Rev: IMP XVI COS XIIII CENS P P P ; Minerva stg. l., with spear (M4)
RIC 655 (R2). BMC -. RSC -. BNC -.
Ex Andrew Short Collection, acquired from Chris Rudd 2019.

An extremely rare IMP XVI Domitian denarius struck fleetingly in the autumn of 88, perhaps for just a few days or weeks judging by the rarity. The rapid accumulation of imperial acclamations during this time period hints at accelerated military activity. Missing from the BM and Paris collections. This coin is a detectorist find from Methwold, Norfolk, UK.

Fine portrait, polished surfaces.

IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG / MARS VLTOR antoninianus (268-270 A.D.) Obv.: [IM]P C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate cuirassed bust of Claudius right, both ribbons behind.

Rev.: MARS [VLTO]R, Mars, walking right, naked except for helmet and some flowing drapery left and right, holding spear transverse in right hand and trophy in left hand.

d oval 16-19+mm, 2.41g, die axis 1h (medal alignment), material: bronze/copper-based alloy supposedly with some silver.

Authority and portrait: Claudius II Gothicus (reign 268-270). Mint: Rome.

IMP = Imperator (Commander-in-Chief), C = Caesar, AVG = Augustus. MARS VLTOR = Mars the Avenger or the Punisher. An important aspect of some Roman deities was their ability to avenge for injuries received by Roman people, this applies especially to their main warlike gods, Jupiter and Mars. So in times of troubles, like the crisis of the 3d century, we often see references to Jupiter or Mars Ultor. High-crested Corinthian helmet and a spear are common attributes of Mars. In this case he also carries a trophy (tropaeum). Trophies, equally by the Romans and the Greeks, were esteemed as the rewards and insignia of victories. In the earlier ages they consisted simply of a trunk of a tree or long pole, to which a little below the top another piece of wood was fastened crosswise, and set up on the field of battle immediately after a victory; this was adorned with spoils, or the armor of the vanquished, customarily a cuirass, a helmet, and a buckler.

RIC V-1 Rome 66; Cohen 160; Sear 11350.

ID straightforward. The bust in all examples is cuirassed with both ribbons behind, but catalogues mention usual bust variations. There may be a mintmark in right or, rarely, left field, H/"N"/"II", all probably designating Greek letter eta, i.e. officina 8. The size in many examples is 20mm or more.

A close type, RIC 67 has IMP CL... in the obverse legend instead of IMP C CL..., but here we clearly see IMP C CL...

Mary married Philip II of Spain on the 25th of July, 1554 and thereafter his name appears along with Mary's in the inscriptions on the coinage. But the full Royal titles were only used for the remaining five months of 1554 after their marriage and coins dated from 1555 onward bear only the English titles.

RIC 0890 VespasianÆ As, 9.63g
Rome mint, 76 AD
Obv: IMP CAESAR VESP AVG COS VII; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: AEQVITAS AVGVST; S C in field; Aequitas stg. l., with scales and rod
RIC 890 (C). BMC -. BNC 755.
Acquired from CGB.fr, August 2020.

Vespasian inherited a financial mess upon his accession in 69. His top priority was putting the state on a sound financial footing. Symbolic of that righting of the empire was the common reverse type of Aequitas. Aequitas holding her scales and measuring rod was probably based on a cult image of the deity. She first shows up as an imperial virtue on the coinage under Galba - a virtue that Vespasian was eager to emulate. This particular COS VII example struck in 76 at Rome is considered by RIC (p. 51) to be one of the most common bronze coins struck for Vespasian. Oddly enough, no examples are in the BM's extensive collection!

Dark brown patina and good style.

25 mm, 8.21 gms

SNG Righetti 1195.

