PROBUS RIC 838 E1 BUST OFFICINA 3 PARMA SHIELD OBVERSE: IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG
REVERSE: CLEMENTIA TEMP
BUST TYPE: E1 = Radiate, helmeted and cuirassed bust left, holding Parma shield and spear.
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: *//KA•Ð“•
MINT: Serdica
Issue: 2 (early 277 a.d.)
WEIGHT 3.79g / AXIS: 12h / WIDTH 22-32mm
RIC 838 var. (unlisted with this obverse legend and Parma shieldP
COLLECTION NO. 1549

Only the 3rd example of this exact type known to me (the other being in S. Luethi collection = ex. M. Griffiths coll. and in J. Gesa Kiss coll.)!

NOTE: the Emperor is holding a small, round shield (Parma shield). This type of shield is eagerly sought-after by collectors. It was struck only in the mints of Ticinum, Siscia, Serdica and Cyzicus. While this type of shield is rare on Siscia and Serdica coins it is extremely rare on Ticinum and Cyzicus coins.

As for Serdica, specimens with the Clementia Temp reverse and Parma shield (struck during issue 2) are much, much rarer than same specimens with Parma shield and SOLI INVICTO / VIRTVS PROBI AVG reverses struck during issue 4.

In 354, Constantius II recalled his legate (and cousin) Constantius Gallus to Constantinople after receiving unfavorable reports about him. Caesar of the East, Gallus had successfully suppressed revolts in Palestine and central Anatolia. Constantius stripped him of his rank and later had him executed in Pola (in modern Croatia).

Unlike English silver coins which, with few exceptions were maintained at sterling fineness, these small denomination continental coins were often debased. At the time of issue they would have had a good silver appearance, but after some use their color darkened, hence they became known as "Black Money".
Black money coins were hastily produced in large numbers and often poorly struck. They were the common circulating medium at the time and consequently they became very worn so that, during the ensuing years during which there were frequent re-coinages, they were the first into the melting pot. Surviving examples are therefore now quite rare and most of those that have survived are of a low grade.

Edward III was King of England from January 1327 until his death in 1377. He is noted for his military success and for restoring royal authority after the disastrous and unorthodox reign of his father, Edward II. During his long reign Edward III transformed the Kingdom of England into one of the most formidable military powers in Europe. His reign also saw vital developments in legislation and government, in particular the evolution of the English parliament, though it also saw the ravages of the Black Death.
Edward was crowned at the age of fourteen after his father was deposed by his mother, Isabella of France, and her lover Roger Mortimer. But at the age of seventeen he led a successful coup d'état against Mortimer, whom he executed, and began his personal reign.
In 1337, after a successful campaign in Scotland, Edward declared himself the rightful heir to the French throne which started what was to become known as the Hundred Years' War. Following some initial setbacks, the first part of this war went exceptionally well for England, the victories at Crécy and Poitiers led to the highly favourable Treaty of Brétigny in which, though Edward renounced his claim to the French throne, England made great territorial gains. However Edward's later years were marked by international failure and domestic strife, largely as a result of his inactivity and poor health.
Around 29 September 1376 Edward fell ill with a large abscess and, after a brief period of recovery, the king died of a stroke at Sheen on 21 June. He was succeeded by his ten-year-old grandson, King Richard II, since the Black Prince, Edward's son and Richard's father, had predeceased Edward on 8 June 1376.*AlexApr 27, 2020

Ex: Naville Numismatics Live auction 57 April 26, 2020 Lot 484.

This coin is the perfect exemplar for one of the reasons I love the first year denarii of Domitian. Just look at the portrait-how unusual is that? Truth is there are plenty of unusual portraits on Domitian within his first year denarii. The nose and the whole look of the portrait attracted me to this coin. However, this was not the only box this coin ticked for me. On the reverse is a rare appearance of the Minerva holding victory type. Perhaps one of the reasons I really like this type is precisely because it is so uncommon and is outside of the 4 major Minerva types that dominated the denarii of Domitian.

In 77-78 Lugdunum (modern Lyon) after a hiatus of several years struck a decently sized issue of bronze coinage, presumably to address a shortage in the Western provinces. The types copy those common to Rome and feature distinctive 'blocky' portraits. Sestertii from the issue are quite rare today, with this Salus type perhaps being the most common. According to Mattingly in BMCRE II the Salus type seen here perhaps represents 'the salvation conferred by the imperial system'. Salus here symbolises the health and welfare of the Roman state, not the person of the emperor himself.

Fine Lugdunese style portrait in good metal.

Kings of Macedon. Philip III Arrhidaeus (323-317 B.C.) in type of Philip II (359-336 B.C.)Sear 6689-6691 var. (sequence mark); Le Rider pl. 45, 31-2; Troxell, Studies, Group 6, 362; SNG ANS 621

AR fifth tetradrachm; Amphipolis mint; struck under Antipater or Polyperchon, ca. 320/19-317 B.C. ; 2.54 g., 13.18 mm. max., 180â–«

Obv: Head of Apollo right, wearing tainia

Rev: ΦIΛIΠΠOΥ, rider on horseback facing right, Ε in wreath below

Le Rider notes that these coins are too heavy to be considered tetrobols on the standard of the tetradrachm of the period (ca. 14.29–14.39 g), which would require a coin of, at most, 2.38–2.40 g. Nor are they heavy enough to be truly fifths of a tetradrachm (ca. 2.86–2.88), such as the fifths with the same types were in the lifetime coinage of Philip. Le Rider suggests that these fractions could pass at their period as tetrobols on the Attic standard, but on the whole prefers to regard them as fifths of the tetradrachm. Their correct denomination remains unclear.

The obverse features the head of Apollo, who became the tutelary deity of Philip II in 353 B.C. during the Third Sacred War. Vowing he would fight on behalf of the god, whose sacred treasury at Delphi had been stolen, precipitating the conflict, he used the war as an opportunity to expand his control in Greece. The rider on the reverse, similar to the reverse of Philip II’s tetradrachms, ostensibly extols his victory in the horse race at the Olympic Games in 356 B.C. However, the reverse also recalls the earlier Macedonian royal types, possibly an attempt to emphasize his Macedonian ancestry.
