The very talented and ambitious Agrippa held high state positions at a young age. In his lightning career, he won important victories at the age of 27 as fleet chief for his closest friend Augustus. In the year 21 B.C. He married Julia, daughter of Augustus, who then declared him his co-regent and successor. Through his designated buildings - e.g. B. water pipes and thermal baths - Agrippa contributed significantly to the infrastructure of ancient Rome. The Pantheon in Rome is still admired today. A beautifully toned denarius in hand. Often times this coin is mistaken for the common Pax reverse (as was this one). The difference is in the position of the deities head resting on her arm. The pose is most likely taken from a cult statue of the goddess. Jay GT401/18/24 at 17:26ancientdave: Great find!

RPC 2216 Domitian Æ18, 4.96g
Ascalon (Judaea) mint, 94-95 AD
Obv: ϹΕΒΑϹ; Head of Domitian, laureate, r.
Rev: ΑϹ, ΗϘΡ; War-god Phanebal standing, l., holding harpa in r. hand and small round shield and long palm branch in l. hand
RPC 2216 (17 spec.).
Acquired from Forvm Ancient Coins, May 2023. Ex CNG E510, 23 February 2022, lot 576. Ex Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection.
In the years following the devastating Jewish revolt the pro-Roman harbour city of Ascalon produced a series of bronze coins under the Flavians. The coins copy types previously struck under Augustus and Nero. This small denomination bronze struck for Domitian during Ascalon civic year 198 (94-95 AD) depicts Phanebal, the ethnic war-god of Ascalon, a fusion of the Phoenician deities Ba'al and Tanit. He is shown holding a harpa (a sickle like curved sword), palm frond, and shield - all of which are his attributes.David Atherton01/18/24 at 01:08Ken W2: Interesting coin with great modern provenance.

Rome Mint, 73 AD
Obv: T CAES IMP VESP CENS; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: S P Q R in oak wreath
RIC 519 (R). BMC 119. RSC 264a. BNC -.
Ex Concordia Auction 9, 15 October 2023, lot 406.
Vespasian and Titus Caesar held a joint censorship in 73. This denarius from a rare issue struck earlier that year is one of the first coins to advertise it on the obverse. The SPQR within wreath type, also shared with Vespasian, is extremely scarce for Titus Caesar and rarely encountered in trade. RIC cites only one specimen in the BM (the lone example cited in OCRE and RSC II), but oddly places the frequency rating as just 'rare'. Asearch results produced only the present coin. I believe the RIC rating woefully underrates the rarity of this variety for Titus Caesar. Double die match with the BM specimen.David Atherton01/17/24 at 20:30Dirk J: Congrats on the rare acquisition.

RIC 1017 VespasianÆ Quadrans, 2.17g
Rome Mint, 77-78 AD
Obv: IMP VESP AVG COS VIII; Caduceus, winged, between crossed cornuacopiae
Rev: S C in laurel wreath
RIC 1017 (C). BMC 741. BNC 911.
Acquired from London Ancient Coins, November 2023.
The quadrans in the early imperial period typically lacked an imperial portrait. Possibly the denomination was deemed so lowly by mint officials that a portrait was considered improper. They were struck haphazardly and functioned primarily as an urban low value coinage in Rome and central Italy. The quadrans was the typical fee for entry into the baths, a urinal, or for a tryst in a cheap brothel. Being of rather low value quadrantes were not typically hoarded and thus are relatively scarce today. This crossed cornuacopiae/S C in wreath type was struck for the quadrans in just two issues dated to 76 and 77-78. The obverse copies a similar reverse type struck for the 'eastern flavoured' dupondii in 74.David Atherton01/17/24 at 14:51Jay GT4: The everyday coin

