Domitian achieved tribunician power for the 16th time on 14 September 96 AD. He was assassinated in a palace plot four days later on 18 September. In between those two dates the mint struck only one issue of denarii recording Domitian as TR P XVI, needless to say they are extremely rare! The Senate decreed Damnatio Memoriae within a day of Domitian's assassination which would have quickly halted production at the mint for his coinage. The months leading up to Domitian's assassination saw the mint at Rome experimenting with many new reverse designs (altar, winged Minerva, Maia, temple reverses), breaking the monotony of the four standard Minerva types that had previously dominated the denarius. These new types are exceedingly rare and were perhaps experimental in nature. This denarius shows one of these new reverse types, Minerva Victrix, a more warrior like attribute of the goddess. The fact that this new type which originally appeared on the denarius when Domitian was TR P XV carried over to the briefly struck TR P XVI issue alongside the Maia and the M1, M3, and M4 Minerva types may hint that there was indeed change in the air at the mint. Perhaps the mix of new types with the older ones hint at a transition regarding the typology on his precious metal coinage? Regardless, the experiment was cut short by an assassin's blade, so we shall never know. This denarius may very well be the last coin ever struck for Domitian.
Fine late style with good natural toning. Same dies as the BM specimen.

This is the exact coin that is described (but not pictured) in the footnote to RIC 231 (vol. IV, part III, p. 39):
"231. A strange Antoninianus (G. B. Pears Coll.) shows rev. type of AEQVIT[AS] apparently overstruck with type of LIBER[TAS] -- obv. of Gordian III, rev. of Philip overstruck with rev. of Trebonianus Gallus (?)."
There is a plaster cast of this coin in the British Museum. This cast is illustrated in Roger Bland's "unpublished" thesis on the coinage of Gordian III from Antioch: plate 10 18/21.

The numismatic firm of Bourgey of Paris was founded by the famed dealer, Etienne Bourgey in 1895. After the war, his son Emile Bourgey took over as director, and in 1993 the third generation came forward with Sabine Bourgey. Le Cabinet Bourgey Numismatique still operates from No.7 Rue Drouot, Paris, to this day.
The most noteworthy event of the reign of Marcus Julius Philippus "The Arab", was the celebration in 248 AD of the millennium anniversary of the foundation of Rome, one thousand years on from the legendary foundation date of 753 BC, held in conjunction with the Saecular Games. Lavish games and other spectacles were staged for the amusement of the Roman populace and an extensive series of coins was issued to commemorate the occasion. Ironically, the year 248 was extremely unsettled, with four separate rebellions braking out within the ranks of the army. However, none of them could lure Philip from the capital, where he initiated prolonged celebrations. The festivities would not last though; Philip was defeated by Decius at the Battle of Verona the following year, where he and his eleven year old son were killed.

The epithet 'Olympios' was adopted by Hadrian in 128/9 following the dedication of the temple of Zeus Olympios in Athens. It emphasized the emperor's Panhellenic program and enthusiastic Philhellenism, for Zeus Olympios, chief god of the Greek peoples, was the Panhellenic god before all others.
