Reverse: IMP. CAESAR
Octavian standing in triumphal quadriga to right, holds reigns in left hand and extends (olive or laurel) branch in right hand.

Mint: Either Brundisium or Rome.

References: RIC 264, C115

Notes:
- This historically fascinating denarius celebrates the Battle of Actium in which Agrippa and Octavian triumphed over Antony and Kleopatra. The obverse die is the first of the entire IMP CAESAR series of Octavian; the die is shared with the last of the CAESAR DIVI F denarii of the same design. The reverse may refer to Octavian’s entry into Alexandria following the battle of Actium (31/30 BCE), or the triple triumph subsequently awarded to him in Rome (29BCE) – the dating of the type is still not precisely known.
- After the great struggles between the triumvirs, many soldiers from the vast standing armies needed to be de-commissioned and paid. It is possible that this early type was minted using silver from the Ptolemaic treasury seized by Octavian following the Battle of Actium.
- Brundisium (modern day Brindisi) in southern Italy was Octavian’s naval base, which is where this type may have been minted to pay the soldiers. Alternatively the mint may have been Rome.
- Obverse and reverse die match to LHS Numismatik Auction 103, lot 333, 2008.

Purchased from Praefectus Coins 2015, Ex Nomos Obolos 2 lot 204, 2015

Thank you to Mr Curtis Clay for confirming the die link and providing the published reference to this fact: C.H.V. Sutherland, 1976, Octavian’s Gold and Silver Coinage from c. 32 to 27 B.C.

Obv: IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG PONT; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: TR P COS VII DES VIII P P; Curule chair, wreath above
RIC 46 (R2). BMC -. RSC -. BNC -.
Ex Private Collection, July 2020.

Here is a rare Domitian 'PONT' denarius with the legend variant of DOMITIANVS fully spelled out. Denarii with 'PONT' instead of PM in the obverse legend come very early in the reign. Historically, PONT did not stand for Pontifex Maximus under Augustus, but did so under Nero (PONT was used after Nero was already Pontifex Maximus, BMC 9). It is possible Domitian followed Nero's example and used PONT as an abbreviation for Pontifex Maximus. Conversely, it is also possible he followed in Augustus' footsteps and used the temporary title 'PONT' until the ceremony electing him to the position was completed. We simply do not know. The records of the Arval brothers do not show Domitian as Pontifex Maximus by 30 October, so presumably he acquired the title in either November or December. The office seems to have had no fixed date of appointment. Knowing how much of a stickler Domitian was to keeping to the proper forms, the mint likely waited until his election as Pontifex Maximus before the title was displayed on the coinage. Whether or not that title on the coinage after the election was abbreviated as 'PONT' for a brief time is a mystery. The reverse features a pulvinar type carried-over from Titus's last denarius issue struck in celebration of the Colosseum's dedication. It possibly represents the pulvinar of Divus Vespasian, honouring his labours in building the structure.

RIC 41 (R2). BMC -. RSC -. BNC -.
Ex Private Collection, July 2020.

An early rare 'PONT' denarius struck towards the end of 81. The abbreviation 'PONT' for Ponitfex Maximus must have come early in the sequence of titles Domitian employed on his denarii and likely was short lived if its rarity is any indication. The records of the Arval brothers do not show Domitian as Pontifex Maximus by 30 October, so presumably he acquired the title in either November or December. Some have argued that PONT is the same as PM, I disagree. Titus as Caesar early on had also used the title PONT on his denarii and he was never Pontifex Maximus under Vespasian - only the emperor can be Pontifex Maximus or greatest priest.

Cliffside_Tombs,_Ancient_Kaunos,_Dalyan,_Turkey.jpg
Turkey, Dalyan, Cliffside Tombs of Ancient city of KaunosToday, these elaborate graves form part of the UNESCO-recognised Ancient City of Kaunos, a 2,500-year-old archaeological site also home to a 5,000-seat Hellenistic theatre, a rock-cut Roman bath, and several Lycian temples and churches.
Dating back to the 4th century BC, the “Lycian King Tombs of Kaunos” feature Greek-style pillars and intricate hand-carved reliefs depicting gods, angels and spirits. Inside, ancient monoliths and limestone-lined chambers mark the final resting place of the Lycian elite.
The remarkable structures pictured above are in fact only a small proportion of the 170 or more rock-cut graves of various shapes, making up the Kaunian necropolis. These temple tombs, clustered in two main groups, are the most elaborate graves of the city.

