Septimius Severus, 9 April 193 - 4 February 211 A.D., Philippopolis, ThraceBronze Assarion, Varbanov Philippopolis XIII.61.3 (O3/R2, new die combination), F, nice green patina, marks, off center, ragged flan, Philippopolis (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) mint, 3.742 grams, 19.4 mm, die axis 0o, 9 Apr 193 - 198; obverse AY KAI CEΠ-T CEVHPOC (or similar, right side off flan), laureate head right; reverse ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛITΩN, tripod lebes, snake entwined around right leg, head left above bowl; scarce.
Wandering the world in a panther-drawn chariot, Dionysos rode ahead of the maenads and satyrs, who sang loudly and danced, flushed with wine. They were profusely garlanded with ivy and held the thyrsus, a staff topped with a pinecone, a symbol of the immortality of his believers. Everywhere he went he taught men how to cultivate vines and the mysteries of his cult. Whoever stood in his way and refused to revere him was punished with madness.

By the time that the Roman central government had recovered control of Britain in AD 296 the antoninianus had been replaced under Diocletian's currency reform. The London mint, which had initially been set up by Carausius, was retained as an official imperial mint under the Tetrarchy, however, apart from an initial issue in 297 marked "LON", it produced only folles without a mintmark for the first decade of its operation.*AlexSep 09, 2020

These coins do not bear inscriptions and it is only recently (2022) that research has permitted their correct dating and attribution to a specific area.
Although originally thought to be Northumbrian and attributed to York, the coinage of series J is now confidently attributed to Mercia. This coin was struck during the period when Æthelbald (716 - 757) was king of Mercia and overlord of Southern England. Æthelbald came to the throne of Mercia in 716 after the death of his cousin, King Ceolred, who had previously driven him into exile. During Æthelbald's long reign, Mercia became the dominant kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons, and the contemporary chronicler, the Venerable Bede, described Æthelbald as ruling all England south of the river Humber.
Æthelbald was killed in 757 by his bodyguards. He was succeeded briefly by Beornred, of whom little is known, but within a year, Offa, the grandson of Æthelbald's cousin Eanwulf, had seized the throne and, under him, Mercia entered its most prosperous and influential period.*AlexSep 08, 2020

PROBUS RIC 463OBVERSE: VIRTVS PROBI AVG
REVERSE: VOTIS X PROBI AVG ET XX
BUST TYPE: E1 = radiate, cuirassed and helmeted bust left, holding spear and shield
MINT: Ticinum
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//-
WEIGHT: 4,22 g / AXIS: 12h / DIAMETER: 22-24mm
RIC: 463
COLLECTION NO. 1560
Note: Extremely rare and desirable reverse type struck only at Ticinum during the third issue in 277 AD celebrating Probus' victorious campaign against the Alamans and Juthungs. This VOTIS reverse variant is much, much rarer than the (also rare and very desirable) VOTIS X ET XX FEL reverse type.
What is more, my coin has a military E1 bust, whereas all the remaining six known to me specimens of this reverse type have a H2 consular bust (of which 2 ex. are in La Venera hoard, 1 ex. is in the American Numismatic Society coll. and and 3 specimens are in private collections).
Although Sylviane Estiot cites 4 examples of this exact type (with E1 bust) in her 2006 article "Une campagne germanique de l’empereur Probus : l’atelier de Ticinum en 277-278" I have never seen this exact type on the market before neither have I ever seen pictures of this exact type anywhere online.
It appears to be only the 5th known example of this exact type and apparently the only one in private collection and the only one whose picture is now publicly available.
A coin of the highest numismatic interest. One of the highlights of my Probus collection! Barnaba6Sep 07, 2020
