ex. NAC Auction 106, 09/05/2018, Lot 393

This coin records the brave deeds of the moneyer's ancestor and namesake, Quintus Minucius Thermus who was elected consul in 193 and waged war against the Ligurians, defeating their forces near Pisa. He remained as proconsul in Liguria for 191–190. During this time it appears that he may have won the distinction of the corona civica, the second highest military award to which a Roman could aspire, by saving the life of a fellow citizen in battle through slaying an enemy on a spot not further held by the enemy army that day - this act being depicted on the reverse.

He may also have been the same Thermus who served as military tribune under Scipio in North Africa in 202 BC. Appian relates that about this time there was a cavalry engagement between the forces of Hannibal and those of Scipio near Zama, in which the latter had the advantage. Scipio, learning that Hannibal was short of supplies and was expecting a convoy, sent the military tribune, [Quintus Minucius] Thermus, by night to attack the supply train. Thermus took a position on the crest of a hill at a narrow pass, where he killed 4,000 Africans, took as many more prisoners, and brought the supplies to Scipio.

Reverse die links to Crawford 480/22 (see my example in this Gallery at https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-145227 ), identify this type as one of the earliest issued after Caesar’s assassination, when Antony tried to assert control of Rome. The type is scarce, with Crawford reporting only 5 obverse and 6 reverse dies, and this coin has a rare obverse die with CAESAREIS rather than CAESARIS. Julius Caesar was well known for offering clemency toward his vanquished rivals throughout his career, including toward many of his assassins who sided with Pompey during the Civil War. The obverse of this coin refers to the temple to Caesar’s mercy that the Senate had authorized shortly before the Ides of March. The temple is depicted with minimal special detail because it had certainly not been constructed and possibly not even designed by the time this coin was struck. Some historians believe the temple was never constructed because Octavian (later Augustus), who did not share his uncle’s predilection for clemency toward enemies, did not wish the temple to become a source for unfavorable comparisons. The desultor on the reverse alludes to the Parilian games held in April 44 BCE, after the assassination, in honor of Caesar’s victory at Munda. Desultors were equestrian acrobats who thrilled crowds at the games by leaping from one horse to another at full gallop.

Weight: 6.79 gm.
Reference: RIC 111 (Antioch)
Provenance: Naville 57, April 26, 2020. Lot 653

Comments: Scarce FIL AVG issue, struck at Antioch by Maximinus II who was also demoted to Filius Augustorum at the Carnuntum conference, but both were unaccepting of these downgrades from Caesar. The eastern mints Antioch and Alexandria under his control continued to use Nobilisimus Caesar on the coins for Maximinus. The GENIO F-IL AVGG reverse was only minted in Antioch and only for Constantine. Other mints under Galerius and Maximinus used GENIO CAESARIS and GENIO AVGVSTI reverses for either Constantine or Maximinus where the obverse ledgend designates as Filius Augustorum.

Provenance: CNG 114, Lot 608

Comments: According to Crawford, the reverse recalls victory of Memmius uncle in Bythinia and Pontus c. 58 BC. Michael Harlan makes a good argument that the event was an earlier victory, probably in Spain by the moneyer’s father or grandfather.

Lovely grey old toning, GVF.

RIC 592 DomitianAR Denarius, 3.02g
Rome mint, 88 AD
Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: IMP XV COS XIIII CENS P P P; Minerva stg. r. on capital of rostral column, with spear amd shield; to r., owl (M2)
RIC 592 (R2). BMC -. RSC -. BNC -.
Acquired from eBay, May 2020. Formerly in ANACS holder 6241625, grade F 15, Damaged.

On 1 January 88 Domitian still held his 14th imperial acclamation, but soon he was to rack up three more by the year's end. This denarius is dated by his 15th imperial acclamation, presumably from a Dacian campaign battle, awarded sometime in late summer just before the new title TR P VIII is recorded on the coinage in mid September. The issue from which this coin was struck is quite rare, indicating a very small period of time it could have been struck, perhaps just a few weeks. Missing from the BM and Paris collections. RIC cites one in Madrid and another in a private collection.

Damaged, but nicely toned.

This coin bears the unusual reverse ending in AVG instead of AVGG. Cohen listed this legend, but RIC and RSC cite this as erroneous. But both legend varieties are now known.

The issues from Antioch wich ending on reverse with AVG are scarce among Philip's coinages.

RIC 0736 VespasianÆ Quadrans, 2.79g
Rome Mint, 74 AD
Obv: IMP VESPASIAN AVG; Rudder on globe
Rev: P M TR P P P COS V; S C in field; Caduceus, winged
RIC 736 (R). BMC 706. BNC 726.
Acquired from The Time Machine, eBay, May 2020.

The quadrans in the early imperial period typically lacked an imperial portrait. Tariffed at a quarter of an As, the denomination was possibly deemed too lowly by mint officials to warrant a portrait. They were struck haphazardly and functioned primarily as an urban low value coinage in Rome and central Italy. The quadrans was the typical fee for entry into the baths, a urinal, or for a tryst in a cheap brothel. Being of rather low value quadrantes were not typically hoarded and thus are relatively scarce today being virtually absent from site finds outside central and south-central Italy (in contrast, over 1,827 quadrantes have been found at Pompeii). The rudder on globe can be explained as a symbol of the 'rector orbis' and its pairing with the winged caduceus 'points to the commercial prosperity brought by good government' (BMC II, pp. li, and liii). The COS V issue is the first appearance of the type under Vespasian.

Dark reddish brown patina and nicely centred. A decent example of the type!

I wanted this coin for a few reasons. First I love collecting the rare variants of denarii for Domitian. The Lituus under the triangular frame makes this a rare variant of RIC 3. This variant will be recorded in the RIC II addenda. Secondly, I loved the portrait. Just take a look at that beard. The other reason I wanted this coin is that it was owned by a late Forum member.

Acquired from Romae Aeternae Numismatics, May 2020.

A variant of the Genius reverse with a rare right facing portrait, most of these are seen facing left. GENIO P R - 'The spirit of the Roman people' is not a common motif in Flavian coinage, although ten years previously it was a popular type during the Civil War. H. Mattingly connects the type under Titus with 'the vows undertaken for the first five years of the new reign'. The coin is dated COS VIII which Titus held in 80 (he did not renew the consulship in 81). Missing from the extensive BM and Paris collections.

Fetching dark green patina and decent style.
