This is one of only two Roman Provincial issues with a definitive lifetime portrait of Julius Caesar. This is the first of those two issued, having been struck around 47/46 BC, a full two or more years before his assassination. The other was issued from Lampsacus, Mysia, in 45 BC. The first appearance of Caesar’s portrait on a coin struck in Rome, the denarii of M. Mettius, did not occur until January 44 BC, only three months before he was assassinated.

This type was the second issue to definitively feature a lifetime portrait of Julius Caesar, the first being an issue from Bithynia minted ca. 47/6 BC (RPC I 2026). Both of these bronze issues precede the earliest appearance of his portrait on a coin minted at Rome, that being the denarii of M. Mettius issued in January 44 BC.

Otho's reign was so short-lived, that he struck no bronze coins at the mint in Rome, only silver denarii and gold aurei. Only the provincial mint at Antioch struck bronze coins in his name. And because of the shortness of his reign, the engravers in Antioch had no likeness of Otho on which to model their coins’ image. So they went with a more “classical” image which, as we now know, really had very little in common with his true likeness.
