This coin has been struck under Varus when he was legatus Augusti pro praetore in Syria 7/6 BC - 5/4 BC. The Jewish historian Josephus mentions the swift action of Varus against a messianic revolt in Judaea after the death of Rome's client king Herod the Great in 4 BC. After occupying Jerusalem, he crucified 2000 Jewish rebels, and may have thus been one of the prime objects of popular anti-Roman sentiment in Judaea, for Josephus, who made every effort to reconcile the Jewish people to Roman rule, felt it necessary to point out how lenient this judicial massacre had been.

Fulvia - Phrygia.JPG
Fulvia - PhrygiaPHRYGIA, Eumeneia
Fulvia, wife of Mark Anthony. Æ 19. Ca. 41-40 B.C.
Obverse: Draped bust of Fulvia as winged Nike right.; 2 cm’s, (1) on head, (2) above head.
Reverse : (ΦYΛOYIANΩN) to right, ΣMEPTOPIΓ(OΣ)/(ΦIΛΩNIΔOY) in 2 lines to l. Athena adv. l., hld. spear and shield.
BMC 20-21 (?); RPC 3139 (7 pcs).
19mm, 6.84 g.
Magistrate: Zmertorigos Philopatris.
Note: Eumeneia changed its name to Fulvia on the occasion of Mark Antony's journey to the east in 41 B.C., likely propmting the issue of coins. After Fulvia died the city took back its old name. On BMC 21 the ethnic "ΦYΛOVIANΩN" may be purposefully erased, which also seems to be the case on this specimen! Both coins are countermarked, and the cm's may be read "EVMENEΩN" and "ΦIΛΩNIΔOY". The purpose of countermarking in combination with the erasure of the city name, thus, seems to have been to make note of second name change. CM(1): Monogram of EVMNO (?), in circ. punch, 4 mm. CM(2): Monogram of ΦIΛNΔ (?), in circ. punch, 3.5 mm.

obv. Bust of nymph Histiaia, draped, wearing necklace and ear-ring, hair rolled up,
decorated with wine-grapes, r.
rev. [ISTI] - AIEWN
Nymph Histiaia, in long garment, holding stylis, std. r. on stern of galley,
ornamented with wings
beneath monogram (ME?) and trident
ref. BMC 128, 30ff.
VF, rev. slightly off flan

The stylis was a staff for a sail on the stern of a galley. So it can't be the prow on the rev. although it is often seen in the description.

Unusual porrtait! According to Pat Lawrence the style of the nymph seems to be from the late Hellenistic time ('Hellenistic Rokoko"), never from the 4th century BC.

This issue commemorated the expulsion of the pro-Macedonian tyrant Philistides in 340 BC. The next issue of Histiaean coins probably took place after the Euboean towns declared themselves independent in BC 313, but it does not seem to have been of long duration.

Sometimes the scene beneath the biga is interpreted as fight of a gladiator against a lion, but sometimes related to Bituitus, king of the Averni, who unleashed a pack of huge dogs against the Romans in his battles.