OBV: Roman consul L. Junius Brutus (traditional founder of the Republic) in center, accompanied by two lictors, KOΣΩN in exergue, BR (Brutus) monogram left
REV: eagle standing left on scepter, wings open, raising wreath in right talon
EX: Forum Ancient Coins, American Rare Coins (Ridge, NY)

This type, traditionally attributed to an otherwise unknown Dacian or Sythian king Koson, was struck by Brutus, c. 44 - 42 B.C.,
with gold supplied by the Senate to fund his legions in the Roman civil war against Mark Antony and Octavian.
The obverse imitates a Roman denarius struck by Brutus in 54 B.C. depicting his ancestor L. Junius Brutus, the traditional founder of the Roman Republic.
The reverse imitates a Roman denarius struck by Pomponius Rufus in 73 B.C. The meaning of the inscription "KOΣΩN" is uncertain.
KOΣΩN may have been the name of a Dacian king who supplied mercenary forces to Brutus, or BR KOΣΩN may have been intended to mean "[of] the Consul Brutus."

IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG / IOVI PROPVGNATORI dupondius (231-235 A.D.) Obv.: IMP ALEXAN[DER PIV]S A[VG], bust of Severus Alexander, radiate, right, right, one ribbon behind, one forward across shoulder?, draped over left shoulder?

Rev.: [I]OVI PRO-PVG[N]ATO[R]I, Jupiter, naked except for cape flowing to left, walking left, looking right, brandishing thunderbolt in right hand and holding eagle in left hand. Across fields: S-C.

d 24-25mm, 9.33g, die axis 1h (medal alignment), material: Ӕ / orichalcum (brass)

Authority and portrait: Severus Alexander (reign 222-235). Mint: Rome.

IMP(erator) PIVS = pius (dutiful) AVG(ustus). IOVI PROPVGNATORI= to Jupiter the Defender. Jupiter is often exhibited in the Imperial Series with the surname of Propugnator, to denote that the emperors in their contest with the barbarians were defended in battle by Jove himself; hence they made sacrifices of congratulation on their own safety, in the temple of the god. His main attribute, two-sided and three-pronged thunderbolt, is depicted in the typical Roman manner, long speculated to be akin to Indian vajra, a mystical symbolic weapon with very deep ancient roots with parallels in other mythologies. And Jupiter's primary sacred animal is eagle, aquila, which held precedence over other birds in the taking of auspices and became one of the most common symbols of the Roman army. The two emblems were often combined to represent the god in the form of an eagle holding in its claws a thunderbolt.

RIC IV Severus Alexander 632 (g?).

ID straightforward as RIC 632 (radiate crown points to dupondius, the figure of Jupiter with thunderbolt and eagle to the particular type), but there are three types of bust: f (bare), g (draped over left shoulder) and h (draped), and distinguishing between them without clear examples is difficult. Since the example I found is id'd as type g, and mine seems very similar, I tentatively id this also as 632g.

Commemorative issue for Augustus (died 14 AD)

This interesting issue was struck by Hadrian to commemorate the foundation of Nicopolis by Augustus on the site of the first emperor's greatest victory, the defeat of Marc Antony in the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The legends KTICMA CЄBACTOY / NЄIKOΠΟΛЄωC literally translate as 'foundation of Augustus / Victory city'.

This coin attracted me, even though some reverse elements are slightly off center.
However most didrachms of this late period are very 'mushy', particularly the magistrates name and ethnic, so the scarcity of such a well struck specimen was too alluring to pass up.

The letters "IH" replaced the "A" of Apollonia towards the end of the 2nd Century B.C. and is thought to be an abbreviation of IHTPOY (Healer) with the full meaning: “coins of the town of the god Healer”. The Healer or Bright Healer are epithets of Apollo.

Obv.: Laurate head of Apollo right with hair in bun and a decorated ribbon
Rev.: Upright anchor with thin flukes, its body represented as a sketch of two parallel lines and a thin straight stock; IH to left, crayfish to right.
