Mis-strike Soli of Constantine IThe obverse of this coin is error free, though has a weak strike in the legend a 3h. However the reverse suffers from a very odd 180 degree flipped double strike. It is R F / RA issue struck at the 4th (quarta) officina of Rome. It is RIC-VII-Rome-2 struck AD 313. All officinae except P are rated scarce (P is rated C1).1 commentsSC03/31/15 at 13:42Matthew C5: almost creepy reverse, love it

"Obol" As of Marcus AureliusThis as of Marcus Aurleius with reverse of Providentia holding wand over globe has a layer of thick blue crystals on both sides. Many believe that this kind of patina comes from contact with the dead and such coins are therefore know as "obol" coins from the practice of placing payment for the afterlife in the deceased's mouth. It is not certain if there is any truth to these rumours. When coins, like this one, come from ploughed field contexts it is impossible to determine what their original deposition context was. 2 commentsSC03/31/15 at 13:19Matthew C5: Incredible story if true! Belt Plates - 2nd century AD - Openwork filigreeRoman open-work, or opus interassile, style belt plaques.

The small plate on the left served as a hanger - a pouch or knife was attached to the loop.
The larger plate on the right was a standard decorative plate.

Both date to the mid-2nd to early 3rd century AD.

Pupienus portrait - RIC 10(a).jpg
Roman, Pupienus, April - June 238 A.D.MARCVS CLODIVS PUPIENVS MAXIMVS was born about 164. He was a Senator in 238 when the revolt of the Gordians broke out against Maximinus I, and he was one of the Senate's "Committee of Twenty" to oversee the defense of Italy in support of the Gordians. When the Gordians were quickly killed in Africa, the Senate made Pupienus and a Senator named Balbinus co-Augusti. Pupienus was to lead the army and Balbinus was to administrate. Maximinus was soon killed by his own men at Aquileia but discontent in Rome led to the murder of Pupienus by the Praetorian Guard on July 29, 238. 2nd century AD

A Roman Signifer (standard bearer) was also the cohorts banker. He kept records of what the soldiers deposited with him for safe keeping and he had the key to the strong box. Not only did the soldiers protect the Signifer to prevent the standard from being captured (which would be a disgrace) but also so that they could get their money back!

There is no way to know if this was an actual Signifer key as many other professions would have items locked away.

The metropolis of Bithynia was in fact Nicomedia but Nicaea raises a claim upon that title as is shown by a coin issued under Domitian with the legend "the Nikaians, the first of the eparchias". From this claim emerged a legal dispute which finally was decided by Valens in that way, that Nicaea and Nicomedia both was allowed to call themselve the first city of Bithynia but that only Nicomedia was the metropolis. But this vain title was useless: By the new arrangement of the provinces Chalcedon became the metropolis of the anterior Pontus. It's known a discourse from Dion of Prusa - who lived in the time of Domitian - in which he challenged the Nicomedians to peace with the Nicaeans.

TRIPTOLEMOS, son of Keleos of Eleusis, is said to get wheat from Demeter with the order to spread the cultivation of grain over the world. So he is one of the great founders of civilization. In his snake biga he came to Thracia, where he was killed by Lynkos, who then was transformed into a lynx. (Ovid Metam. V, 642-661)

PERINTHOS was called HERACLEA (THRACICA) after the time of Aurelian.

The Herakles Farnese was a marble copy of a Hellenistic work of Lysipp c.330 BC made by Glykon of Athens AD 211-217. It was found 1540 in the Caracalla Thermes in Rome and then located in the Farnese gardens. The rev. of the coin probably shows a copy standing in the gardens or parks of Pautalia which was a famous bath.

Labrys = Pelekos, sign of Tenedos. Because in later times the axe has been accompanied by a grape bunch it could has been an attribute or cult object of a Dionysos cult, who was worshipped as Dionysos Pelekos, like in Phera/Thessaly (HN).
Another interpretation of the janiform head is Philomene and Tenes, the eponym of Tenedos.
Tenedos has played an important role in the Trojan War, especially for the capture.
