Lucius Verus Sestertius-mars~0.jpg
ROMAN EMPIRE, Lucius Verus SestertiusA nice setertius with Mars advancing on the reverse.
One interesting thing is that the reverse has not been cleaned to the same extent as the obverse.

ANTONINUS PIUS VICTORY.JPG
ROMAN EMPIRE, ANTONINUS PIUS. AR Denarius of Rome. Struck A.D.143. Obverse: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III. Laureate head of Antoninus Pius facing right.
Reverse: IMPERATOR II. Victory standing facing left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm branch in her left.
RIC III : 111b
Weight : 3.486gms. Ex FORVM.

This coin commemorates the Roman advance into Scotland which saw the beginning of construction of the Antonine Wall, running across the central belt from the Clyde Estuary in the west to the Forth Estuary in the east. Since Antoninus had already taken the title “Imperator” on his adoption by Hadrian, he was hailed Imperator for the second time after this victory in Britain which was possibly engineered simply in order to give the new emperor military prestige.

11599LG.jpg
ROMAN EMPIRE, Nero / Jupiter / DenariusAttribution: RIC 64 (RIC I)

Date Minted: 66-67 AD (Rome)

Obverse: IMP NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS - Laureate head of Nero facing right

Reverse: IVPPITER CVSTOS - Jupiter seated left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre

Weight: 2.84 grams

Size: 17.6mm

An excellent mature portrait of Nero with striking details and stylistically superior devices on a flan that is just a touch tight, but still full legends. The reverse, however, exhibits significantly more wear than the obverse, possibly from cabinet wear as it does appear that this coin has been out of the ground for an extended period. Lightly toned.

Haim Gitler suggests that the depiction is referring to the celebration of the Anthesteria, which occurs in spring and where the 3 years old children got a small vine jar. This seems to have been an initiation rite by which the children were admitted by the urban community.

This coin was issued by Vespasian during the first year of his reign to announce the beginning of a new dynasty. After the chaos of the Civil War, Rome badly needed stability and Vespasian would provide it.

This has become one of my favorite coins in my collection. The toning is superb and the fine style of the portraits are to die for.

Svoronos, who has described this coin first, interprets the child correct for sure as Ploutos. We have to see the goddes possibly as the same personification which is named EVPOCIA on coins of Hierapolis in Phrygia. It should be noted that the title EVPOCIARXHC occurs in our region, in Odessos and Tomis, too.
There is another similar type, AMNG 1866 (2 ex. in Paris and Mandl). Pick writes: It is possible, that the small Ploutos on these two coins was overlooked!
