Southern Maya polychrome painted bowlSouthern Maya polychrome painted bowl (Copador*), El Salvador, classic period (AD 250-900).
The outside of the bowl is decorated with a row of ten right seated figures making offerings. These figures may represent one of the Maya hero twins (Hunahpú) which, in the classic period, was believed to be reborne as the Maize God.
The inside of the bowl has in the center a pattern of two double-crossing angled bands within a circle (the earth?) with, outside the circle, seven left standing bird-like animals carrying double-bodied fruits in their beaks.
Height: 10cm; Diameter: 23cm
Photo upper left: condition of the bowl as it was found. Scanned from an old slide and accidentally in mirror image;
Middel left: repaired bowl viewed from outer side;
Right: Inside view of the bowl;
Below: Rollout photo of the outer side.
(*) The term "Copador" is a contraction of Copán (Honduras) and El Salvador, because ceramics of this same style are found in these regions dating from the classic period.Charles S02/01/15 at 22:17SpongeBob: A++++ I really like this as well