From Leu Numismatik Web Auction 13, lot 888. From the auction catalogue: The Synedrion of the Neoi was the assembly of adolescents of a city between the ephebia and their full membership in the ekklesia, i.e. when they were roughly 20-30 years old. The organization mostly focused on athletic and military exercises in the Hellenistic era, however, by the time the Greek cities fell under control of the Romans, the role must have shifted away from preparing the youth of the polis for war. Although the exact task of the Neoi in the Roman era is hard to assess, public inscriptions in their name attest their continuous significance to the civic life of many Greek cities, perhaps most prominently so in Laodicea ad Lycum, where they even financed the present coin emission (CYNЄΔPIOY NЄΩN is to be read as '[coin of] the Synedrion of the Neoi'). Extremely rare, apparently the third known example.

Acquired from CGB.fr, August 2020.

A generic Victory on prow type struck when Titus held the joint censorship with Vespasian which is advertised in the obverse legend. This Victory type would be repeatedly struck throughout Vespasian's reign for both father and son with the prow possibly alluding to 'Victory at sea'. Some collectors and dealers refer to this as a 'Judaea Capta' type, although there is not an explicit connection. This variant is rated 'rare' by the new RIC II.1.

Good portrait with off-centred reverse.

Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Salus seated left, feeding from patera serpent rising from altar, resting arm on chair. RIC IV 14; RSC 85a. Traces of luster. Superb EF.

Salus was the Roman goddess of health. She was Hygieia to the Greeks (Her name is the source of the word "hygiene." ) , she was the daughter of Aesculapius, the god of medicine and healing, and Epione, the goddess of soothing of pain. Her father Asclepius learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another healing herbs. Woman seeking fertility, the sick, and the injured slept in his temples in chambers where non-poisonous snakes were left to crawl on the floor and provide healing.

Ephesus_Celsus_Library_Facade.jpg
Turkey, Ephesos, Façade of the Celsus library, in Ephesus, near Selçuk, west Turkey.Turkey, Ephesos, Façade of the Celsus library, in Ephesus, near Selçuk, west Turkey.

The Library of Celsus is an ancient Roman building in Ephesus, Anatolia, now part of Selçuk, Turkey. The building was commissioned in the 110s A.D. by a consul, Gaius Julius Aquila, as a funerary monument for his father, former proconsul of Asia Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, and completed during the reign of Hadrian, sometime after Aquila's death. The library is considered an architectural marvel, and is one of the only remaining examples of a library from the Roman Empire. The Library of Celsus was the third-largest library in the Roman world behind only Alexandria and Pergamum, believed to have held around twelve thousand scrolls. Celsus is buried in a crypt beneath the library in a decorated marble sarcophagus. The interior measured roughly 180 square metres (2,000 square feet). The interior of the library and its contents were destroyed in a fire that resulted either from an earthquake or a Gothic invasion in 262 C.E., and the façade by an earthquake in the tenth or eleventh century. It lay in ruins for centuries until the façade was re-erected by archaeologists between 1970 and 1978.

Type A variant
Hollow cast miniature lead vessel in the
shape of an elongated amphora with a
cylindrical or slightly funnel-shaped neck,
an everted rim, and small looped handles,
which are crushed. The almost straight
shoulders, only slightly broader than the
neck, taper in a straight line to a pointed
base. The body is in the unusual form of
an inverted four-sided pyramid. The decoration
consists of horizontal lines creating four registers
with no surviving linear or geometric elements.
The top register, below the shoulder, bears traces
of an inscription, possibly an O followed by an A,
but nothing else is discernible. The two halves are
slightly misaligned, more noticeably along one
seam than the other.

Several theories exist concerning the attribution of coins with this legend. Toda attributed them to Lê Lợi during the War of Independence from the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1417-1428), but the idea lacks solid evidence. Historical evidence suggests that at least some were cast by the MÄ…c at Cao Bằng (1592-1677) or even at Há Tiên, but they would not have been cast in large quantities and diminutive coins with this legend are among the most common Vietnamese cash. They were likely produced at several places, including foreign mints such as Macau. See Thuan D. Luc: Who Cast the An Phap Nguyen Bao Coin? < http://charm.ru/coins/vn/AnPhap.htm >
