Single handle joining the neck and body. Ex Professor George N. Olcott, Columbia University, 189901912 (Olcott collection no. S 1672 and T-13); purchased from estate of Prof. Olcott, through his widow Zita Olcott, by Toledo Museum of Art in 1912, Accession no. 1912.1237. H. 7 5/8" (19.4 cm)..

Bamiyan? mint according to Tye

O: Horseman right, holding standard. Sri Hamirah ("Amir") around

R: Bull standing left, partial Sri Mahamada Sama in Nagari

Ref: Tye 164

Notes: High quality silver coin from the famous Muslim Ghorid conqueror of Delhi - the silver is debased, but excellent quality metal, rare this nice. That note is from the dealer. I would add that I really like the “Indian” bull and horseman jitals. This one feels and looks really nice in-hand. Bamiyan is west of Kabul and south of Balkh. I did a tour in Afghanistan, mostly in Ghazni province.

BCC_MA46_Nemesis_Bronze_Composite.jpg
BCC MA46 Nemesis Bronze FigurineBronze Figurine of Nemesis
Roman 1st-early 3rd Century CE
Solid cast bronze statuette of Nemesis,
wearing stephane and long chiton?, right
hand clasped to drapery at neck, head
facing downward, both arms bare. In her
left hand she cradles the cubit measure.
There are no obvious seam lines. The
bottom footing is flat, allowing the figure
to stand alone. A similar representation of
Nemesis may be found on provincial coins of
Julia Domna, 194-217 CE, minted in the nearby
Roman colony of Aelia Capitolina (Meshorer 83).
Matsson's Gods, Goddesses and Heroes notes
that the original sense of Nemesis was not so
much revenge as the "distributor of fortune -
it might be either good or bad fortune" and
that she "apportioned to each man according
to his deserts."

R: Diademed head left; [date in exergue].

Ref: van't Haaff Type 9.1.2-6A; Alram 464; Sunrise 483.

Notes: Toned, porosity. Near VF. Regarding the van't Haaff attribution, I believe it is certainly Type 9.1.2, I am not so sure it is 6A because the beard is not as long on my coin. Plus, the mintmark is off flan or obscured. For now, I am going with CNG's attribution for lack of a better one from my perusal of van't Haaff.

Notes: Another reference is from the new book by Waleed Ziad, In the Treasure Room of the Sakra King: Votive Coinage From Gandharan Shrines. This coin would be Zaid 1.1.1 (not sure how to reference this book). Another interesting thing about the bust on the obverse is the depiction of cranial deformation, a characteristic feature of the Alkhan period.

Good Very Fine.

Weapon - Spear Head - 2nd century AD - Germanic / MarcomannicGermanic iron spearhead.

This iron spear head has the rounded leaf form and high central ridge of a Germanic piece was found in Slovakia.

Dating is uncertain. It likely dates to the 1st or 2nd century AD.
It may have been a Marcomanni weapon.

It is 32 cm long (almost 13"), 5.2 cm at its widest, and has a shaft that held a 21 mm diameter wooden haft.
It had some of its edging restored (nicks were filled in with a black epoxy) by a previous owner, reportedly in the mid-20th century.

Macedonian Kingdom, Demetrius I Poliorketes, 306 - 283 B.C., SilverdrachmThe bull's horns suggest Demetrius' relationship to Poseidon is the same as Alexander's to Zeus Ammon. The portrait is individualized, but evokes the image of Alexander. Demetrios was the first to assimilate elements of Alexander's deified portrait and the first living ruler to portray himself as a god on coins.

Thrace, Pantikapaion, Tauric Chersonesos, 2nd - 1st Century B.CPan is the Greek god of shepherds and flocks, fields, groves, mountain wilderness, and wooded glens, hunting, rustic music, theatrical criticism, and companion of the nymphs. He is connected to fertility and the season of spring. He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat and is usually represented in the form of a satyr, with a cloak of goat's skin, playing the Syrinx, or flute of seven pipes, and holding the pedum or pastoral staff.

According to van't Haaf, the varieties with a hair tuft are "always" accompanied by a dot or star in crescent above and an anchor to the right, although these symbols are often struck off the flan. This is an unrecorded variety in which the anchor is to the left.

