Gordian III Bronze Military Diploma 241/242 CE Highlighted ScriptThe two faces, A and B, are duplicate copies of the first half of a diploma of Gordian III addressed to veterans of the ten Praetorian Cohorts, cohortibus praetoris Gordianis decem (numerals 1 – 10) piis vindicibus, granting them Roman right of marriage (conubium) with their wives even if of non-Roman status (peregrinae), provided they are their first and only wife. The evidence of date is contained in the third line of Face B (the equivalent text is lost from A), which describes Gordian as TRIB POT V COS II. This is the year which ran from 10 December 241 to 9 December 242.

ANCIENT FORGERY -Dilver - Caracalla - NobilitasBearded Caracalla looking - apparently - clearly not ancient.
Obverse legend (probably intended as): ANTONINIVSPIVSAVG
Reverse legend (most likely): NOBILITAS
Reverse (again, probably): Nobilitas standing right, holding scepter and palladium, shield to right
(as per Aorta)

Above reflects the best, most likely attribution that I had but it did seem odd that the only attribution that I could come up with was for a 'Quinarius' as it's about the same size as my not-a-quinarius Elagabalus silver coin. I posted it in good faith thinking I'd done a good job to ID it given its condition. Below you can read the comments from other Forum members who told me it was most likely an ancient forgery.

It looks like that rather than go with a recognised, common coin that would stand out against the real thing, the forgers took a chance with a design known to be on the quinarius, but not on the denari. I suppose that they figured that folks would just assume that the mint was making denari with the same features as the quinarius (beared Caracalla, NOBILITAS etc) and not ask too many questions. OR, NOBILITAS was just the shortest reverse legend and the easiest picture to replicate. Why knows? A relic of the otherwise unpublished seedy underbelly of Rome... I like it. Hope you do to.

Mysia. Kings of Pergamon. Eumenes I AR Tetradrachm.Struck circa 263-255/50 BC (30mm, 17.02g, 2h). Westermark Group III, obv. die V.XXIV; SNG France 1606-9; SNG von Aulock 1355 (same obverse die); SNG Copenhagen 334. Obverse: Head of Philetairos right, wearing laurel wreath bound with a broad ribbon with wide hemmed borders. Reverse: ΦIΛETAIPOY in right field, Athena enthroned left, right hand resting on shield set at her feet, left elbow resting on small sphinx seated right; transverse spear in background, ivy leaf above knee, monogram on throne, bow to right. EF, toned. High relief portrait.

Ex CNG: Classical Numismatic Review XXXIX.1 Spring 2014 lot 929022.

The coinage of Pergamon under Eumenes I crystalized the design of the kingdom’s tetradrachmai for almost 100 years. It features on the obverse a realistic portrait of the eunuch Philetairos, who was initially a treasurer for the diadoch Lysimachos. He entrusted to the eunuch 6000 talents of silver (and gold) for safekeeping in Sardis. However, Philetairos switched allegiance to Seleukos shortly before the Battle of Korupedion in 281 BC, when Seleukos defeated Lysimachos. Seleukos, in turn, was assassinated roughly a year later. The newly created kingdom enjoyed autonomy from the Seleukids and the fortress city of Pergamon was built with Philetairos as its “king”, although he was never publicly crowned as such. Philetairos coined at least three different types of tetradrachmai, which were influenced by his allegiance to different rulers. First, he minted Lysimachos-type coins for his master Lysimachos. After the latter’s defeat and death he next minted coins of the Alexander-type either with the legend Alexandrou or Seleukou. Lastly, in a show of self-assurance and independence, he minted coins with the obverse portrait of Seleukos and the reverse directly copied from the earlier Lysimachos-type coin with Athena seated. However, the similarity ends there: instead of putting a dominating diadoch’s name, he boldly put his name on the coins. After his death, the administration passed on to his adopted nephew Eumenes I. The new ruler was able to liberate his realm from the dominion of the Seleukids when he revolted, at the instigation of Ptolemy II of Egypt, and rather unexpectedly, defeated Antiochos I in Sardis in 261 BC. He greatly expanded his territory and founded several cities. His coinage initiated a type which showed a highly realistic and unflattering portrait of his predecessor Philetairos and showed him as diademed, heavy-set and ostensibly obese whose face dominates the whole space of the obverse of the coin. At this point, there is no need of legitimizing current rulers by reference to Alexander. They could either put their own portraits or the likeness of the founder of a dynasty which they belong. This would eventually become the norm for most coins of third century BC Hellenistic kingdoms. The design on Eumenes’ coins would remain unchanged for the next century and would be adopted by succeeding rulers Attalos I ((241-197 BC) and Eumenes II (197-160 BC). It was estimated that it required 200 obverse dies to mint the coins during those span of time of its existence. As for any long-lived (and much copied) designs of any ancient coin (i.e. coins of Phillip II, Alexander III and Lysimachos), the various Philetairou-type coins could be assigned to a particular ruler according to symbols and monograms and level of artistry.

The Roman bestiarii were arena fighters who fought against animals while wielding the spear and net. While professional schools for this role eventually developed, most animal fighters were condemned prisoners who barely survived a single match. They should be distinguished from the traditional gladiatiores, who fought only other men. It was in the role of bestiarius that Commodus won his arena fame and Herculean title.

RIC 8 Ancient counterfeitA plated Ancient counterfeit. The portrait is atypical and the obverse legend is strangely placed: the word "CAESAR" ends more to the left with respect to the portrait than in any known official die (n = 520), even though there clearly is the letter "M" as well. The drapery falling from the hand holding the caducaeus on the reverse is simplified and incorrectly executed as well.

Historical background;

Hieron II was tyrant and then king of Syracuse, c. 270 to 215 B.C. His rule brought 50 years of peace and prosperity, and Syracuse became one of the most renowned capitols of antiquity. He enlarged the theater and built an immense altar. The literary figure Theocritus and the philosipher Archimedes lived under his rule. After struggling against the Mamertini, he eventually allied with Rome.

The last N looks like an inverted P. This same shape we have found already on a small coin with crescent and star.

Pick: Because the figure is cuirassed it seems to be the depiction of the emperor himself as Helios; Sestini refers this type to the introduction of the cult of the god Elagabalus in Rome in AD 219.
