RPC2243sm.jpg
RPC 2243 Vespasian [Agrippa II]Æ30, 16.75g
Caesarea Paneas, 73-74 AD
Obv: ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ ΟΥΕϹΠΑϹΙ ΚΑΙϹΑΡΙ ϹΒΑΣΤΩ (sic); Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: ΕΤ ΔΙ - ΒΑ / ΑΓΡΙ-ΠΠΑ; Tyche with calathos standing, l., holding cornucopia and two corn-ears
RPC 2243 (4 spec.). Hendin 1301.
Acquired from David Hendin, eBay, June 2020. Ex Goldberg 110, 4-5 June 2019, lot 1776 (part). Ex Shlomo Moussaieff Collection.

Agrippa II sporadically struck coinage for the Flavian dynasty throughout his long reign. The coins circulated within his kingdom (Northern Palestine) and were likely coined at Caesaera Panesa, although the mint is not certain (Hendin places it at Caesarea Maritima). Confusingly, Agrippa's mint(s) employed two different dating eras for his coinage - one starting in 56 and the second in 60 or 61. This large bronze struck in the name of Vespasian is dated regnal year 14 by the second era and was produced in either 73 or 74 AD. RPC suggests this issue could possibly commemorate the Roman victory at Masada which occurred around the same time. But taking into account Agrippa's high profile role during the Jewish war the coins could simply be a by-product of his fidelity to the Flavian regime.

Wonderful portrait with hints of desert patina.

Vlasto plate coin, #1296
D'Andrea Diobols plate coin, Series E, Type 83

"Mr. Vlasto's collection of Tarentine coins is certainly the most complete that exists; practically all known varieties are represented; its catalog can therefore be considered a real corpus of the coinage of Tarentum. Numerous are the rare or unique specimens; but what makes this collection an outstanding one is its large number of exceptionally well preserved coins. Mr. Vlasto was never content with his specimens; if he could get a better one, he never missed the opportunity. He used to tell me that in some cases he had changed six specimens of the same coin and that he would even change the sixth if he could find a better one. The result is that many of his coins are really wonderful gems of priceless value. Any collector would be proud to have just one of them in his collection."

Orissian_Leaf_002.jpg
Orissian Palm Leaf Manuscript illustrating the MahabharataThe Mahabharat, Book 6: Bhishma Parva; Canto 120-122

This illustrates the death of Bhishma. He felled in battle by a reluctant, ashamed and tearful Arjuna pierced by innumerable arrows. As Bhishma fell, his whole body was held above the ground by the shafts of Arjuna's arrows which protruded from his back, and through his arms and legs. He asked Arjuna to give him a pillow fit for a warrior. Arjuna then removed three arrows from his quiver and placed them underneath Bhishma's head, pointed side upwards. To quench the war veteran's thirst, Arjuna shot an arrow into the earth, and a jet stream of water rose up and into Bhishma's mouth.

HCV-USA00-1783-NovaConstellatio.jpg
USA, Nova Constellatio copper, 1783The rectangular holes in some colonial-era coppers were often caused by the old "square" cut nails. This looks to have been more neatly cut than that. Some early coppers and large cents were affixed to beams or rafters in newly constructed buildings, but I guess this could have been put to other purposes as well.1 commentslordmarcovan04/25/14 at 22:42rennrad12020: cool

An historically obscure city in southern Campania, Hyria may have been located approximately 25 miles east of Mt. Vesuvius. It's site was likely an old Samnite settlement, and in fact the ethnic on the reverse of these didrachms is often inscribed in Oscan.
However Imhoof-Blumer believed that these coins, along with those of neighboring Nola, may actually have been struck at Neapolis. This is suggested by die comparisons, and the man-headed bull device seemingly adds weight to the argument.

Statement with regards to rarity by Curtis Clay; from this discussion thread: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=71328.msg447039#msg447039

"In this case, they [ Hristova/Jekov] can only show two specimens, from the same die pair (Steve's example too is from the same dies), and no varieties; the type was not known to AMNG in 1898; more generally, coins of Septimius at Nicopolis under Ulpianus as governor are rather rare, suggesting that Septimius may have died and so been dropped from the coinage fairly early in the issue. So all in all, apparently a rare type in a scarce issue, perhaps struck from only one reverse die." brackets added

This is the Wildwinds example

Ptolemy Soter, wanting to integrate Egyptian religion with that of their Hellenic rulers, by promoted worship of Serapis as a deity that would win the reverence of both groups alike. This was despite the curses of the Egyptian priests against the gods of previous foreign rulers (i.e Set who was lauded by the Hyksos). Alexander the Great had attempted to use Amun for this purpose, but Amum was more prominent in Upper Egypt, and not as popular in Lower Egypt, where the Greeks had stronger influence. The Greeks had little respect for animal-headed figures, and so an anthropomorphic statue was chosen as the idol, and proclaimed as the equivalent of the highly popular Apis. It was named Aser-hapi (i.e. Osiris-Apis), which became Serapis, and was said to be Osiris in full, rather than just his Ka (life force). Ptolemy's efforts were successful - in time Serapis was held by the Egyptians in the highest reverence above all other deities, and he was adored in Athens and other Greek cities.

Coins of Ulpianus for Severus are rare, in contrast to coins for Caracalla or Geta. This type was known only for Geta. Because types often were struck parallel for all three emperors it is possible that this type could be found for Caracalla too! The obv. combination of legend AVT L CEPTI and this bust type draped and cuirassed is not known.

The object in the r. hand of the emperor is not clear at all. Sometimes it is called a sword. I think a small Nike is the most probable.

Acquired from Roma Numismatics, December 2009.

The triumph of Rome over Judaea continues with this reverse; here Titus is depicted in the triumphal quadriga he rode in the celebrations at Rome the year or two before. A relatively common coin that shares the same reverse type with Vespasian.

A bit rough, but nowhere near as bad as the picture indicates. Actually, a very nice coin in hand. It is hard to find these as well centred as this specimen. Shares the same obv. die as BMC 518 and the RIC plate coin for 1563 (Paris).

RIC 0371 Titus as Caesar [Vespasian]AR Denarius, 3.20g
Rome Mint, 72-73AD
Obv: T CAES IMP VESP PON TR POT; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: No Legend; Titus stg. r. with branch and sceptre, in quadriga r.
RIC 371 (R2). BMC p.15. RSC 394. BNC -. Hendin 1483.
Ex Harry N. Sneh Collection.

Part of an issue that celebrates the Jewish War victory showing Titus in a Triumphal quadriga, much as he would've appeared during the joint Triumph he held with his father Vespasian in 71 AD. The type was issued both in Rome and more commonly in Antioch.

I have searched for a Rome mint issue of the type for many years and had no luck. Recently Harry Sneh offered this example to me, naturally, I couldn't resist. The coin is worn but most of the major devices are intact and the portrait is a wonderful example of the young Prince.
