped for a time. After noon, a Confederate division struck the Union left flank and forced it to fall back.
When more Confederate divisions joined the fray, the Union line made a stubborn stand, counter attacked, but finally fell back with some troops routed. Buell did not know of the happenings on the field, or he would have sent forward some reserves. Even so, the Union troops on the left flank, reinforced by two brigades, stabilized their line, and the Rebel attack sputtered to a halt.
Later, a Rebel brigade assaulted the Union division on the Springfield Pike but was repulsed and fell back into Perryville. The Yankees pursued, and skirmishing occurred in the streets in the evening before dark. Union reinforcements were threatening the Rebel left flank by now. Bragg, short of men and supplies, withdrew during the night, and, after pausing at Harrodsburg, continued the Confederate retrograde by way of Cumberland Gap into East Tennessee. The Confederate offensive was over, and the Union controlled Kentucky.
