Actually my only Nero Sestertius so far. I really like the portrait on this one. The legends on the reverse are a bit weakly, and double struck. Apart from that, a very nice coin in hand. I hope ther are more coins like this out there ...

To me the portrait on this coin is like a window to his personality and character. His gaze seems to mirror what is written about his life and the way he ruled.

Greek, Alexander the Great, Lysimachos tetradrachmMinted in Magnesia, this is one of the most beautiful portraits of Alexander the Great, a true Hellenistic masterpiece. SEST.TRAJ.COL.jpg
Roman, TrajanAn extremely rare type with an almost uncirculated portrait of Emperor Trajan. Trajan's Column was erected in Forum Traiani to commemorate roman victories over Dacia. Still remains intact, except for Trajan's statue and eagles at base that were lost. This sestertius was struck same year that column was erected.(DIVIF)1 commentsMar 09, 2005

Mature_Caracalla_Portrait_7x-1.jpg
Roman, Caracalla * Mature
Of all the Caracalla portraits, I’m most drawn to & fond of those which show him in his greatest maturity. This one, dated to 217 AD, the year of his death is about as ‘mature’ as one can get for the man.
This portrait strikes me as exceptionally handsome, which I well-imagine he was in reality, despite his ‘official portraiture’ which often suggests otherwise.

Too, I think some of his portraits, such as this one, suggest strongly a certain vanity in his masculine appearance – that he was well groomed and took considerable pride in his over-all appearance, quite despite his soldierly life-style.
Such vanity and the purposefulness of his official portraiture not withstanding, here I believe one beholds ‘Caracalla’ the man more as he was – an alpha male par excellence, and a devilishly handsome one.

Portrait from AR Denarius * Caracalla * Serapis
Mint: Rome
Struck: 217 AD.
Size: 19 mm.

RIC 291b
* Reverse of * RIC 289, pg. 255

GordianIII-master portrait.jpg
Roman, Gordian III - 238-244 ADMARCVS ANTONIVS GORDIANVS was born in 225. His grandfather was Gordian I and his uncle was Gordian II. After their failed revolt in 238, Gordian was raised (April, 238) to Caesar under the Senate's co-Augusti, Balbinus and Pupienus. When they were killed in July, 238, Gordian became sole Augustus. His rule was generally thought to be mild and wise, guided by his Praetorian Praefect, Timesitheus. Gordian III married Timesitheus's daughter Tranquillina in 241. Unfortunately, both Timesitheus and Gordian died on campaign against the Sassanians in 243-244. His mysterious death on February 25, 244 possibly was plotted by his successor, Philip I.

Vespasian r103-o.jpg
Roman, VespasianI love this portrait! The sneer/scowl seems so real!

TITVS FLAVIVS VESPASIANVS, born in 9 AD to Vespasia Polla and Flavius Sabinus, entered public service and was serving as Governor of Judaea in 68 when Nero committed suicide. The eastern legions resented the quick succession of Nero, Galba, Otho, and Vitellius, since the Rhine legions had caused it all. In July of 69 the eastern legions proclaimed Vespasian, and the legions of Illyricum followed. Vitellius was killed on December 20, 69 and Vespasian reigned mildly for the next ten years. He died of illness on June 23, 79, was succeeded by his older son Titus, and was deified by the Senate.

Pupienus portrait - RIC 10(a).jpg
Roman, Pupienus, April - June 238 A.D.MARCVS CLODIVS PUPIENVS MAXIMVS was born about 164. He was a Senator in 238 when the revolt of the Gordians broke out against Maximinus I, and he was one of the Senate's "Committee of Twenty" to oversee the defense of Italy in support of the Gordians. When the Gordians were quickly killed in Africa, the Senate made Pupienus and a Senator named Balbinus co-Augusti. Pupienus was to lead the army and Balbinus was to administrate. Maximinus was soon killed by his own men at Aquileia but discontent in Rome led to the murder of Pupienus by the Praetorian Guard on July 29, 238. This portrait is from a Antonianus (ex-Forum) in my collection (see jimwho523's gallery for actual coin)13 commentsjimwho523Jul 08, 2004
