vespasian modius.JPG
RIC 0981 VespasianAR Denarius, 3.40g
Rome Mint, 77-78 AD
Obv: CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, l.
Rev: IMP XIX; Modius, standing on three legs, containing five ears of corn upright and two hanging over at the sides
RIC 981 (C2). BMC 218. RSC 215. BNC 192.
Acquired from Old Roman Coins, March 2004.

A reverse which promotes Vespasian's new agricultural programme. A modius was the standard measure of grain in the Roman world. Normally the left facing portrait is rarer, which were struck at a ratio of 1:10 to the right facing types. However, in this one case the left facing are much more common.

A wonderful portrait matched with a highly detailed reverse. A slightly ragged flan is only a minor detraction.

This issue reminds on the triumph of Germanicus AD 17 due to his campaigns against the Germans, where he regains 2 of the 3 signs which were lost AD 9 by Varus in the battle of Teutoburger Wald.

For Latin scholars: The grammar structure on the rev. is the infamous 'ablativus absolutus' in connection with a chiasmus!

There are two interesting things about these coins. Firstly, the flans were cast in double-sided moulds, giving a rather odd appearance. Secondly, the Hebrew inscription is retrograde. Meshorer says that signatures were sometimes reversed in the ancient world, and thus the inscription may have this character.

Pupienus portrait - RIC 10(a).jpg
Roman, Pupienus, April - June 238 A.D.MARCVS CLODIVS PUPIENVS MAXIMVS was born about 164. He was a Senator in 238 when the revolt of the Gordians broke out against Maximinus I, and he was one of the Senate's "Committee of Twenty" to oversee the defense of Italy in support of the Gordians. When the Gordians were quickly killed in Africa, the Senate made Pupienus and a Senator named Balbinus co-Augusti. Pupienus was to lead the army and Balbinus was to administrate. Maximinus was soon killed by his own men at Aquileia but discontent in Rome led to the murder of Pupienus by the Praetorian Guard on July 29, 238. Septimius Severus Color ImpressionA quick colorized marble statue. Hair might be too brown for reality, I believe in older age it was peppered with grey like the famous family painting (the one with Geta scrubbed out), but he looked younger here so artistic license was used. Also, he should really be darker skinned but working on the white surface of the original pic made what I was doing seem dark ennough, in retrospect he should probably be a little more dark toned.12 commentsScotvs Capitis05/09/07 at 22:59awl: lol Smile

RIC I, 38; C.57; von Kaenel 628 (this specimen!)

One of my favorite coins due to its pedigree:
ex Glandining & Co. Sale Nr. 2, London, 15.7.1029, Nr.666 (depicted)
(ex coll. Moritz Simon, Berlin)
ex Cahn, Auktion 68, Frankfurt, 26.11.1930, Nr. 232 (depicted)
ex M&M, Basel
ex Dr. Brandt, Klassische Münzen, Tübingen, February 2002

from Curtis Clay: Herbert Cahn, one of the greatest
German coin houses, had to flee from the Nazis to Switzerland

1 NEMESIS, Goddess of rightful distribution
2 CADUCEUS, holding caduceus to snake = welfare
3 The interpretation of N.'s gesture, holding fold of the robe to the chin as spitting in the neck and symbol for happiness, is doubtful. Rossbach thinks it may be a gesture of modesty!
This all stands for the politics of Claudius!

RIC 131 TitusAR Denarius, 3.40g
Rome Mint, 80 AD
Obv: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P; Tripod with fillets; above, ravens, l. and r., and dolphin over wreath
RIC 131 (R). BMC 82. RSC 323a. BNC 66.
Acquired from Beast Coins, April 2007.

This denarius was part of a series struck for the lectisternium (religious ceremony) celebrating the opening of the Colosseum in 80 AD.

Each god had its own sacred couch, in latin they are known as 'pulvinaria', brought out in pairs, probably in the Forum. The coins in question commemorates the sacred couches which were set out with 'exuviae' (emblems) representing the gods. This example is most likely the 'pulvinar' of Apollo.

There are two different types of the Tripod reverse: The common one with just a dolphin above the Tripod, another with a wreath and ravens added. The Reka Devina hoard records 24 specimens of the more common type and only 3 of the raven/wreath variant. Cohen and the RIC do not have seperate listings for the scarce variant, the BMCRE and RSC do record it however.

Needless to say it took a bit longer for me to acquire this less common specimen, but it was worth the wait. Wonderfully centered with gunmetal toning.

Attributed by Adrian Marsden to Treveri (Trier) with the likely mintmark of either TR•S or TRS• (same workshop as first coin shown here). This brockage resulted from a coin getting stuck in the active die and it's obverse surface accidently being used as a die in itself.
