about VF, even brown patina, slightly rough

At Sidon, massive mounds (hundreds of yards long and several yards deep) of Murex trunculus were found. The shells were broken in the spot that gives access to the glands from which the dyestuff is obtained. At some distance, a separate and distinct massive mound of Murex brandaris and Thais haemostoma was found. Since a reddish-purple dye is most readily obtainable from the Murex brandaris and Thais haemostoma as opposed to the bluish-purple obtained from the Murex trunculus, Egyptologist A. Dedekind (1898) viewed this fact as undeniable proof that Murex trunculus was the snail used exclusively for tekhelet (blue), and the others for argaman (purple) (c) A. Navon .(from Den of Antiquity)

Rev: VP KVNTILIANOV MARKIANOPOLITWN, Nemesis standing left, holding scales and short torch (arshin), wheel at side. E in field
Minted in MARKIANOPOLIS (Moesia Inferior).

The following information comes courtesy of Patricia Lawrence:-

“...I can't just cite Pick. When she holds the scales as well as the goad and has the wheel, it is fair to call her Nemesis-Aequitas. But yours is a plain, straightforward Nemesis. No holding of the cloth of her dress, no griffin by her wheel (Pick 676), which I'd call fancy Nemesis, and no scales of Aequitas (Dikaiosyne) in outstretched right hand (Pick 677). Nor did I identify it in Varbanov's list. If he'd seen it in a regional collection or in a recent auction catalogue, it would be there......just cite "cf. AMNG I, 1, no. 677 (which also has scales)".”

Furia Sabinia Tranquillina was the wife of Gordian III. She survived her murdered husband, but her subsequent lot in life and the period of her death remain equally without record.
This coin from Deultum presents the only affordable way for a collector to obtain a coin of Tranquillina with Latin legends, without needing to spend a fortune for an antoninianus.

This type seems to depict a triumphal arch erected in Marcianopolis. For the 4 figures on top will be no other interpretation possible than that suggested by A.v.Sallet (Cat. Berlin 58, 11) of the Imperial family...So we have in te middle Severus and Domna, on the l. side Caracalla and on the r. side a bit smaller Geta. The triumphal arch seems to be erected under Severus but appears not until Caracalla's sole reign, probably at the beginning because Geta is depicted too (Pick).

The Mount Argaios (Lat. Mons Argaeus) was the highest mountain in Asia Minor. Today it is Erciyes Dagi, 3916m and volcanic. This mountain was sacred since the time of the Hittits. Agalma is an item for decoration, a word, a sentence, but then too a cult statue, or a votive gift for the gods, then an idole.

ASTARTE, a major Northwest-Semitic goddess, was cognate with the East-Semitic goddess Ishtar. She was connected with fertility, sexuality and war. She was accepted by the Greeks under the name of Aphrodite. Cyprus, one of Aphrodite's main cult centers supplied the name Cypris as Aphrodite's most common byname.

BYBLOS , one of her important cult centers and therefore called 'the Holy Byblos', in ancient times was the most important port of export for Egyptian papyros to Greece. Therefore Greek biblos = book, and The Holy Bible!
