At the age of fourteen, Varius Avitus Bassianus (Elagabalus) inherited the office of high priest of the sun-god Elagabalus at Emesa in Syria. The cult of his sun god was represented by a sacred stone, and in AD 219 when he moved from Emesa to Rome, he took the stone, probably a meteorite, with him. This coin type commemorates this event. During his reign, Elagabalus devoted his efforts to the promotion of his cult god, building a lavish temple to house the stone. TLPJun 04, 2011

Note: This is a very unusual piece in several aspects - first, it is nearly fully silvered, which is very difficult to find from this period on centenionalii. Also, RIC specifically describes the emperor on the reverse as bare-headed, which he is not on this specimen. Normally, the emperor's chlamys is shown long and somewhat flying behind, but on this specimen it is extremely short, possibly so the right field would be available for the epsilon (?) mark (engraver's signature?)

Roman Bronze dedicatory plaqueCirca 2nd-3rd century AD. Length 11cm, height 6.5cm. A thin bronze sheet in the from of a tabula ansata, simple punched frame with crude inscription LIBE / RO PAT (AT ligate) = “Libero Patri” or “For Father Liber (Dionysus)”. Pierced for mounting. Good condition, green patina with sandy encrustation, slightly bent.
The spring Liberalia festival (17 March) was an important rite of passage for a Roman youth. Liber was his patron as he donned the toga of adulthood, and this crude stamped plaque was probably one young man’s offering of thanks to the god for his newly achieved status.TLPAug 31, 2006