Ceylon KahavanuCeylon Kahavanu
Anonymous gold Kahavanu
Type III-B
20 mm, 4.28 g
Period of Chola invasion (970-1070 AD)
Obverse: The depiction showcases a standing king facing right, adorned with a pointed crown. The king holds a lotus in his right hand and points at the Shrivatsa symbol with his left hand. A degenerate coconut palm tree is situated on the far left. The king is attired in a wavy Dhoti, characterized by two curved lines on either side and one line in between the legs, resembling tentacles and earning the moniker 'octopus man.' The king stands on a lotus plant stalk with a small circle in the center, concluding on the left in a conch shell and featuring a lotus bud on the right. Five pellets to the right, their significance remains mystery.
Reverse: Seated king facing right, with his left hand resting on his left leg and his right hand holding a conch shell. His right leg rests on a couch or bed-like throne known as asana. On the right side of the field, a Devanagari legend is inscribed in three lines, reading Sri Lan Ka Vi Ha. In these coins, Viha denotes the value, equivalent to 20 Silver Massas.
Note: Despite common attributions identifying it as Sri Lan Ka Vi Bhu, a closer examination reveals the last letter to be Ha. This distinction becomes apparent when comparing the final letter with early Type-I issues or coins from SaHAsamalla or ParakramaBAHU. Additionally, in these anonymous gold coins, there is an absence of Bha that could combine to form the letter Bhu. Following the letter Vi, only Ha is present. RIC 0519 Titus as Caesar [Vespasian]AR Denarius, 3.14g
Double die match with the BM specimen.David Atherton01/15/24 at 12:33paul1888: Great reverse

[Together with the veiled Libertas type, likely struck in early 42 BC just after the conference with his co-conspirator and assassin, M. Junius Brutus, at Smyrna. These issues bear the essentially self-declared title of Imperator, as the tyrannicides had no official State status, other than that of assassin co-conspirators. At the first battle of Philippi in October 42 BC Cassius’ forces suffered a temporary rout by Antony’s forces upon which Cassius committed suicide mistakenly thinking Brutus had also suffered defeat.]Ken W201/12/24 at 03:11Jay GT4: Great historic coin

This very tiny coin is similar to Hamburger #119
Atiqot English Series, Vol.1, 1954. “Minute Coins
from Caesarea Maritima”. Dr. Hamburger published
six coins with similar motifs. These coins bear either
a male or female head on the obverse, and anywhere
from 2-4 heads or busts, often crudely rendered,
on the reverse. He was unable to assign a date or
a place of minting based on the style of the designs,
and these coins remain a mystery.v-drome01/11/24 at 04:09Jay GT4: Mysterious coins

RIC 288 Domitian as Caesar [Titus]Æ Sestertius, 25.48g
Rome mint, 80-81 AD
Obv: CAES DIVI AVG VESP F DOMITIANVS COS VII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: PAX AVGVST; S C in field; Pax stg. l., with branch and cornucopiae
RIC 288 (R). BMC 230. BNC 236.
Ex Harlan J Berk BBS 225, 30 November 2023, lot 137. Ex Curtis Clay Collection. Acquired from B A Seaby, mid-1960s, with handwritten ticket by David Sear.
A reverse type struck for both Titus and Domitian Caesar symbolising the bountiful prosperity Pax and the emperor have provided. DIVI AVG VESP F tells us the coin was struck after Vespasian's deification. The date of Vespasian's consecratio is dated by the epigraphic evidence sometime between 8 September 79 and 29 May 80. Nathan T. Elkins has proposed that the opening games of the Colosseum were in honour of Vespasian's deification. If so, this sestertius could not have been struck much earlier than June 80. Engraved with a severe Titus-like portrait.David Atherton01/10/24 at 04:06Jay GT4: I do like the portrait, Excellent coin

Domitian Caesar on horse prancing left, raising right hand and holding scepter in left.

RIC 1029 (R3)
HJB 225th Bid or Buy lot 63 from the Curtis L. Clay Collection; ex CNG E329, 25 June 2014, 409.
The reverse depicts Domitian participating in the Judaea Capta triumph of 71 A.D. He is, as Josephus described him, riding alongside in magnificent apparel and mounted on a horse that was itself a site worth seeing.
RIC notes that this is "presumably a mule, with the reverse of Domitian from the parallel issue." David Atherton believes the reverse die is intentional for both Titus and Domitian, making this an official pairing of dies for Titus. Regardless, the type is very rare. None in Forum galleries.Jay GT401/10/24 at 01:27Nemonater: Wonderful!