AthensOwl.jpg
Athens, Greece, Pi-Style III Tetradrachm, 353 - c. 340 B.CSilver tetradrachm, 17.1g, Athens mint, oval flan, typical of the type.
O: Head of Athena right with eye seen in true profile, wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive leaves and pi-style floral scroll, pellet in ear.
R: Owl standing right, head facing, to right AΘE in large lettering, to left olive sprig and crescent, pellet over eyes.
- Kroll Pi-Style p. 244, fig. 8; Flament p. 126, 3; SNG Cop 63; SNG Munchen 96; SNG Delepierre 1479; Svoronos Athens pl. 20: 2

Unlike the customary flans of 5th and earlier 4th century Athenian tetradrachms that have solid, rounded edges from having been cast in a mold, these were struck on thick planchets made of flattened, folded-over, older tetradrachms. The flattened coins were not just folded in two but were folded over a second time to produce a planchet of three or four layers

There are three distinct features of this type of Athens Owl coinage. 1st, they have flans that are commonly misshapen. A number of them are so distorted that numismatists and collectors in Greece have long referred to them as “logs” (koutsoura); these are the tetradrachms in the form of long, stretched ovals with one or two nearly straight sides. 2nd, since the flans, of whatever shape, were ordinarily too small for the full relief designs of the dies, relatively few pi-style coins were minted with their entire obverse and/or reverse type showing. 3rd, just as the diameters and surface areas of the pi flans are generally smaller than those of Athenian tetradrachms of the 5th century and of the first half of the 4th century, they tend also to be exceptionally thick.

The name Pi-style refers to the floral helmet ornament on the obverse which resembles the Greek letter pi (P) bisected by a long central tendril.

Elymais. Arsacid dynasty. Probably a contemporary regional counterfeit struck during the reign of Prince A (late 2nd to early 3rd centuries A.D.), or later.van't Haaff --; De Morgan --; BMC --; Sear GICV --; Alram --

AE unit (denomination undetermined), 2.51 g., 12.59 mm. max., 0°

Obv.: Bust facing left, side whiskers as double row of dots.

Rev.: Plain diadem of two bands with fine lines, pellet border.

The obverse bust most closely resembles Prince A (late 2nd to early 3rd centuries A.D.), van't Haaff 19.1.1-1A, whereas the reverse mirrors Phraates (early-mid 2nd century A.D.), van't Haaff 14.4.1-2). Due to the decades between these rulers, the coin is probably not a mule. The coins of Phraates may have remained in circulation during the reign of Prince A, and beyond. The coin is probably a contemporary regional counterfeit inspired by the Phraates reverse. However, the diadem on the reverse is a reference to sky god Bel, and the possibility that the coin is an unrecorded official coin, issued by Prince A with the revived iconography of Phraates, cannot be excluded.

AE drachm, 1.30 g., 11.55 mm. max., 0°

Obv: Bust facing left, wearing diadem of two bands, row of dots above, side whiskers of one row of dots, hair tuft at back of head; pellet border.

Rev: Artemis standing right, holding bow in one hand, plucking arrow from her quiver with the other hand; single dot to her right; pellet border.

According to van't Haaf, the varieties with a hair tuft are "always" accompanied by a dot or star in crescent above and an anchor to the right, although these symbols are often struck off the flan. These symbols are not present on this coin. Tracing the probable arc of the pellet border, there does not appear to be space in the off-flan fields to accommodate these symbols, or, for that matter, to accommodate a chin/beard.

Vespasian ruled Rome for 10 years, and he was the last emperor in the year of the four emperors. His rule brought stability to the empire. He was famous for his military response to the Jewish revolt, and for the construction of the Flavian amphitheater. The looting of Jerusalem provided the funding for this building project. The colosseum was completed by his son Titus who became emperor after the death of Vespasian. The Flavian era had three emperors, Vespasian, his son Titus and his other son Domitian.

While this coin is worn, please take note of the bare head of Vespasian. There are only 2 known coin types that feature Vespasian with a bare head, all others are laureate. For one coin type there are several examples known to exist. For the coin type displayed below, this coin was, until very recently the only one to have surfaced. A second example has now been found by an expert on Flavian coinage. The reference Roman Imperial Coinage II Part 1 refers to my coin but does not have a photo of the coin. I sent a photo to the co-author of the volume, and I hope that a photo will be added when this edition is updated.
