Hadrian Libertas DenariusHADRIAN (117-138). Denarius. Rome.
O: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, Laureate bust right, with slight drapery.
R: COS III, Libertas standing left, holding pileus and sceptre.
- RIC 175.
The pileus liberatis was a soft felt cap worn by liberated slaves of Troy and Asia Minor. In late Republican Rome, the pileus was symbolically given to slaves upon manumission, granting them not only their personal liberty, but also freedom as citizens with the right to vote (if male). Following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C., Brutus and his co-conspirators used the pileus to signify the end of Caesar's dictatorship and a return to a Republican system of government. The pileus was adopted as a popular symbol of freedom during the French Revolution and was also depicted on some early U.S. coins. - FACNemonater02/21/17 at 08:55Bartosz A: Great denarius!

Ex-Forum
The following notes were provided by Forum in their catalog description.
"Struck on a briefly used standard of 21-attic obols. Broad flan. Overstruck over an Alexander tetradrachm, which had a banker's mark. Undertype visible at 4:00 on obverse. Minor chip. Rare overstrike!"
Many thanks to mihali84 for spotting the signature on the coin. The coin has the signature of the Delta artist behind the ear (between the ear and the first curl near the neck). I was not aware of this wonderful detail and it wasn't mentioned by Forum in their description either. This artist was a master craftsman and was responsible for some coins of high artistry at Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I (possibly into the early reign of Ptolemy II) and produced from quite early in the reign, including one of the iconic elephant's skin headdress tetradrachm.maridvnvm09/02/09 at 14:21Bartosz A: A great coin!

Obv: T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.

Ex CNG E167, 27 June 2007, lot 139. Ex C. G. collection. Ex Stack's, 8 December 1988, lot 2197.
Struck in 79 during Vespasian's last denarius issue. The quadriga with corn-ears reverse possibly symbolises the importance of Alexandria as the granary of Rome and echoes an early reverse struck for Augustus (BMCRE II, p. xlii). Also of note, this issue is a break from earlier ones where Titus shared reverse types with Vespasian. This reverse along with the others minted for Titus Caesar in 79 were not shared with Vespasian.
